Method acting isn’t for everyone, but some derive a particular thrill from escaping into the personalities they play on screen. It’s a way to embody the character completely, surrendering to their will and whim within reason. Lady Gaga is a significant fan of the technique, as evidenced by the actress keeping her Italian accent while playing Patrizia Reggiani for Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci. She also stayed in character as Ally Maine for years leading up to 2018’s A Star is Born. While it’s possible to admire the dedication to playing a part, some find the practice frustrating and disruptive in the workplace. Take Lawrence Sher, for example, who’s the cinematographer for the Todd Phillips sequel Joker: Folie à Deux. During a recent podcast interview, Sher discussed feeling alienated by Gaga due to the star’s request to be called ‘Lee’ during filming.

Joker Dp Lawrence Sher has been named president of the jury for this year’s FilmLight Color Awards, which are open to TV and movie colorists.
The jury also includes cinematographers Greig Fraser, an Oscar winner for Dune who also lensed the upcoming sequel; Natasha Braier, whose credits include Honey Boy; and American Society of Cinematographers past presidents Michael Goi and Stephen Lighthill.
“I’m very excited to be president of the FilmLight Color Awards [jury],” said Sher, who earned an Oscar nom for Joker, and whose work includes Godzilla: King of the Monsters, War Dogs, The Hangover, Garden State and the upcoming Joker sequel. “I believe the color tools we have today are perhaps — along with the digital sensor — the most transformative change in filmmaking in the last 50 years. My relationship and collaboration with my colorists is as important as any relationship I have with my camera, grip and lighting teams.

Stefani Germanotta has juggled a couple of different names throughout her life: Stef, Mother Monster, and, of course, Lady Gaga. But when it came time to star as Harley Quinn in Todd Phillips’ sequel to Joker, she wanted to use a completely different alias, according to cinematographer Larry Sher.
Sher was a guest on a recent episode of The Trenches Talk podcast to chat about Joker: Folie à Deux and Gaga’s on-set demeanor. Noting the pop star-turned actress’ “method” tendencies, Sher explained that he had a difficult time connecting with her at first.
“Strangely, I felt like I never even met her, even during the makeup and hair tests,” he said. “Maybe it was my philosophy of not trying to get in their space. I remember for a week, being like, ‘God, I feel like we are disconnecting. Not even connecting. We are like on opposites.’ And I would say to my crew,...

Lady Gaga apparently didn’t want to be called by her actual name on the “Joker: Folie à Deux” set.
Cinematographer Lawrence Sher recalled how the singer — whose real name is Stefani Germanotta — wanted to go by the name “Lee” during filming.
Sher told “The Trenches Talk” podcast, “I remember I didn’t know Stefani at all and, strangely, I felt like I never even really met her, even during the makeup and hair test,” Entertainment Weekly reported.
“I remember for like a week being like, ‘God, I feel like we’re like disconnecting, not even connecting, we’re like, on opposites.’ I’d say to my crew, ‘Jesus, I can’t like crack it. I feel like she either hates me or we hate each other, or there’s something weird going on here.'”

Lawrence Sher, the Oscar-nominated cinematographer for “Joker,” revealed on “The Trenches Talk” podcast that he “never even met” Lady Gaga on the set of the sequel, “Joker: Folie à Deux,” because she was presumably in character the whole time (via IndieWire). Gaga stars opposite returning lead Joaquin Phoenix in the 2024 comic book movie, which casts her as Harley Quinn opposite Phoenix’s Joker. Sher said it wasn’t until he started calling Gaga by the name “Lee” (presumably a nod to Harley) that she even warmed up to him.
“I didn’t know Stefani at all,” Sher said referring to Gaga’s real name, Stefani Germanotta. “Strangely, I felt like I never even met her, even during the makeup/hair tests. Maybe it was my philosophy of not trying to get in their space. And then I remember for a week, being like, ‘God, I feel like we are disconnecting.

Lady Gaga is up to her usual Method acting tricks again, again, according to “Joker: Folie à Deux” cinematographer Lawrence Sher.
In a recent podcast interview circulated online, Sher said Lady Gaga’s assistant director asked that she be called “Lee” during the production, and that suddenly changed the dynamic of the set.
“I didn’t know Stefani at all,” he said, referring to the “Fame Monster” icon’s born name, “Stefani Germanotta.” “Strangely, I felt like I never even met her, even during the makeup/hair tests. Because again, maybe it was my philosophy of not trying to get in their space. And then I remember for a week, being like, god, I feel like we are disconnecting. Not even connecting. We are like on opposites. And I would say to my crew, ‘Jesus, I can’t, like, crack it. She either hates me or we hate each other.
