Amie Donald is the young actress behind the killer doll M3GAN in the 2023 horror film M3GAN. Though animatronics and CGI played a major role in making the character appear like a real doll, Donald takes credit for bringing the titular role to life and turning it into a fan favorite. However, Donald’s role was to move M3GAN’s body but she didn’t voice the role. Relatively new in the movie industry, Amie Donald is a New Zealand actress and dancer with unbelievable skills up her sleeves. The young entertainer applied her dancing skills when M3GAN took to the dance floor...

As we close the book on 2023 and take stock of the best that this year delivered in movies and TV, let's not forget the bad guys. Villains are paradoxical characters; we love them precisely for how bad they can be, and if a story invests you in its villain, you can be cheering in equal measure as they rise and then as they fall. And then, of course, there's the sons of b*tches you just really want to see go down.
"Best villains" sounds similarly oxymoronic. So, why are these villains the ones who deserve the highlight? These are the bad guys who are not just wholly formed and compelling in their own right, but who further the themes of the story surrounding them and best challenge both the hero's goals and the writer's point(s). Stories are a reflection of the world in which they are told, so...

Blumhouse and Universal's "Five Nights at Freddy's" movie is looking more and more like it has the makings of being the reason for the Halloween season, and a big part of the allure is seeing the larger-than-life animatronics of Foxy, Bonnie, Chica, and Freddy Fazbear in live-action. The fearsome foursome of Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria (home to child murder and possessed robot animals) represents the introduction to horror for a new generation, so it was important that no shortcuts were taken in bringing them all to life. Fortunately, the creative team behind "FNaF" went above and beyond by enlisting the services of the legendary Jim Henson's Creature Shop. With the help of some of the very best in the biz, all of the animatronics look character-correct ... and downright terrifying.

The MTV Movie & TV Awards faced a series of roadblocks this year due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike. While the awards show was set to broadcast live on Sunday, it was announced that due to the strike, the network would air a pre-taped special as several attendees announced they were pulling out of the show.
“As we carefully navigate how best to deliver the fan first awards’ show we envisioned that our team has worked so hard to create, we’re pivoting away from a live event that still enables us to produce a memorable night full of exclusive sneak peaks, irreverent categories our audience has come to expect, and countless moments that will both surprise and delight as we honor the best of film and TV over the past year,” said Bruce Gillmer, president of music, music talent, programming and events at Paramount Global, and an...

Netflix has officially confirmed the upcoming third season of Sweet Tooth will be the show’s final season. Season two launched on April 27, 2023 and season three could arrive as soon as 2024, given that it’s already finished filming and won’t be impacted by the writers’ strike.
“Season 3 is an Arctic story with exciting new adventures and what we hope will be a satisfying conclusion to this epic tale. Gus is going to see a side of the world and humanity that he didn’t see in Season 1 or 2,” revealed series creator, writer, director, and showrunner Jim Mickle.
The renewal announcement included details on new season three regulars. Rosalind Chao, who plays Zhang, and Amy Seimetz, who plays Birdie, have been upped to series regulars. Cara Gee (The Expanse) is joining the series as Siana, and newcomer Ayazhan Dalabayeva will play Nuka in the final season.

The stars of Universal’s unofficial new-era monsterverse are facing off for Best Villain at the MTV Movie & TV Awards on May 7, giving this generation the next best thing to its very own “Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man.”
“M3GAN” came out in January and became 2023’s first bona fide success. The campy sci-fi slasher about a bereaved young girl’s high-tech doll becoming a killer robot scored $177 million against a $12-million budget. Universal followed the sleeper hit with February’s “Cocaine Bear,” in which a zany cast of characters must survive a 500-pound black bear that’s ingested a missing stash of narcotics. It earned the studio an additional $87 million but fell short of expectations. What will Cokey’s response to M3G’s upstaging of her be?

