A24 has a reputation as one of the coolest indie movie “brands” today.
Through dozens of films, they have established themselves as arbiters of extremely good taste, maintaining relationships with their favorite filmmakers while taking big swings on new talent. They have also shown themselves to be crack marketers of their own product (how many boutique film studios inspire young fans to sweat sweatshirts emblazoned with their logo?)
This brand awareness is quite powerful. Younger filmgoers know an A24 movie when they see them; and they go see movies because the studio is behind them. This knowingness, a contract between the studio and the audience, extends to A24’s horror output, which is even more easily identifiable. “It’s an A24 horror movie,” you’ll say. And whoever you’re talking to will know exactly what you mean. Maybe it’s a little folksy, maybe it’s a little techy,...

Aubrey Plaza and Noah Centineo were seen mingling during a night out at a movie theater this week.
The 39-year-old The White Lotus actress and the 27-year-old To All the Boys actor were spotted chatting in the lobby of a local cinema on Thursday night (September 28) in Los Angeles.
Noah was joined by his friend Brandon Caruso, who is actually dating his sister Taylor. They have been together since 2015!
It’s unclear if Aubrey and Noah are friends from the past, if they’re going to work together sometime soon, or if they simply ran into each other at the theater. We’d love to see them in a movie together though!

Michael Cera and Aubrey Plaza almost tied the knot more than a decade ago, all for one big joke.
The Superbad actor told Rolling Stone, in an interview published online Friday, that one time when they were driving through Las Vegas, they “almost just spontaneously took a detour and got married.”
Cera said they were looking for something like an Elvis-type chapel to “get a certificate.” He added, “I think the idea was to then get a divorce right away, so we could call each other ‘my ex-husband’ and ‘my ex-wife’ at like … 20.”
Back in 2016, Plaza revealed that the two started dating after meeting on the set of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. After a year and a half, they ended up going their separate ways, but the actress said on the RuPaul: What’s the Tee? podcast that they were still close.

Michael Cera was almost Mr. Aubrey Plaza.
The “Life and Beth” actor revealed to Rolling Stone that he almost tied the knot with “Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World” co-star Aubrey Plaza during production on the 2010 Edgar Wright film.
“We were driving through Vegas,” Cera said. “The idea was to then get a divorce right away, so we could call each other ‘my ex-husband’ and ‘my ex-wife’ at like 20.”
Cera and Plaza ultimately did not wed, with Plaza marrying filmmaker Jeff Baena in 2021 and Cera calling Nadine Cera his spouse since 2017.
However, the duo are reuniting for the upcoming “Scott Pilgrim” animated Netflix series, as announced earlier this year. The rest of the original ensemble cast, including Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Kieran Culkin, Satya Bhabha, Brie Larson, Alison Pill, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, Johnny Simmons, Mark Webber, Mae Whitman, and Ellen Wong, are also returning to voice their respective characters.

It took Aubrey Plaza close to two decades to finish “The Sopranos.”
The “White Lotus” Season 2 actress starred opposite “Sopranos” alum Michael Imperioli but had not seen the iconic HBO mafia series’ finale until she recently binged the show with “New Girl” and “Minx” star Jake Johnson.
“I’m shook,” Plaza told Vanity Fair of finally watching the polarizing “The Sopranos” series finale. “Yesterday I was like, ’Oh my God, what do you think happened?’ And [Jake] was like, ‘I don’t know but I was crying,’ and I was like, ‘I was crying too.’ I was like, ‘This is ridiculous, that we’re going through “Sopranos” finale stuff.'”
Even though “The Sopranos” is streaming on HBO platform Max, Plaza still purchased the entire show on iTunes, to husband Jeff Baena’s dismay. Plaza cited the frustrating aspect of trying to navigate streamers and keeping track of what’s available.

Editor’s note: this blog originally ran in October of last year. Spin Me Round is now available to stream on Hulu. Special thanks to Jeff Baena and author Kristopher Hewkin.

