"Under the helmet." Prime Video has debuted a trailer for another sports biopic documentary titled Kelce, about the All-Pro football player Jason Kelce. This is made by NFL Films, which means it's just one big glorified commercial for the NFL, but don't skip it yet. The film is directed by award-winning doc filmmaker Don Argott, who has directed many other fantastic docs over the last 20 years: The Art of the Steal, The Atomic States of America, As the Palaces Burn, Batman & Bill, Framing John DeLorean, Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time, and Keep Sweet. Kelce is an intimate and emotional feature-length documentary film that chronicles Philadelphia Eagles team captain and All-Pro center Jason Kelce's 2022-23 season, which began with him confronting one of the most challenging decisions any professional athlete will ever face—is now the time to hang it up? The film culminates with the historic Super Bowl face-off...

Of every beloved film from the 1980’s, there are perhaps none more beloved by my inner-child than 1985’s Back To The Future. The film was written by Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis- Zemeckis also being the film’s director. While we can look back on Robert Zemeckis’ career today and see a wide variety of quality across his filmography, at the time Back To The Future was being made there was no one better for the massive undertaking of bringing this sci-fi adventure movie to audiences.
Of course, the making of this film was riddled with re-writes, re-shoots, and even massive recasting. Famously, Eric Stoltz was cast in the role of the film’s main character- Marty McFly. Through filming, Stoltz turned in a darker and more moody performance that lacked the youthful charm that Zemeckis was looking for. This led to Stoltz being fired from the film mid-way...

The name of late legal legend Howard Weitzman will no longer be on the door of the firm he co-founded, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. It’s a move that his family feels is an attempt to erase his legacy.
Weitzman, whose work for infamous automaker John DeLorean made him a household name in the mid-1980s, spent decades representing some of the biggest names in entertainment, including Michael Jackson, O.J. Simpson, Marlon Brando, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Justin Bieber and Chuck Lorre. He died in April 2021 after quietly battling cancer.
The firm, which will now be known as Kinsella Holley Iser Kump and Steinsapir, reached out to Weitzman’s family over the holiday weekend to let them know the change was coming. Its new domain — khiks.com — was registered back in March, according to Icann.

For the past 20 years, Jason Sudeikis has been one of the most prominent voices in American comedy. The actor and comedian came into the world with at least one showbiz connection -- his uncle is George Wendt of "Cheers" fame -- but he has carved out his own unique space in film and television, outwardly the clean-cut straight man, but with deep reserves of cynicism hidden underneath a bright smile. Sudeikis got his start with the Second City improv troupe before eventually being hired by "Saturday Night Live," where his career really took off. Since working on the show for a decade, he has developed a thriving career that encompasses television, independent dramedies, and big-budget blockbusters.
His filmography showcases a keen eye for both interesting characters with unexpected facets to their personality and projects that capitalize on his strengths as a performer. Over the years, Sudeikis has earned rave reviews from both audiences and critics,...

Jason Sudeikis is arguably most recognized now for his award-winning work in the acclaimed Apple TV+ series "Ted Lasso," but the actor had a strong start in the entertainment industry before that. In 2003, he started working as a writer for "Saturday Night Live," and he went on to work on the beloved live comedy show as both an actor and writer for the next 10 years before his departure in 2013. After he gained popularity on "SNL," Sudeikis appeared in other shows, including "30 Rock" from 2007 to 2010 and "The Cleveland Show," which he voice acted for from 2009 to 2013.
Following his success on TV, Sudeikis turned his attention to movies, notably starring in comedies like "Horrible Bosses" alongside Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman, "The Campaign," and "We're the Millers" in the early 2010s. Along with his comedic performances, the actor also has taken on roles in indie films like "Sleeping With Other People,...