Among the most entertaining categories at the MTV Movie and TV Awards every year is Best Villain, but for a category intended to be all in good fun, its history has included some pretty iconic characters, from Denzel Washington‘s Oscar-winning Detective Alonzo Harris in “Training Day,” to Heath Ledger‘s Oscar-winning Joker in “The Dark Knight,” to Tom Hiddleston‘s star-making Loki in “The Avengers.” Who will join their ranks this year?
Well, judging from the combined predictions of Gold Derby users as of this writing, we can expect the title character from the campy horror film “M3GAN” to prevail. Voiced by Jenna Davis and embodied by Amie Donald, M3GAN is an artificially intelligent doll who becomes hostile. She’s backed by 12 of our Top 24 Users and a whopping 17 of our All-Star Top 24. When released at the cinema earlier this year, M3gan was certainly promoted perfectly. The M3gan ‘dance’ featured in the trailer became a bit of a viral hit, and alongside mainly positive reviews, helped the movie make over $175 million at the box office – a huge profit. Now releasing on digital and Blu-ray is a new unrated version.
The story is pretty basic but that’s all it needs to be. A toy company builds a life-like doll that is sold to be a child’s friend as much as it is their toy. But before it is even officially released on the market, the Beta version of the doll is used by the designer’s niece and it soon starts to take on a life of its own.

Exclusive: New Zealand has long been known as a prime destination for big budget films such as Avatar and The Lord of the Rings thanks to its enviable locations, skilled crew base and generous 40% tax rebate. But, earlier this year when Avatar: The Way of Water was on its way to breaking multiple box office records as it climbed to its $2.3Bn tally, there was another New Zealand-shot project that was making a dent in the global box office chart. Universal, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster’s killer doll hit M3GAN amassed an impressive $176M worldwide from just a $12M budget after its January release.
While the film was set in Seattle, it was, in fact, shot in Auckland in 2021 after the pandemic forced the project to pivot from a Montreal shoot to New Zealand’s relatively Covid-free shores.. The nation is home to director Gerard Johnstone and it would be where the project would ultimately would find its 12-year-old star, Amie Donald, who plays M3gan.
“The fact we were able to find her in the moment that we needed to cast someone to play that role is, I mean, I don’t even know what the odds are, but they are very long,” says producer Judson Scott. “And to be able to find someone that is as capable as she is to do what we need to do but then also be as good of an onscreen presence that she is, is something you can’t really teach. You know, you just point the camera at her and the physicality and her presence is there. It’s an X factor – she has it. We’re just incredibly lucky and fortunate enough to have found that person in the city we were filming in.”
Donald, an Auckland native and national dance champion (whose skills came in handy for the doll’s viral dancing), brought M3GAN to life with the help of VFX, puppetry and animatronics. “She reminds me of old movie stars,” says Scott. “She can dance, she can perform all of these incredible stunts. Our stunt coordinator and movement coach was like, ‘This is incredible – we’re seeing something a lot of these people haven’t seen before.’”
The low-budget production, says Scott, was able to benefit from a crew that had worked on some of the biggest films and television shows to come out of the region.
“When we started this film, we were working with a lot of individuals who had done productions that are much bigger than ours on a much grander scale in terms of budget and what’s required of them to do,” he says. “We were incredibly lucky to be making what you would consider a smaller movie at the studio level with people that have won Academy Awards for working on Avatar, working The Lord of the Rings, working on Cowboy Bebop, working on the Rings TV show. So, we’ve been able to have access to those people to work on our smaller movie. We’ve been incredibly lucky that they brought all that knowledge to it.”
Producer Adam Hendricks says Auckland reminded him “in a lot of ways” of Los Angeles. “It’s sprawling, which is nice and also you get a bunch of different looks.”
He adds, “One of the things that I loved about the experience [in New Zealand] is it’s a very holistic idea of working on a film set. In the U.S. and in other places, every one of their different departments feels like they’re part of their different little fiefdoms – they seldom interact, let alone pick each other’s equipment up. But here, when the dolly trucks get moved, everyone comes and helps and when something needs to get done, everyone comes to the aid of the person that needs it and pushes it along. It’s very collaborative.”
Reflecting on the experience, Screen Auckland manager Matthew Horrocks, says the group is “incredibly proud of the role the Auckland screen sector played” in the film.
“M3GAN was shot in Auckland, making the most of our city’s forests, suburbs and city-centre locations, using Auckland studios and Auckland crews. There is even a star in the making in Amie Donald, who plays the M3GAN doll. The film is also a remarkable achievement for our own director Gerard Johnstone.
“From twice wining the 48 Hour Filmmaking competition, through writing credits on Housebound and The Jaquie Brown Diaries to working as a director on The New Legend of Monkey, Gerard has long been recognised as one of our finest talents. M3GAN is a new milestone in what is shaping up to be a stellar international career.”...