Filmmaker Jeff Baena has consistently defied expectations over his career, taking audiences on wild rides that often veer from the comedic, to thrilling, to deeply unsettling—often within the same movie. His latest, Spin Me Round, brings his all-star comedy world repertory to Italy for a tale of sun-dappled Tuscan romance gone way, way wrong. For the second film in a row, Baena co-wrote the script with lead Alison Brie, following their first successful writing collaboration on the 2020 psychological thriller Horse Girl.
Brie stars alongside Alessandro Nivola, Molly Shannon, Aubrey Plaza (a two-time Film Independent Spirit Awards host and winner!), Lil Rel Howery, Tim Heidecker and Fred Armisen. The film tells the story of Amber (Brie), a restaurant manager...

Alison Brie and Dave Franco are pros at not making things awkward on set together, including the times when Franco has to direct his wife’s sex scenes.
According to the “Glow” actress, the two have “worked together enough now” that even intimate scenes “[don’t] make Dave and I uncomfortable.”
Brie’s comments came while discussing the couple’s new movie “Somebody I Used to Know” with Jezebel. The rom-com, starring Brie, was co-written by the two and directed by Franco.

Finally, single career-focused women get a rom-com to themselves, sans judgment. In the era of Taylor Swift’s “Midnights,” Sza’s “Sos,” and Emily Henry’s novel “Book Lovers,” it’s clear that 2023 is the year of women not apologizing for their relationship statuses, nor being neatly regulated to peppy Band-Aids like Galentine’s Day to soften the blow of the annual lovefest coupledom that is Valentine’s Day. But it’s not St. Valentine’s fault: It’s ours for ignoring self-love as the crux of V-Day.
Thankfully, Alison Brie and Dave Franco have continued the unapologetic, workaholic single woman trend with “Somebody I Used to Know.” Don’t let the trailer nor first act fool you: This is a distinctly empowered subversion on “My Best Friend’s Wedding” and fellow rom-coms that came before it.
“Somebody I Used to Know” begins at what usually is the third act of a standard rom-com.

Dave Franco's sophomore directorial effort is headed to Prime Video next month, and it looks to be an angsty and romantic dramedy led by co-writer and star Alison Brie. It also looks like a surprise "Community" reunion, as none other than Danny Pudi pops up in the new first trailer sporting a mustache. Oh, and if none of that's doing it for you, "Somebody I Used To Know" looks like it might feature a musical performance from co-star Kiersey Clemons, whose track from "Hearts Beat Loud" I'm still playing on repeat five years after that movie debuted.
There's a lot more to get excited about in the trailer below, including the appearance of Tony-nominated actress Olga Meridiz and a starring role in the love triangle for "Insecure" breakout Jay Ellis. Aubrey Plaza is channeling Tim Burton for her next career move.
The “White Lotus” Season 2 star confirmed an upcoming, top-secret family-friendly film, which she wrote and is set to direct, in a cover story with GQ.
“I’m trying to fill the female Tim Burton slot,” Plaza said of the yet-untitled project, which channels “Beetlejuice” and “Hocus Pocus.” Plaza will produce through her company Evil Hag Productions.
And while the “Emily the Criminal” actress may aspire to give auteur Burton’s aesthetic a female twist, she is playing a “female Bond” for the Guy Ritchie-helmed action comedy “Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre.” Plaza and co-star Jason Statham try to out-007 one another as CIA agents, with Plaza adding, “If I’m the female Bond, what does Bond do? Bond gets the girl. Bond is objectifying everybody and also being a badass. So I objectified Statham the whole time. Literally slapping his butt.

Alessandro Nivola has always been an actor’s actor, but in the last handful of years, audiences are catching up to the fact that he’s one of the most versatile performers in town. From an Orthodox rabbi in Sebastian Lelio’s Disobedience to Tony Soprano’s tragic mentor in The Many Saints of Newark, Nivola has that unique ability to disappear into his characters. The Boston native is currently starring alongside Alison Brie and Aubrey Plaza in Jeff Baena’s Spin Me Round, which subverts the romantic comedy genre in a welcomed way. Nivola is mostly known for drama, but he’s grateful for Riley Stearns’ indie black comedy The Art of Self-Defense (2019), as it’s created more and more of these comedic opportunities for him.