The investigative docuseries "The New York Times Presents" has examined some of the most high-profile stories in news and pop culture since its debut in 2019, ranging from Janet Jackson's Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction to the conservatorship of Britney Spears. The latest installment in the series, "Sin Eater: The Crimes of Anthony Pellicano," dives into the gritty work of "Hollywood Fixer" Anthony Pellicano, a private investigator that worked for some of Hollywood's top lawyers, musicians, comedians, actors, and more from the 1980s to the early 2000s.
Pellicano's unorthodox and often ruthless methods ultimately led to his downfall. In 2006, he was formally out of the business when he was arrested on charges of conspiring to wiretap and blackmail. After a trial that exposed his covert operation, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2008.

Exclusive: A busy week for Judy Greer. Earlier we reported that she was starring in the indie film LA Bound, and today we hear she will play Mrs. G. in the Nicholas Ma directed feature Mabel.
Joy Goodwin and Ma wrote the script for Mabel which centers around Callie, whose only friends are the plants and trees that surround her home. When her dad’s job moves the family to a sterile subdivision, she is utterly isolated—except for her best friend, a potted plant named Mabel. To Callie, Mabel is a peer, a fellow being, maybe overlooked or unseen, but still very much alive.
Helen Estabrook, Luca Borghesde and Ben Howe are producing.
Greer is repped by Artists First, CAA and Felker Toczek.
Greer can next be seen in Universal/Blumhouse’s highly anticipated David Gordon Green directed sequel Halloween Kills opening on Oct. 15. She is currently filming the...

Two years ago, the Academy documentary branch had to grapple with a record 170 documentary feature submissions for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar. This year, it’s not so bad: only 159 were entered. The short list of 15 will be announced, along with eight others, on December 16.
All year, branch members have been getting lists of secure online screeners available to watch on the Academy website, increasing in volume, with more to come. Each voter is assigned a list of about 22-23 films to screen, so they all get covered. But it’s a burden to see them all, so the ones with the most attention move to the top of the much-watch list.
Give the advantage to box-office hits that were made available earlier in the year such as Neon’s “The Biggest Little Farm” and “Apollo 11,” as well as high-profile titles from HBO (“Diego Maradona” and “The Apollo”), Netflix,...

Jason Sudeikis and Lee Pace star in a flashy true-crime thriller about the an FBI informant and his car-making crony
Screenwriter and novelist Colin Bateman has here scripted a flashy but watchable true-crime thriller in the style of American Made (2017) or Blow (2001).
It’s based on the stranger-than-fiction case of Jim Hoffman, a drug-runner and FBI informant who in the late 70s happened to be a California neighbour of automobile entrepreneur John DeLorean, who at that time was having real trouble selling the sports car he had designed, with its falcon-wing doors and its unreliable engine, coming sluggishly off the production line in a Northern Ireland factory with financial help from the British government. (The car’s sole success was its iconic appearance in Back to the Future.) Desperate for cash, DeLorean accepted a dodgy deal from Hoffman, hoping to ease his cash-flow worries with cocaine profits from Hoffman’s sleazy drug-dealer contacts.

Incredible true stories don’t always promise incredible film results. Part of the problem is finding a heart of the subject’s life that suits the process of storytelling. Something that happens over the course of a lifetime might not lend itself to a two hour structure.
It’s a challenge facing Driven’s writer Colin Bateman and director Nick Hamm, the pair who have taken on the task of detailing the true events that befell John DeLorean (Lee Pace), the auto exec who took a successful career and flushed it completely down the toilet.
He rose to the top at General Motors by making bold decisions, before going off on his own to produce what he thought would be a unique piece of car design, one that he would slap his own name on so it could live on for generations. He wanted to make a timeless machine out of a DeLorean.