You would have to be living under a rock to have not heard of M3GAN (check out our review Here). The killer doll has absolutely taken the world by storm and provided a horror villain for Generation Z. I can’t count myself amongst the fans of the film, but I understand why everyone seems so smitten over it. I was lucky enough to sit down with director Gerard Johnstone (who made the criminally underrated Housebound) as well as star Violet McGraw to pick their brains about the killer doll. We discuss Megan 2.0 as well as a certain parting gift that the filmmakers gave Megan herself, Amie Donald. Check out the interview above!
One of the interesting things about talking to Johnstone was the fact that you can get a real sense that he knows and appreciates what a bonafide cult phenomenon the character of M3GAN has become. While...

Every bit as outrageously entertaining as horror fans would expect from Housebound director Gerard Johnstone, Malignant writer Akela Cooper, and producers James Wan and Jason Blum, M3GAN danced into theaters the first week of January.
With a persuasive marketing campaign led by a buzzy trailer and a strong social media presence, the film performed beyond expectations, grossing $173.4 million worldwide on a $12 million budget. A sequel, M3GAN 2.0, was swiftly put into development for a January 2025 release.
Until then, viewers can now enjoy both the theatrical and unrated cuts of M3GAN on Blu-ray. The release also carries three making-of featurettes: “New Vision of Horror,” “Bringing Life to M3GAN,” and “Getting Hacked.” Despite running a scant 14 minutes in total, they pack in soundbites from a wide array of cast and crew members.

One of the surprise breakout hits of the year was the fun horror flick M3GAN, which puts a modern twist on a Child’s Play-esque concept with the doll having AI. Promotion of the movie went viral thanks in part to an eerie sequence of the M3GAN doll doing a TikTok dance down a hallway in an intimidating fashion. Not only did the movie score as a big hit for a modest-budgeted studio film, collecting $173.5 million at the box office, but there is now a sequel in development from the film’s director, Gerard Johnstone, that will be titled M3GAN 2.0.
Johnstone was gracious enough to sit with us for an interview, which will be dropping soon. However, here are some good tidbits he’s revealed to us to whet your appetite until then.
As M3GAN inevitably draws comparisons to Child’s Play, it was asked if there would be a M3GAN vs.

Welcome back again to our ongoing Blu-ray release column! As always, I've gathered up some of the best new Blu-ray releases for you in one handy place. Here you'll learn if something is worth actually picking up on physical media — or if you can just skip a title and wait for it to show up on streaming. But I can't stress enough how important physical media is, folks! Streaming titles vanish — physical media is forever. Unless your house burns down or something like that, in which case you've got other, bigger problems to deal with.

Say hello to M3GAN, the lifelike companion that levels up the horrors of “Chucky” and “Annabelle” through the anxieties of AI.
“M3GAN” follows roboticist Gemma (Allison Williams) who gifts a life-size AI doll to her 8-year-old niece, Cady (Violet McGraw) after a tragedy suddenly puts Cady’s guardianship in Gemma’s hands. Though Cady and M3GAN hit it off as best friends, Gemma begins to worry if she has created something — or someone — too powerful to be stopped.
The highly anticipated flick also made a splash with a mesmerizing viral dance sequence — which was given an encore performance with eight M3GANs during its December premiere.

"M3GAN" was a perfectly fun, spooky film, but many viewers couldn't help but feel like it was held back a little by its PG-13 rating. Sure, that stretched-out ear scene was pretty gnarly, but the worst of the violence was kept implied, and that's a little disappointing to the more blood-thirsty members of the audience.
Luckily, there's an unrated version of the film releasing exclusively on Peacock on February 24, and it'll be available on Blu-Ray and DVD on March 21.The unrated version promises to give us "more distressing violence and profanity," as well as include "never-before-seen bonus content."
Some of the exclusive bonus features include "A New Vision of Horror," in which the cast and crew talk about the film's production and creation, including how the "initial idea" for an evil robot doll was come up with. The sci-fi thriller M3GAN (read our review Here) was originally going to receive an R rating, until the filmmakers decided they should do some reshoots to achieve a PG-13 rating. Lately, it seems like an eerily beautiful life-sized doll has been popping up everywhere. On social media and late-night TV, M3GAN has been doing her unmistakable dance, and she’s both fascinating and creepy at the same time. The horror movie about the glassy-eyed android with artificial intelligence is already a big success. Its producers hope audiences will enjoy it–but also think about the lessons the story has regarding artificial intelligence (AI).

