With Fast & Furious 7 effortlessly hurtling past the magic billion-dollar box-office mark, director James Wan is, shall we say, these days rather in demand. His name has already been mentioned in connection with Warner/DC's Aquaman, but his latest suitors are Sony, who are courting him to man the cameras for Robotech. The project is based on the 1980s Japanese anime, bought by Harmony Gold USA and Japan’s Tatsunoko Productions, which re-edited and redubbed three different series to make into a daily syndicated ‘toon for audiences in the Us and elsewhere. In the series, mankind builds machines using technology developed from a crashed alien spaceship to fend off three different alien invasions, including one race of huge warriors none too happy about us pinching their tech and power source.Sony picked up the Robotech rights when Warner Bros. dropped them last month. Sony Pictures is said to be aggressively pursuing filmmaker James Wan ("Furious 7," "Insidious") for a live-action feature adaptation of the "Robotech" franchise.

Negotiations are underway with Wan following Sony's acquisition of the property a month ago. Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton are slated to produce while Michael Gordon ("300," "G.I. Joe") will pen the script.

As the Robotech film moves ahead, we look at the anime's history, knotty rights issues, cultural impact, and earlier failed film attempts.
"In the year 1999, high above Macross island in the South Pacific, a phenomenal event occurred in the skies which altered the cause of human history..."
With a blaze of animated light, a huge alien space craft bursts through Earth's atmosphere and collides with a city, reducing its buildings to atoms in an instant.
That dramatic opening heralded the arrival of Robotech - and American television had never seen anything quite like it. Here was animated show which told a sprawling saga set across multiple epochs, full of alien invaders and exotic transforming robots. Its characters seemed low-key and somehow real; there were brave pilots, nervy new-recruits, romances and love triangles. There was action, but also comedy, tragedy and pathos. It even provided a generous helping of bubblegum pop music.

Sony Pictures has secured the live-action film rights to the popular anime series "Robotech" which they plan to turn into a potential franchise.
The original 1985 show was actually a combination of three different Japanese television shows - footage from "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross," "Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross," and "Genesis Climber Mospeada" was cobbled together and redubbed to create an original 85-episode animated series that could be syndicated across U.S. markets.
As a result, a lot of rewriting and editing had to be done to stitch together three unrelated series to portray it as one cohesive storyline that spans three generations. To this day, the first season (based on the 'Macross' series) remains the most well-regarded.
Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton ("300," "Immortals") are producing and Michael Gordon ("300," "GI Joe") is writing the script. Various people have tried to adapt the series into a film over the past decade including Tobey Maguire,...

Robotech fans: it's finally happening! It looks like the Robotech movie will come alive, this time with The 300 and The 300: Rise of an Empire army behind it. Hollywood Gang producers Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton, best known for the CG/live action franchise that made togas popular again, will be producing with G.I. Andy Muschietti, the Spaniard who directed Mama and is the current listed director for Shadow of the Colossus will helm the project. Deadline Hollywood broke the news that the much-stalled Warner Bros. project has finally been greenlighted with a working crew that means business. Robotech fans have been sitting on the edge of their seats since 2007 when it was announced that Tobey Macguire's production company had acquired rights to the property. Get ready for another big screen adaptation of an 80s children's favorite. The Hollywood Gang, a Warner Bros-based production house, is moving full steam ahead on a film based on Robotech. The cartoon favorite is credited as being the start of the anime craze here in the states when it introduced kids to the exciting visual style and open-ended storytelling that is synonymous with the genre.
This isn't Robotech's first dance with Hollywood. The on-again/off-again relationship between the property and Tinseltown began back in 2007. The project has seen many suiters for roles behind and in front of the cameras- names like Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire have been linked to it. At one point, a director had even been tapped to shepherd the production. His name was Nic Mathieu and he was primarily known for directing commercials. But that fell apart, which brings us to today's news from Deadline.

I've never seen an episode of the 1980s anime series Robotech, but a live-action film version has been kicking around Hollywood for years. Last we heard, Leonardo DiCaprio was interested in the movie, but that version fell apart a couple of years back. Now Deadline reports that the movie is back in development again, with Mama director Andy Muschietti being eyed by producers Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra scribe Michael Gordon is writing the screenplay, which presumably will use the same basic plot as previous versions:
Robotech takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off an alien invasion, with the fate of the human race ending up in the hands of two young pilots.

A live-action Robotech adaptation has actually been in and out of development at Warner Bros. since 2007, and has seen a host of writers and producers come and go. Now, Deadline report that the latest group to take a crack at bringing it to the screen are Warner Bros-based Hollywood Gang producers Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton, who have hired G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra scribe Michael Gordon to write the script, and are apparently looking at Andy Muschietti (Mama, Shadow of the Colossus) to direct. Robotech is a much loved, incredibly influential property which started out as an 85-episode science fiction anime TV series back in 1985, and has since spawned numerous spin-offs, books, comics, toys -- you name it. If you want an idea of the premise, go watch Pacific Rim! But in case you don't want to put yourself through that again, just think giant robots Vs.