Fall is upon us, and so is Hulu’s list of every title coming and going from the streaming service in November.
Among the list of arriving titles is a new episode of Hulu’s original monthly anthology series, “Into the Dark.” November’s episode is called “Pilgrim,” and claims to be inspired by true events — in which a woman invites a bunch of Pilgrim re-enactors over for Thanksgiving dinner. But things get spooky when the “actors” refuse to break character.
Other new arrivals include Season 5 of “You’re the Worst,” described as a modern look at love, the complete first seasons of “Dollface,” about a young woman re-entering the world of women, “The Accident,” which begins with a deadly explosion at a construction site, and “Love Island: Australia,” an answer to the U.K. and U.S. versions of the beloved reality dating show.

Lee Pace and Jared Harris have been cast in the lead roles of the upcoming Apple series “Foundation,” Variety has learned.
The series is based on the Isaac Asimov novel series of the same name. It chronicles the saga of The Foundation, a band of exiles who discover that the only way to save the Galactic Empire from destruction is to defy it.
Harris will star as Hari Seldon, a mathematical genius who predicts the demise of the empire. Pace will star as Brother Day, the current Emperor of the Galaxy.
Pace previously starred in the acclaimed AMC series “Halt and Catch Fire” and also led the cult favorite ABC series “Pushing Daisies.” On the film side, he most recently starred as John DeLorean in the film “Driven,” which was the closing film of this year’s Venice Film Festival and also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. Jason Sudeikis has a real talent for making characters more likable than they probably are on paper. In the case of his new movie, Driven, he plays John DeLorean’s buddy, Jim Hoffman, a guy with a knack for bullshitting. He frequently lies, and yet there’s something oddly charming about the F.B.I. informant – maybe his honesty about […]

Who is more of a fascinating individual than John DeLorean? The maker of the automobile of the same name is just as well known for that car as being involved in shady drug dealings. Some remember him as a genius in the auto field, but most think of him either for flopping with his company or being put on trial. That intrigue helps fuel the new film Driven, which presents DeLorean as a side character to the life of Jim Hoffman, who befriended and then potentially betrayed him. If that sounds like the set up for a dark flick, you’d be mistaken. This is far more lighthearted than you might initially think, though the seriousness if the matters at hand are never too far from the spotlight. The movie is a mix of comedy, crime, drama, and thriller. Taking place in San Diego in the early 1980’s, the story...

Behind-the-scenes featurettes have long enumerated the many obstacles any movie or TV show has had to overcome to reach the theater or TV screen. But few films faced hardships as severe as those overcome by “Driven,” the real-life hero-to-zero story of automaker John DeLorean (played by Lee Pace) and his misadventures with ex-con pilot-turned-FBI informant Jim Hoffman (Jason Sudeikis). Directed by Nick Hamm, “Driven” was in its first days of principal photography in Puerto Rico in September 2017 when Hurricane Maria was bearing down on the island.
Line producer René Besson grew up in South Florida and has survived a few hurricanes in his day, even getting the Jason Statham action vehicle “Homefront” through 2012’s Hurricane Isaac in Louisiana. Familiar with the trajectories of weather patterns, he was closely watching Maria’s progress the night before landfall on the Caribbean isle.

Nearly 15 years after his death, John DeLorean’s life story still feels tailor-made for the movies. He rose and fell, and then did it again. He married and remarried, and then did it again. He made huge mistakes, miraculously escaped punishment, and then — well, you get the idea.
So perhaps the problem is that there’s too much material here? “Driven” is the second film this summer to address DeLorean’s life, and the second one to feel overwhelmed by its subject. In the more ambitious “Framing John DeLorean,” documentarians Sheena Joyce and Don Argott addressed their subject head-on, mixing various styles and genres in an attempt to understand him.
Here, director Nick Hamm (“The Journey”) and writer Colin Bateman skirt the edges of his experience, as if they’re too intimidated to approach it directly. So we get a relatively amusing dramedy, but one in which DeLorean remains a...