When the manager of an American chain restaurant is selected to attend a special training program in Italy, her head swims with dreams of European glamour and romance. But the trip turns out to be much different — and possibly more dangerous — than the exotic getaways she imagines.
There’s a carefree, happy-go-lucky feeling from Jeff Baena‘s Spin Me Round that will make you be in a good mood almost instantly. It’s just a shame that his film is never able to keep that momentum up, with a second act that while entertaining, feels full of filler and a third act that feels far too abrupt.

“People are catching up on films,” is how one arthouse executive described the current moment in specialty, which echoes the slowdown in studio wide releases.
August can be slow ahead of a trio of festivals – Venice, Toronto, New York – and a ramp up to awards season. It can also offer an less obstructed runway for specialty films to cross over (Gwyneth Paltrow in Emma). This summer has been slow, but strong word of mouth has boosted select films. Warner Bros.’ Elvis for one, is at 143 million, pushing five times what it made opening weekend. Focus Features’ Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris opened at 2 million but will cross 10 million. Rrr is a phenomenon, passing 11M. Greg Laemmle said he’s bringing the blockbuster from India back on August 26. Laemmle is also holding an event screening for Neon documentary Fire Of Love next Wed. and hopes that will keep other runs going.

[Editor’s note: The following story contains some spoilers for “Spin Me Round.”]
It’s difficult to dispute Aubrey Plaza’s versatility. From embarking on a credit card-swiping crime spree in “Emily the Criminal” to just maybe being the new Lara Croft in a “Tomb Raider” reboot and even taking apart the very concept of acting in “Black Bear,” Plaza has gone out of her way to deconstruct any attempts at typecasting her.
So when “Spin Me Round,” the fourth collaboration with longtime creative partner and husband Jeff Baena, placed Plaza back in Italy after “The Little Hours” and upcoming Sicily-set Season 2 of “The White Lotus,” it was clear no one knew what to expect of her character. And boy, does Plaza keep us on our toes in the dark comedy that simultaneously subverts rom-com expectations and tells an all-to-true #MeToo story enhanced by a subtly slimy flavor that infects what should be a lush Tuscan getaway.

Plot: A woman wins an all-expenses trip to a company’s gorgeous “institute” outside of Florence. She also gets the chance to meet the restaurant chain’s wealthy and charismatic owner. She finds a different adventure than the one she imagined.
Review: Spin Me Round is Jeff Baena‘s latest outing in the world of off-beat comedy and he’s brought many of his usual collaborators along for the ride. So is it just as weird and off-kilter as the rest of his filmography? What starts as a standard romantic comedy slowly devolves into a weird mystery. Baena has always had a knack for off-kilter comedies and here he feels like he’s at the absolute height of his talents. So if you’ve enjoyed the rest of Baena’s work, it’s hard to imagine this would be any different.

“Spin Me Round” stars Ayden Mayeri and Debby Ryan got along so well while filming the new indie comedy “Spin Me Round” in Tuscany that they ended up getting matching tattoos after production wrapped.
“We all became great friends in Italy,” Mayeri told Variety at the movie’s premiere on Wednesday in Los Angeles. “So while we were shooting, Debby and I thought it would be a great idea to get a tattoo in honor of the movie. The rest of the cast was like ‘absolutely not!’ So when we returned home, Debby and I were determined to show our commitment to each other. So we drew up a design with tattoo artist and friend Colin Rigsby!”
The tattoo is a black ink inscription on their legs that says “Frizzante,” which means “sparkling” in Italian. Mayeri, who’s red carpet dress at the premiere was bought at a flea market outside their Tuscany hotel,...

