Quentin Tarantino's use of pre-recorded songs comes under the spotlight in Ivan's latest Music in Film...
“I don’t normally use original score. I don’t trust any composer to do it.”
That’s Quentin Tarantino in a nutshell: his love of music rivals his love of film. A new Tarantino album is now an event in itself, so it’s hard not to devote an entire column to the director with Django Unchained in cinemas.
Eclectic is the word most used to describe Tarantino’s soundtracks, which hop around his record collection like an excited teenager who just snuck into his parent’s bedroom. Django is no exception, but marks the largest amount of original music in any of his films to date.
Just how big a deal is that?
The director’s use of music has changed over the years. Back...

Where other filmmakers are content to fill their audiences ears with the latest garbage from Chris Brown, Quentin Tarantino mines the most obscure corners of the past to make his movies sound amazing. His new movie, Django Unchained continues this pattern with music from people like Brother Dege, Elisa Toffoli, Jim Croce, and Ennio Morricone (it is a spaghetti western after all). You don.t have to wait for Django.s Christmas day release to find out what Tarantino has in store for your ears. The entire Django Unchained soundtrack is now online and available to listen to for free. In fact, you can listen to the entire thing, right now, right here. Critics have written volumes about Quentin Tarantino.s gift for blazing dialogue, his skill at choosing actors, his penchant for wanton violence, but maybe what doesn.t get talked about enough is his knack for picking the...

We've spent the better (hotter?) portion of the summer reviving our fascination with the concept of the Ultimate Hotties of the Year -- in subcategories like Comedy, Action/Thriller, Crime-Fighting, Geek, and Vampires (apparently they're popular). In 2007, readers voted Angelina Jolie and Wentworth Miller as prom king and queen; this year, Robert Pattinson led your Top 25. And since favoritism can be limiting, here are the 25 hotties you can't believe we missed. Now that '09's long, strange trip is over, some EW staffers decided -- in the spirit of "why the heck not?" -- to create our own lists of Things That Are Hot. Slezak and Mandi followed the rules and chose broadly but from within the parameters of the past year, while Dalton and Josh went the esoteric route of just naming random people and/or characters they've at one point found intriguing. Hey, whatever. They go around the...
