SiriusXM swung to a $677 million net loss last quarter from a $243 million profit the year before on a one-time, noncash charge of $976 million at Pandora. The anticipated hit was based on Pandora’s royalty cost structure.
Quarterly revenue rose 6% to $2.19 billion, beating Wall Street expectations. The shares were up 1.4% in early trading.
New CEO Jennifer Witz, who replaced longtime chief executive Jim Meyer earlier this month, said SiriusXM, Pandora, Stitcher and SoundCloud now reach an audience of more than 150 million. The fourth quarter was key as the company agreed with star host Howard Stern to extend his contract and also closed on the Stitcher purchase, planting a flag in podcasting.
The company, controlled by John Malone’s Liberty Media, added 279,000 satellite radio subscribers during the last quarter. It lost 63,000 subs at Pandora — less than 88,000 the year before. Pandora’s ad supported listener hours hours fell 8%, but ad revenue per thousand...

Spotify founder-ceo Daniel Ek made a three-pronged pitch Wednesday to Howard Stern, the massively popular host whose multi-year contract with satellite broadcaster SiriusXM expires at year end.
Asked why Stern might prefer Spotify to SiriusXM, Ek said, “I can’t really speak to Howard Stern specifically” but then expatiated on the “more and more great creators around the world that are turning to streaming service Spotify” for its scale, global reach and interactive opportunities. He was speaking on a conference call to discuss the streaming giant’s second-quarter earnings.
“Because this is an interactive medium, it allows them to better connect with their audience, seeing the data, seeing how they are engaging with the content, seeing the feedback directly. It is an international platform too, not just domestic. So while we are very large in America, we are equally large in Europe and Latam and Asia as well,” said Ek.

Let me ask you something. Given the opportunity, would you decline to work on a franchise you think is silly, or would you bite the bullet and try to start a revolt from the inside? That's something I wonder about David Slade directing the third Twilight movie, which apparently promises to be a little different. In this edition, we'll also take a look at the latest District 9 controversy, a Mamma Mia! without Abba, and the zombie Patrick Swayze that never was.
The Good
• Roger Corman is getting an Oscar! Can you believe it? The Academy has decided to give the King of B-movies an honorary award for his memorable works, alongside actress Lauren Bacall, producer John Calley and cinematographer Gordon Willis. Maybe next year, they can give one to Russ Meyer.
• One of my most anticipated films at the moment, The Prophet, has just been picked as France's entry for the 2010 Academy Awards.