Following The Little Hours, Horse Girl and Joshy, Jeff Baena and Alison Brie are back for their fourth indie collaboration — and second (after Horse Girl) as co-writers.
Spin Me Round, which Baena also directs and produces while Brie stars and produces, follows a woman who wins an all-expenses-paid trip to Italy through the Italian restaurant where she works, setting up an adventure after she meets the restaurant chain’s wealthy owner.
“After we made our film Horse Girl together, Jeff came to me and said, ‘I read an article about an exemplary managers program that is run out of an Italian chain restaurant in the States,’ and the article sort of outlined how lackluster that program was; how there were big promises of full immersion in Italian culture but actually it was just like a lot of American managers from restaurants hanging out,...

Just when it seems every production under the sun seems to be jetting off to Italy, “Spin Me Round” writer-director Jeff Baena looked for another angle: to dismantle the fantasy facade of the romanticized nation, and then, well, spin it. Baena’s “Spin Me Round,” which he co-wrote with lead star and frequent collaborator Alison Brie is part coming-of-age story and part slap in the face of the “expectation versus reality” memes, all wrapped up in a #MeToo mystery.
In the film, which debuted at SXSW in March and is being released this week, Brie plays Amber, a manager at fast food restaurant Tuscan Grove, an Olive Garden insert, who wins a corporate retreat to Italy. While her fellow top-earning managers are also attending the company seminars, Amber only has eyes for franchise founder Nick Martucci (Alessandro Nivola).

Alison Brie and Dave Franco are one of those rare Hollywood couples that seem to just work. Brie says one reason for their close connection apparently stems from them working hard to keep in touch, despite their schedules.
Brie and Franco walked the red carpet at a special IFC screening of her new film, “Spin Me Round”, at The London West Hollywood at Beverly Hills, and the celebrated actress spoke with Et’s Cassie Dilaura about her happy marriage of five years — as well as their upcoming project.
Brie is starring in the forthcoming romantic dramedy “Somebody I Used to Know”, which Franco is directing and was co-written by the couple.
“To me the best part is getting to experience all these other people on set realizing how incredible he is,” Brie said of getting to work with her husband on a film. “I already know, [but] its really fun to...

Reflecting upon a film like Spin Me Round, it helps to keep Roger Ebert’s classic quote in mind: “It’s not what a movie is about, it’s how it is about it.” The new film from director Jeff Baena is, on its Euro-sheen surface, a romantic comedy about Amber (Alison Brie), an unambitious thirtysomething manager at a…...

After one of the worst weekends at the box office since February, many have been ready to give up on the summer of 2022, but never fear. There’s still a few hopes that things will pick up before Labor Day — but not that much hope, really. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.

In the movie, Elba plays the father of two teen daughters who all go on an African safari only to encounter the beast of the title, a rogue lion with deadly intentions.
It seems like a great high-concept creature thriller ala 2019’s “Crawl,” which opened with 12 million in July and actually held up well due to word-of-mouth. It’s hard to tell whether Elba’s considerable star power might be in play,...

There are a number of reasons to recommend Spin Me Round, a winning comedy about the manager of an Olive Garden-style restaurant who gets chosen to attend a training program in Italy. The film features a shockingly stacked supporting cast of comedy titans: Aubrey Plaza, Tim Heidecker, Molly Shannon, Fred Armisen, Lil Rel Howery, The Office’s Zach Woods, Looking’s Lauren Weedman, and High Maintenance’s Ben Sinclair. The latest from director Jeff Baena, whose strange and wildly diverse filmography includes Life After Beth and The Little Hours, Spin Me Round stood out as one of the better comedies in a strong SXSW lineup earlier this year––even its Harlequin romance novel-aping poster is a gem.
However, the top reason to see Spin Me Round—it is not even close, really—is Alison Brie landing a starring role perfectly suited for her talents. The Glow star co-wrote the script with Baena,...