There are a few good reasons to see Nick Hamm’s Driven, (releasing August 16th on Digital and VOD) and four of them can be discerned rather quickly: Jason Sudekis, Lee Pace, Judy Greer and Corey Stoll. In the pantheon of good casting this year, Driven is the one to beat. A few hard-working, excellent, character actors can elevate even the most cliche material and Driven is one such case.
Driven follows the true story of Jim Hoffman (Jason Sudekis) who through a series of unfortunate events ended up as an informant for the F.B.I, a close confidant of John Delorean (Lee Pace) as the Delorean brand flamed out, and a major witness in the case against Delorean. There’s parties, sex, drugs, marital problems, male angst, bromance and lots of 80’s fashion.

Jaime Dornan, Christian Slater and Alex Baldwin have all jumped on new TV series ‘Dr Death’. The series has yet to find a home at a network or streaming service.

But patients entered his operating room for complex but routine spinal surgeries were left permanently maimed or dead. As victims piled up, two fellow surgeons and a young Assistant District Attorney set out to stop him.
Baldwin will play neurosurgeon Robert Henderson. described as quiet, deliberative and methodical, Robert believes wholeheartedly both in the system in which he rose through the ranks and that anything worth doing shouldn’t be rushed.

There is a wonderful moment in Driven, the story of controversial carmaker John DeLorean’s headline-grabbing 1980s rise and fall, that encapsulates the film’s melding of comedy, tension, and history. A series of misfortunes have brought together DeLorean (Lee Pace)–the designer of the iconic car that Marty McFly would eventually use to travel through time–and a delightfully mustached moron and FBI informant, Jim Hoffman (Jason Sudeikis). A plan has been hatched to ensnare the unsuspecting DeLorean in a drug deal. But it cannot move forward unless DeLorean has the money to make it happen.
Hoffman is frantic, as well he should be. Earlier in the film, the husband and father was arrested for piloting a plane filled with cocaine. A federal agent (an ever-irritated Corey Stoll) offers Hoffman a chance to avoid decades of jail time in exchange for the life of an informant. Without telling his...

Maker of idiosyncratic documentary films including Dont Look Back, about Bob Dylan’s 1965 UK tour
The history of documentary film-making would look very different without Da Pennebaker, who has died aged 94. Though best known for his revelatory film Dont Look Back, about Bob Dylan’s 1965 UK tour, Pennebaker made bold and idiosyncratic films across a broad range of subject matter, from White House politics, showbusiness and the car-maker John DeLorean to global energy supplies and a competition among elite French pastry chefs. He was also a pioneer of portable cameras that could record sound synchronised with images, a technical leap that revolutionised documentary-making and inspired the “direct cinema” movement of the late 1950s.
Dont Look Back stands as one of the most memorable and influential films of its era, as both a musical and social document. “Dylan suddenly turned pop music upside down,” Pennebaker said. “He did it in a funny,...

Lee Pace didn’t know much about John DeLorean when he signed on to play the late automobile mogul in the new biopic “Driven.” He was aware of the DeLorean car that was immortalized in “Back to the Future” and, he says, “I had a sense of a scandal.”
That scandal was DeLorean’s downfall in the 1980s when he was charged by the FBI with brokering a deal, with the help of friend-turned-informant Jim Hoffman (played by Jason Sudeikis), to distribute $24 million worth of cocaine to try and save his flailing DeLorean Motor Company. Despite being acquitted after his legal team argued he was illegally entrapped by FBI and Hoffman, he never regained his footing.
“Who knows actually what really happened?” Pace said. “Whoever knows what actually happens in these things? You understand the version that is agreed upon at the end of it, but who knows what happens...

Even though the new biopic “Driven” chronicles the worst chapter of John DeLorean’s life, director Nick Hamm believes the engineering prodigy turned disgraced automobile magnate would be delighted with the film.