“I’m Spartacus”… no “I’m Spartacus”… no ‘I’m Spartacus”….
There can only really be one Spartacus and for us it’s Stanley Kubrick’s epic 1960 film that starred Kirk Douglas in his defining role, alongside giants Jean Simmons, Charles Laughton, Peter Ustinov, Tony Curtis and Laurence Olivier. We reviewed the newly restored and particularly gorgeous Blu-ray earlier this year and our very own Rob Beames called it ‘the very best of it’s kind’ – i.e. not just the best movie version of Spartacus but one of the best in the swords and sandal genre period.
But despite how powerful and beautiful Kubrick’s film really is, modern Hollywood producers think they can eclipse it’s quality. Or perhaps more truthfully… think they can make money from the recognisable brand. In 2004, the USA Network produced a made-for-t.V. Now, producer Graham King and his Gk Films are developing a new feature about Spartacus, the rebel leader who took on the Roman Empire reports Variety.
"300" writer Michael B. Gordon came up with the script pitch which is described as a more historically accurate take than the previous adaptations.
In this version Spartacus is a revolutionary who leads a band of 30,000 gladiators and 40,000 freed slaves in revolt against the Roman war machine between 73 and 71 BC, a rebellion defeated by commander Marcus Licinius Crassus.

With the recent influx of interest in the tale of Spartacus thanks to both the Stanley Kubrick classic and its recently released Blu-ray, as well as the Starz TV series, Graham King and his Gk Films banner is looking to capitalize on this on the big screen.
Variety is reporting that King is currently in the works on a new film based on Spartacus, a leader of rebels who tried to take on the entire Roman Empire.
The film will be penned by 300 scribe Michael B. Gordon, and is still on the hunt for a director. This particularly film will have no connection to the brilliant Kubrick film and Criterion Collection member nor the Starz series, and will allegedly follow a more historically accurate approach to this man’s life. It will follow Spartacus “leading a band of 70,000 elite gladiators and 50,000 freed slaves in revolt against the Roman war machine between 73 and 71 BC.

Producer Graham King (The Departed, Gangs of New York) and his Gk Films banner are currently in the process of developing a new historically epic feature film based on Spartacus, the rebel leader who took on the Roman Empire for two years.
This film will in no way follow the story lines from Stanely Kubrik's 1960 film, or the Starz series, both of which are fictionalized stories. This new film will be developed around more of the historical facts surrounding the historical figure. The story will focus on "him leading a band of 70,000 elite gladiators and 50,000 freed slaves in revolt against the Roman war machine between 73 and 71 BC. Move aside "Spartacus: Blood and Sand", it's time for a real Spartacus movie. Graham King's Gk Films has announced via Twitter/Variety that they're developing a new feature film called Spartacus, that will focus "on the rebel leader who took on the Roman Empire for 2 years." It will throw out all the other fictional storylines (*ahem* Starz) and "rely instead on more historic facts of Spartacus as a revolutionary." The project is actually on a pitch they acquired from 300 co-writer Michael B. Gordon (also credited for the G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra story). However, no director is attached and the project is developing in the early stages. It sounds like they're hoping for this to be quite epic, as their final tweet about the project states that the film focuses "on [Spartacus] leading a band of 70000 elite gladiators and 50000 freed slaves in revolt against the Roman war machine ...

Voltage Pictures and Wildwood Enterprises have cast Shia Labeouf and Robert Redford in the political action thriller, The Company You Keep with Redford set to direct from a script by Lem Dobbs (Haywire, The Limey, Dark City), based on the novel by Neil Gordon. The film chronicles the story of a former Weather Underground militant wanted by the FBI for 30 years, who must go on the run when his true identity is exposed by a young, ambitious reporter hell-bent on making a name for himself. Redford plays the former radical at the center of this nationwide manhunt and Labeouf, the determined journalist doggedly chasing him and his story. The picture is currently in pre-production and is set to film in Vancouver in September.

300 and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra writer Michael B. Gordon received the green light today from producer Graham King for his pitch of a historically accurate take on the famous Roman slave-turned-revolutionary Spartacus. Variety reported that King via his Gk Films label acquired Gordon’s script about Spartacus’ revolt against Rome between 73 and 71 BC via an army of 70,000 gladiators and 50,000 freed slaves. King promised a radically different Spartacus tale from Stanley Kubrick’s 1960 film starring Kirk Douglas and Laurence Olivier as well as the recent Starz series Spartacus: Blood and Sand.

Gk Films has plans to bring Spartacus back to the big screen in a film version designed to play up the historical aspects of the figure, Variety reports. Their take is based on a pitch by Michael B. Gordon, the writer of 300 . "Gk is developing 'Spartacus' as a film," the studio wrote on their Twitter feed, "focusing on the rebel leader who took on the Roman Empire for 2 years. 'Spartacus' will eschew the fictionalized storylines, and rely instead on more historic facts of Spartacus as a revolutionary. Focusing on him leading a band of 70000 elite gladiators and 50000 freed slaves in revolt against the Roman war machine between 73 and 71 BC." Most famously adapted by Stanley Kubrick in 1960, Spartacus has also been the subject of a recent Starz...

"300" writer Michael Gordon has sold a spooky surveillance project to NBC.
The network has picked up "Echelon" from Gordon and Imagine Entertainment and 20th Century Fox TV.
The idea was spawned by the controversial U.S electronic eavesdropping apparatus Echelon, a program that supposedly captures virtually all data signals for analysis at a central hub in West Virginia.
These millions of video, audio and data files are then disseminated to various federal and local law enforcement agencies for further investigation.
Now here's the twist from the show's logline: "There is, however, less than one% of the data that nobody wants to touch. These are the classified video files that seem to have captured the unexplainable."
The show will center on a fictional team called G.H.O.S.T. (Global Hierarchical Observation Strategy Taskforce) whose assignment it is to investigate this paranormal data.
Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo will executive producers on the project,...