IFC Films is acquiring North American rights to Stephen Frears’ drama The Lost King, starring Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) and Steve Coogan (The Trip), ahead of its world premiere at the 47th Toronto Film Festival.
The film reuniting Frears with writers Coogan and Jeff Pope—who adapted the script for his 2013 dramedy Philomena—tells the remarkable true story of amateur historian Philippa Langley (Hawkins), who was behind the real life discovery of King Richard III in 2012 after the remains had been lost for 500 years. Langley spent years researching and searching for the remains, in spite of skepticism from friends, family and academics. Her story is one of a woman who refused to be ignored and who took on the country’s most eminent historians, forcing them to think again about one of the most controversial kings in England’s history. Exclusive: IFC Films has acquired North American rights to the comedy Bar Fight!, starring Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Rachel Bloom (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), Luka Jones (Shrill) and Julian Gant (Call Me Kat), with plans for a day-and-date release on November 11.
The synopsis for the film written and directed by Klaus scribe Jim Mahoney is as follows: There’s only one way to settle the score after a break-up and for Nina (Fumero) and Allen (Jones) it’s a turf war for their favorite local bar. Lines have been drawn and with the help of Nina’s best friend Chelsea (Bloom), it’s going to be a winner-takes-all affair. The drinks are free flowing, the competition is fierce, and games are out-of-this-world crazy. With the bar on the line, this Bar Fight! is going to become a battle for the ages.
Bar Fight! was produced by Sarah Gabriel and Marc Goldberg of Signature Films, and James Harris and Mark Lane of Tea Shop Productions. Executive producers included Tomás Yankelevich, Peter Bevan and Mariana Sanjurjo from Particular Crowd, and Simon Williams and Jamie Jessop from Ingenious Media. Signature Entertainment is handling international sales.
“I’m so thrilled IFC is distributing our crazy lil’ movie!” said Mahoney. “A huge thank you to Signature Films and Particular Crowd for their endless support, my invaluable crew for their skill and tenacity, and an absolute dream of a cast for truly bringing Bar Fight to life. I can’t wait for the world to see the madness we’ve created.”
Established in 2000 and based in New York City, IFC Films is a leading U.S. distributor of independent film. Other current and upcoming releases include Andrew Seman’s Resurrection, Jeff Baena’s Spin Me Round, Official Competition from Gastón Duprat and Mariano Cohn, Claire Denis’ Both Sides of the Blade, Andrea Arnold’s first documentary Cow, Jacques Audiard’s Paris, 13th District, and the Venice Golden Lion winner Happening, directed by Audrey Diwan.
Adam Koehler negotiated the deal for Bar Fight! on behalf of IFC Films, with Andrew Nerger of Signature Entertainment on behalf of the production.

This August is the month of Aubrey Plaza. Just a week after her crime drama Emily the Criminal arrives in theaters, her comedy Spin Me Round will debut. The SXSW selection, led Alison Brie alongside Plaza, comes from writer-director Jeff Baena and ahead of the release, the first trailer has arrived.
Also starring Alessandro Nivola, Molly Shannon, Tim Heidecker, Ayden Mayeri, Zach Woods, Ben Sinclair, Fred Armisen, and Tim Heidecker, the film follows Brie’s character who is flown to an Italian immersion program on her company’s dime. What starts as a romantic getaway devolves into chaos. With a font liberally nodding to Woody Allen, the Italian adventure looks like some light, fun summer fare before the season winds down.
See the trailer below.

All Amber wants is an “Under the Tuscan Sun” kind of love affair. What she gets, though, is a much darker twist on an Italian happily ever after.
Alison Brie stars as Amber, a manager at fast food restaurant Tuscan Grove (big Olive Garden energy) who wins a corporate retreat to Italy. While her fellow top-earning managers, played by Molly Shannon, Zach Woods, Tim Heidecker, and Debby Ryan, are also attending the company seminars, Amber only has eyes for franchise founder Nick Martucci (Alessandro Nivola). Yet Nick’s assistant Kat (Aubrey Plaza) seems to be letting Amber in on a secret about Nick…
“What she thought would be a romantic getaway devolves into chaos and catastrophe,” the official synopsis teases of Amber’s fate, as Nick’s friends constantly compliment her for being so “open-minded.” Just what, exactly, is going on?!

