Kim Hopkins’ thoughtful documentary about the Bradford Movie Makers club has some unexpectedly deep things to say about camaraderie, community and male friendship
It’s not an insult: the Bradford Movie Makers proudly call themselves a bunch of amateurs. Since 1932, members have been making virtually zero-budget films with rickety production values and acting of a quality that often results in fond mickey-taking among themselves. With this warm and rather wonderful documentary Kim Hopkins finds comedy in their idiosyncratic passion without ever being mean or mocking. A Bunch of Amateurs is a thoughtful film about film-making and has some unexpectedly deep things to say too about camaraderie, community and male friendship – though there are a couple of women in the club’s ageing membership.
There are some big personalities too. Colin, a retired carpenter in his 80s, is a veteran member who remembers the good old days, when the organisation had...

MetFilm has announced the release date and debuted a trailer for the documentary ‘A Bunch of Amateurs.’
To be released in UK cinemas on 11 November, the doc follows the members of Britain’s oldest amateur film club, the film won the Audience Award at this year’s Sheffield Doc Fest.
Members of a quintessentially British working-class amateur filmmaking club, ‘Bradford Movie Makers’ grow old together amid flickering memories and challenging final years. Clinging to their dreams, and to each other, fuelled by endless cups of tea, this gently comedic, profoundly moving portrait of shared artistic folly speaks to the escapist dreamer in us all and to the enduring power of face-to-face time together, in an increasingly lonely, digital age.
Kim Hopkins directs and produces under her Labor of Love Films banner, alongside co-founder Margareta Szabo and The BFI Doc Society Fund. Simon Beaufoy executive produces alongside Lisa Marie Russo, Caroline Cooper Charles,...

Nomzamo Mbatha (“Coming 2 America”) is set to star in period drama “Shaka Ilembe” about the iconic African king. The series is set in 1700s and will also star Lemogang Tsipa and newcomer Ntando Zondi, who will both play Shaka at different ages, Thembinkosi Mthembu as King Dingiswayo and Senzo Radebe as King Senzangakhona.
Mbatha, who will play Queen Nandi, Shaka’s mother, will also executive produce. “I am honoured to bring the giant that is Queen Nandi to life,” she said. “History will remember those who informed its people of where we come from, to better understand who we are. I am fortunate to be part of a project that is much bigger than ourselves and to tell this story in our own language. Impi iyeza!”
The series comes from MultiChoice and Bomb Productions.

Filth | Sunshine On Leith | The Perverts Guide To Ideology | For Those In Peril | How I Live Now | The Crash Reel | Thanks For Sharing | Camp 14 | The To Do List | Emperor
Filth (18)
(Jon S Baird, 2013, UK) James McAvoy, Jamie Bell, Eddie Marsan, Imogen Poots. 97 mins
Drugs, sleaze, sex, Scots, Irvine Welsh – is it 1996 again? This is just as energetic as Trainspotting, but less hip and more theatrically grim, wallowing in the debauchery and mania of a copper bent way out of shape. The only subtlety to be found is on the face of McAvoy, whose committed performance holds it all together.
Sunshine On Leith (PG)
(Dexter Fletcher, 2013, UK) George MacKay, Kevin Guthrie. 100 mins
It worked for Abba, so why not the Proclaimers? Basing an Edinburgh love story around their music turns out to be a fine idea.
The Pervert's Guide To Ideology (15)
(Sophie Fiennes, 2013, UK) 133 mins
Slavoj Žižek gives an absorbing, annotated...

This documentary about a hotel offers an eccentric and thoroughly English rejoinder to last year's The Queen of Versaille
Though it bears the unmistakable look of daytime-telly property porn, Kim Hopkins' documentary offers an eccentric and thoroughly English rejoinder to last year's The Queen of Versailles. In 2007, Helen Heraty and husband John Edwards moved into York's historic Grays Court, staking their (sizeable) personal fortune on turning it into a hotel. Though the crunch is coming, the film's focus remains narrow: with John away at work, we're left pottering around the kitchen as Helen juggles seven kids with increasingly fraught calls from her accountant. It appears as though Hopkins might be hanging the couple out to dry for past excesses – then this war of financial attrition takes a melancholy turn.
Earlier, funnier confrontations counter Versailles' faded glitz with twitching curtains, tetchy boundary disputes and plentiful bathos: just when you think...

All over the planet, filmgoers are getting ready to fork out for the latest films - here's where you can find out whether they're any good.
• We've got a bunch of British films to look over this week, kicking off with Sunshine on Leith, the Proclaimers-soundtracked musical directed by Dexter "Get Babyface!" Fletcher. With three big stars from Peter Bradshaw, it's clear Fletcher is becoming a proper film director. Another Scottish-set film, For Those in Peril, gets a decent three stars, hot from its Cannes premiere, while How We Live Now, starring Saoirse Ronan and directed by Kevin Macdonald, is similarly awarded. Incredible as it may seem, All Three films feature a young man called George MacKay, who is accorded an interview in Film & Music to mark the achievement.
• Not so well liked (and, strangely, not featuring George) is Filth,...

UK documentary set to premiere at Cambridge Film Festival.
Ballpark Film Distributors has secured an agreement to distribute documentary Folie à Deux - A Madness Made of Two in the UK from Oct 4, 2013.
Produced by Labor of Love Films and shot over five years, it follows a self-made, single mother of seven, who risks everything to turn the oldest house in England into an exclusive hotel. But when the credit crunch hits the gamble fails and the family find themselves on benefits.
The film will receive its UK premiere at the Cambridge Film Festival tomorrow [Sept 20], where directors Kim Hopkins, subject Helen Heraty and executive producer Simon Beaufoy, the screenwriter behind The Full Monty, Slumdog Millionaire and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, will attend the screening and talk about the film.
Kim Hopkins, who directed the film, said: “I started filming in late 2007 when everyone was ‘up-sizing’ and house prices were going through the roof. I set out...