Blumhouse may have the next big slasher franchise on their hands. Who's the star? M3GAN, the killer fembot with the dance moves of a teenage TikToker. The film's been both a critical favorite and a box-office hit, and a sequel is being fast-tracked.
M3GAN, portrayed physically in some scenes by young actress Amie Donald and voiced by Jenna Davis, is a robotic doll designed to take interactive toys to a new level. She winds up being a little too good at her primary functions, developing sentience while taking her assignment of protecting Cady (Violet McGraw) to homicidal levels. "M3GAN" ended with some clear sequel bait. After M3GAN's body is destroyed, an Alexa-like smart home device owned by M3GAN's creator Gemma (Allison Williams) stares right into the camera, heavily hinting that M3GAN's mind lives on. So where does the story go from here?...

You really can’t go wrong with a killer robot movie, and this one delivers all the requisite robo-thrills. Produced by Blumhouse (another good sign), it’s directed by Gerard Johnstone (Housebound) and features Get Out star Allison Williams in the lead.
The film opens with a snowy car crash, in which 12 year old Cady (Violet McGraw) tragically loses both her parents. She’s sent to live with her tech genius single aunt Gemma (Williams), who’s just putting the finishing touches to her ambitious robo-project, code-named M3GAN (for Model 3 Generative ANdroid). Since M3GAN is designed to be a high-tech toy for children, she needs to be paired with a host in order to learn properly, so Gemma ropes in Cady...

Who needs parents when you’ve got an increasingly sentient android who can cater to your every need? It’s not a question often asked, but it’s one M3GAN flippantly answers. Indeed, Blumhouse Productions’ latest satirical horror sees Chucky reborn, thanks to a toy whose sweetness is slowly subverted into something more sinister.
The Dr Frankenstein to M3GAN’s AI monster is Gemma, a gifted engineer who wants to redefine what a toy can provide for children. In what is effectively the lead role, Allison Williams holds the film together brilliantly, carrying the right amount of hubris while clearly caught on uncommon ground when forced to care for her niece, Cady (Violet McGraw). It’s no real spoiler to say that Cady is thrust into Gemma’s care due to a tragic incident, and her coping mechanism for this grief increasingly becomes the android she is effectively gifted with.

This piece contains slight spoilers for "M3GAN."
Sure, we have already sung the praises of how "M3GAN" expertly uses "Titanium" as a bizarre needle-drop, but why let that song have all the fun? There were, of course, a few other key moments where M3GAN shows off her singing chops in bizarre attempts to make Cady (Violet McGraw) feel better. In fact, the first instance of her singing comes during a pivotal scene where the soon-to-be killer doll sings a prototypically inspirational song filled with buzzwords to Funki board members.
As expected, this was not just a funny coincidence. In an interview with Variety, "M3GAN" director Gerard Johnstone revealed that the purpose of the song, officially titled "Tell Me Your Dreams," was meant to poke fun at slap-dashed children's entertainment seemingly made by algorithms. He walked the trade through its inception, detailing how he approached composer Anthony Willis with a bold combination of ideas.

This article contains major spoilers for "M3GAN."
After months of some genius viral marketing, "M3GAN" has proven to be yet another successful venture for Blumhouse. The caregiver AI turned sassy murderer is carving a name for herself in a world where Chucky currently holds the heavyweight title of cinema's memorable killer doll, and it's easy to see why. The acrobatic physicality of Amie Donald, coupled with the vocal performance of Jenna Davis, has proved to be a potent mix that brings cinema's newest slasher baddie to the screen with entertaining results. Not giving M3GAN her own franchise would be such a wasted opportunity. But given how the film ends, a sequel is all but inevitable.
Even though the film was whittled down from a considerably more violent screenplay, some of which was shot, "M3GAN" still manages to end things on a high note. After finally seeing the destructive impact of her emotional support doll,...

Dolls have earned their reputation as harbingers of evil for quite some time now ... there's just something very ominous about them. Dolls have also further established their creepy status thanks to the horror genre: Chucky is creepy, Annabelle is creepy, and M3GAN, the newest addition to the creepy dolls collective, is also creepy. And that's even before you find out they've been possessed or something's wrong with them.
In New Zealand filmmaker Gerard Johnstone's "M3GAN," the titular doll is a marvel of artificial intelligence to the people who made her and a dangerous companion to those she has been made for. In the horror movie, the high-tech AI doll develops self-awareness and becomes hostile to those who interfere with her relationship with her human companion. The doll has a homicidal streak, and Gerard Johnstone wanted to capture M3GAN in the spookiest manner possible. She needed to appear life-like,...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for “M3GAN.”
“M3GAN had to be perfect. We couldn’t have one hair out of place,” director Gerard Johnstone says of the murderous AI doll at the heart of his latest film. “It was actually a horrifically difficult shoot. It was so hard.”
“I had a really great team around me, who were all having fun and reminding each other, ‘Hey, this movie is fun.’ That was a real joy,” he adds. After the challenging shoot, Johnstone himself finally remembered the humor: “It was amazing when the first edit came in to be reminded, ‘Oh, this film was actually quite charming and fun.’”
Now that the film has scored a killer 30 million opening weekend, it seems all the hard work was worth it. In an interview with Variety, Johnstone breaks down the film’s original ending that was scrapped, why he’s hoping for...