"Listen - I think something weird might be going on." IFC Films has revealed the full-length official trailer for a wacky indie dark comedy film titled Spin Me Round, the latest creation from indie filmmaker Jeff Baena and actor Alison Brie. This first premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, and also played at this year's Seattle Film Festival. Brie & Baena previously made Joshy, The Little Hours, and Horse Girl together - they've got quite a collaboration going. Flown out to an Italian immersion program on her company's dime, what starts as a romantic getaway devolves into chaos in this wild new comedy. The film stars an impressive ensemble: Alison Brie, Alessandro Nivola, Molly Shannon, Tim Heidecker, Ayden Mayeri, Zach Woods, Ben Sinclair, Fred Armisen, and Aubrey Plaza. This looks good! I'm curious to find out what is going on with this guy and all the mystery. Seems like kooky fun!

Move over, Brad Pitt/George Clooney, Ryan Gosling/Emma Stone, and dare I even say Al Pacino/Robert De Niro. Make way for the unstoppable force that is the Alison Brie and Aubrey Plaza team-up.
We've had the pleasure of watching both talented actors play off one another in 2017's "The Little Hours," the irreverent little comedy that put a hilariously modern twist on 14th century subject matter. Not content to strike gold only to let that collaboration turn into a one-and-done deal, filmmaker Jeff Baena decided to follow that up with a brand-new project and bring along Plaza, Brie, and even Molly Shannon for the ride.

Is the rom-com due for a transformation? The new film “Spin Me Round” thinks so. Having premiered earlier this at the film SXSW Film Festival, “Spin Me Round” stars Alison Brie as a woman whose business trip embraces romantic chaos. It also marks Brie’s second credit as co-writer — her first being the critically acclaimed “Horse Girl.” Both projects paired the actress with co-writer and director Jeff Baena.

"Pull up a chair, and mangia!" IFC Films has unveiled a first look teaser for the wacky indie dark comedy titled Spin Me Round, the latest from filmmaker Jeff Baena and actor Alison Brie. The two previously made the films Joshy and The Little Hours and Horse Girl together. This new one premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival, and also played at this year's Seattle Film Festival. Flown out to an Italian immersion program on her company's dime, what starts as a romantic getaway devolves into chaos in this wild new comedy. This is obviously riffing on Olive Garden, the most bland Italian restaurant you can find in America. I am curious to know what goes down after she lands in Italy and learns what's really going on.

With the first episode written and executive produced by Jim Hecht and based on the eponymous Playboy article from Joshuah Bearman, The Big Cigar tells the extraordinary, hilarious, almost-too-good-to-be-true story of how Newton relied on his best friend, Bert Schneider (Nivola), the Hollywood producer behind Easy Rider, to elude a nationwide manhunt and escape to Cuba while being pursued into exile by the FBI.

Exclusive: Jeff Baena’s Spin Me Round, which made its world premiere at SXSW last month, has seen its North American rights get scooped up by IFC Films and AMC+. The pic will hit theaters and VOD and stream exclusively on AMC+ this summer.
The pic reps filmmaker Baena’s reteam with Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza and Molly Shannon, who star in the film. Baena and Brie previously teamed on Horse Girl, she starred in and co-wrote with Baena, who also directed. Brie also appeared in Baena’s The Little Hours and Joshy. Plaza has starred in Baena’s The Little Hours, Joshy and Life After Beth.

A frothy wish-fulfillment comedy that takes a few wildly unpredictable turns, “Spin Me Round” serves up an al dente satire of corporate retreat culture by following the manager of a popular pasta restaurant on an all-expenses-paid trip to Italy, where nothing goes as she expected. Amber (Alison Brie) imagines something along the lines of the company’s TV commercials, in which handsome Tuscan Grove founder Nick Martucci (Alessandro Nivola) serves pasta in the shade of the family villa — the ideal backdrop for a straightforward rom-com scenario. But this sly, if slightly undercooked movie has other plans, earning its title as it keeps us guessing.
Reteaming with “Horse Girl” director Jeff Baena, Brie co-wrote the script, conceiving her own character as a basic, ambitionless Audrey Hepburn type — all the better to misdirect audiences, who’ve been led to believe they’re in for a low-budget “Roman Holiday,” rather than the more...