Playing the fallen car entrepreneur John DeLorean, skewering Donald Trump on SNL, Woody Allen, #MeToo … Why is it so hard to pin the actor down on anything?
A conversation with Alec Baldwin feels rather like being in a holding pattern above New York. Not that it’s boring: on the contrary, talking with this old-fashioned film star and modern-day sitcom god, this part-time Trump antagonist and full-time schmoozy showbiz personality, is an entirely pleasant experience. Chicago – The story of auto impresario John DeLorean is definitely one of truth is stranger than fiction, but also has a basis in “what ifs?” The fascinating new documentary of his life tells that story, breaking down the vagueness of how a former General Motors superstar got involved in a drug deal to save his own car company. As always, a situation like that has more loopholes.

Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for a new film called Driven, which tells a fictional account of the story of infamous businessman and automaker John DeLorean, who is played by Lee Pace.
The movie is described as a "fast-paced, comedic crime thriller of a bromance gone wrong” between John DeLorean and FBI informant Jim Hoffman, who is fantastically played by Jason Sudeikis. Driven, a dramedy with Jason Sudeikis and Lee Pace, reveals the origins of the DeLorean car... and why they stopped making it.
How fitting that the new Driven trailer should drop on July 3 of this year. It is, after all, the 34th anniversary of Back to the Future, one of the seminal touchstones of the 1980s and a movie that is impossible to imagine today without its futuristic vision of the Dmc DeLorean. With its stainless steel body and color, engine in the back, and batwing doors that open like a spaceship, the thing looked like it was out of a science fiction movie even before Doc Brown turned this sucker nuclear. It also has one of the most curious (and tragic) origin stories in automobiles, as it was the albatross that destroyed John DeLorean’s attempt at a new luxury car manufacturer. Hence where Driven with Jason Sudeikis,...

"You're moments away from being a very rich man." Universal has revealed the first official trailer for an indie drama titled Driven, a fictional telling of the tumultuous story of infamous businessman & automaker John DeLorean, played in this film by Lee Pace. This originally premiered at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals last fall, and arrives in a few theaters & VOD next month. Described as a "fast-paced, comedic crime thriller of a bromance gone wrong between John DeLorean, played by Lee Pace, and Jim Hoffman, played by Jason Sudeikis." The cast also includes Judy Greer, Isabel Arraiza, Corey Stoll, Justin Bartha, Michael Cudlitz, Tara Summers, and Iddo Goldberg. This isn't the only DeLorean film we've seen recently - there's the half-doc Framing John DeLorean starring Alec Baldwin as John. This one looks a bit better, though obviously more dramatic and wacky but still compelling and a lot of bit crazy.

Cannes opener The Dead Don’t Die from Jim Jarmusch bowed in fairly wide 613 theaters Fathers Day weekend, featuring a pack of big named stars turned zombie. The title sauntered to a $2.35M gross in 613 theaters for a $3,827 per theater average.
This is a back to back Cannes opening release for Focus. The company launched the festival’s 2018 starter, Everybody Knows starring Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz, which had a comparatively higher PTA in its first weekend, albeit in far fewer theaters. The drama grossed over $71K in just four locations, averaging $17,802. Everybody Knows was in fewer than half of The Dead Don’t Die’s location count at its peak. Everybody Knows eventually cumed $2.66M domestically.
The Dead Don’t Die is Jarmusch’s widest opener. Noted Focus president of Distribution when reporting numbers Sunday: “We’re thrilled to see Jim’s biggest opening and his top grossing weekend ever with this film.

Did some of this week's trailer offerings pass you by?
Each week usually brings a fresh batch of trailers designed to lure us into coughing up a bit of cash to see some forthcoming attractions. Sometimes they do the job quite nicely, and for sure there's nothing quite as exciting as a film that comes out of nowhere with a brilliant trailer that takes you from "ehh" to "okay, I'm in" in less than three minutes.
We have to admit, sometimes we miss those old school trailers with the gravelly voiceovers. "It Was A Time Of War" that sort of thing. The ones that didn't seem to show you half the movie. A whole lot of trailers nowadays seem to be cut the same way, too - if you notice that obligatory bass drop once, you'll probably notice it forever - but we still eat them up regardless.