Can you imagine a world without the magic of the "M3GAN" dance? For TikTok users, horror fans, and queer people everywhere, the killer android doll's hallway dance has already become an indelible and endlessly entertaining part of the pop cultural zeitgeist. Even before audiences caught the movie on the big screen and witnessed M3GAN twirling and flailing to Skatt Bros' "Walk the Night" like a glitched-out ballerina, we knew and loved the dance after catching the movie's first trailer.
M3GAN's reputation preceded her, as the surprise box office hit earned strong buzz from folks who watched the dance again and again — even attempting to recreate it — back in October. Apparently, though, the man behind the movie initially didn't want audiences to see M3GAN bust a move before theatrical release.

This post contains spoilers for "M3GAN."
When Blumhouse and Universal Pictures first released the teaser poster for "M3GAN" shortly before CinemaCon, the immediate buzz was about the uncanny valley resemblance the A.I. powered robot doll had to both the robot baby version of Renesmee Cullen from the "Twilight" franchise, and to Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Little did anyone know that M3GAN would soon be the next horror icon.
Just before the winter holidays, the trailer for "M3GAN" dropped online and the landscape of horror changed forever. M3GAN had style, M3GAN had grace, M3GAN had a terrifying sprint on all fours, and M3GAN had some absolutely killer dance moves. The combination of M3GAN's otherworldly appearance and the unexpected fluidity of aerial flips in a hallway as a means of threatening a prospective victim was all anyone needed to completely give themselves over to begin worshipping at the altar of M3GAN.

Time and time again, horror has proven to be one of the most successful genres of them all, thanks in part to low budgets with big rewards. Case in point, look at "M3GAN," which raked in over 30 million in its opening weekend against a modest 12 million budget. If the killer AI wasn't one of Blumhouse's top priorities beforehand, it is now. How could she not be? Last October revealed the teaser that set the internet ablaze with the titular android dancing on the way to her next kill. "M3GAN" fever was in full effect.
On top of "Housebound" director Gerard Johnstone, the success of "M3GAN" can also be attributed to its screenwriter Akela Cooper. Her television work includes such shows like "Grimm," "Luke Cage," and "The 100," before making her feature film debut with the script for "Hell Fest." But everything changed once the bonkers ride that is "Malignant" came to the screen.

Not outwardly terrifying, director Gerard Johnstone’s sci-fi slasher features a lifelike AI doll named M3GAN, programmed to attach itself to a single child. In the case of Akela Cooper and James Wan’s story, M3GAN finds her child soulmate in Cady (Violet McGraw), a young girl recently orphaned by a fatal, parental car accident. The rest of the story plays out with absurdity, a film reliant on knowledge, tech, and habits recognized by 2023 audiences. M3GAN works due to our own reliance on and ability to trust technology we don’t understand, taken to logical ends by the film’s willingness to ham up this story, go for big laughs, and succeed in finding them more often than not.
Allison Williams plays Gemma, a toy designer and aunt to Cady, who gives her niece this untested model. Like most of the film’s other characters, she’s selfish, manipulative, happy...

Once you see M3GAN dancing, you can’t unsee it. While killer dolls have always been fertile ground for horror movie directors to explore, the creators of the new Blumhouse movie M3GAN knew they needed something special for their story of an AI robot going to lethal ends to protect young orphan girl Cady (Violet McGraw). By the time the first trailer dropped late last year, it was clear that they found that something. From Twitter to TikTok, movie fans were recreating a clip of M3GAN dancing before grabbing a paper cutter, presumably to do something murderous.
Although M3GAN boasts creative talent such as James Wan and Jason Blum producing — as well as Akela Cooper, the writer behind 2021’s gonzo horror masterpiece Malignant — the dancing bit came from director Gerard Johnstone. The idea occurred to the New Zealand-born director of the horror comedy favorite Housebound late at night.
