Warning: contains spoilers for Doctor Who episode “73 Yards”.
When Doctor Who writer Russell T Davies delivers an episode like “73 Yards”, the temptation to pin it down is tough to resist. It’s hard not to want diagrams, flow-charts and footnoted explanations of every slippery element. It’s worth resisting that urge though, because this episode was designed to evade simple answers. No amount of close-reading will reveal its definitive truth.
That’s a deliberate choice, let’s be clear. If Davies had wanted to pin a single interpretation on this strange, melancholic tale, then he’d have done it. That big brain would easily have invented a sci-fi or folkloric precedent for the phenomenon Ruby experiences, in which she’s followed at a precise distance by an always-out-of-reach figure who makes anybody who approaches her run screaming away from Ruby forever. Davies would have conjured up a fictional fix for...

Australian police said on Thursday that they had arrested Orpheus Pledger, an actor known for his role on long-running soap “Home and Away.” His failure to appear in court on Tuesday led to the issue of an arrest warrant and a public call for help.
Variety has reached out to Pledger’s agent Craig McMahon for comment.
Pledger appeared in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday, charged with four counts of assault. He was released on bail on condition that he return the following day. He is reported to have absconded during a court-ordered medical assessment on Monday evening. Local media describe the assessment as “involuntary mental health care.”
Melbourne Police appealed to the public for help in locating him on Wednesday, saying that Pledger was known to frequent inner Melbourne’s Northcote district.
The circumstances and location of his arrest have not been elaborated on by Victoria Police. Pledger is...

In Alice Rohrwacher’s La Chimera, the Italian writer-director’s fourth narrative feature film, the past melds with the present. Art is something to be dug up, to be discovered, regardless of its origins. A circus troupe does the digging, led by a quiet, discomforted British man named Arthur (Josh O’Connor), clad in his version of very penetrable armor, an all-white, stained suit. Arthur drifts back into town after a stint in prison, revisiting the home of his love, Beniamina (Yile Yara Vianello), who’s ever-present despite her lack of tangibility.
The art Arthur finds, via magic that has become a throughline in Rohrwacher’s work, fills him with despair and almost-bare riches. Who deserves to see the art buried with the dead? Rohrwacher meditates on Arthur and his troupe’s way of life, on the grasping at something physical, grasping at something to desperately hold onto. La Chimera can slip through one’s fingers.

Characters on Days of our Lives have gone up against villains like Stefano Dimera, Orpheus, and Emma Donovan, to name but three. Now, eight actors from the Peacock soap opera are taking on someone potentially even more powerful – or at least more caustic. They’re competing on Weakest Link, hosted by Jane Lynch, who brings a mix of her own persona, Sue Sylvester (Glee) and Dr. Linda Freeman (Two and a Half Men) to her role as the host of the NBC prime time game show. TV Insider was invited to the show’s taping, and we hung out a bit backstage with the Days actors to get their thoughts on competing against each other. Ahead of Weakest Link‘s return on April 2 (followed by Password), read on to get some insights from cast members Lindsay Arnold (ex-Allie), Bryan Dattilo (Lucas), Galen Gering (Rafe), Tina Huang (Melinda), Victoria Konefal (ex-...

La chimera.Around 1655, a group of rural laborers were excavating a field in Norfolk, England, when they dug up a collection of ancient urns, small clay vessels filled with ashes, bones, and various grave goods: combs, tweezers, brass plates, and a blue opal, possibly once set into a ring. More than a thousand years before, this field had served as a cemetery, and if not for an agricultural accident, it would have remained unknown. The find so impressed the scholar, doctor, and writer Sir Thomas Browne that he began his 1658 Urne-Buriall with the following: “Nature hath furnished one part of the Earth, and man another. The treasures of time lie high, in Urnes, Coynes, and Monuments, scarce below the roots of some vegetables.” He marveled at the survival of these fragile vessels, which, though “in a yard underground, and thin walls of clay, [have] out-worn all the strong and specious buildings above it,...

The Passionate Thief: Rohrwacher Finds Treasures Under the Tuscan Sun
“The sun is following us,” whispers a willowy blonde in the enigmatic opening moments of Alice Rohrwacher’s fourth feature, La Chimera, the title a reference to the fire-breathing hybrid monster from Greek mythology. Set in 1980s Tuscany, an English aracheolgist-cum-graverobber chases artifacts from the past while mourning the disappearance of his lover, not realizing he’s chasing her right down into Hades like the fated Orpheus. Starcrossed lovers have been popular since Shakespeare's day, and Days of Our Lives offers many.
They even had Ben and Ciara play Romeo and Juliet once (something most fans would like to forget!) Now, it's Tate and Holly's turn, and fortunately, it'll be the usual soap opera trope and not another re-rendition of the play.
According to spoilers for Days of Our Lives during the week of 3-11-24, Tate'll sneak into Holly's room... and as you might guess, Ej isn't too happy about it.
Tate's determined to get Holly to remember that he didn't give her the drugs.
He refused to take a guilty plea and is supposed to be in a halfway house while he awaits trial -- does he escape to talk to Holly in person?
That would be a terrible idea.
But fictional teenagers are prone to stupid, life-changing decisions, especially on soap operas. (See also...

Defending Your Life: Bham’s Captivating Quest Follows Its Own Path
The journey is the destination in Nepalese director Min Bahadur Bam’s graceful sophomore film, Shambhala, a simple narrative about complex reckonings. The title is a name derived from Sanskrit, meaning a harmonious or tranquil place. In the context of Bam’s film, it refers both to a desired utopic afterlife as well as one’s own hearth and home, both spheres interrupted by an incident inspiring harmful village gossip. The scope of the quest centers on a quietly resilient woman named Pema, who embarks on the kind of journey which also echoes mythological strife, such as the tragedy of Orpheus and Eurydice.…...

Singer-songwriter Ani Difranco will make her Broadway debut as ‘Persephone’ in the hit musical Hadestown, performing the role she originated on the 2010 studio-concept album by composer Anaïs Mitchell.
Difranco will begin performances at the Walter Kerr Theatre on February 9, 2024. The announcement was made today by producers Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold, and Tom Kirdahy.
Difranco’s history with Hadestown began when she invited Mitchell to release the original studio album of Hadestown on Difranco’s label Righteous Babe Records. “I could not be more thrilled to be joining the cast of Hadestown,” Difranco said in a statement. “It’s like I get to rewind to my New York youth and follow the road not taken.”

Salem's in for yet another shock.
Days of Our Lives spoilers for the week of 10-16-23 suggest several surprises in store: two returns, one person mysteriously pulling away from his partner... and a surprising person seeking a divorce.
Let's hope that's a pipe dream (or someone's absurd fantasy).
First, the big casting news: Clyde and Lucas are back, at least for a while.
Only in Salem would the guards deal with Orpheus trying to negatively influence Lucas by rooming him with Clyde instead. But according to the spoiler video, Chad has to warn Lucas not to trust the drug-dealing villain with the Southern drawl.
There's no reason for Lucas to give Clyde the time of day. Didn't things get ugly between Clyde and Kate back in the day?
If anything, Lucas should want revenge since Clyde messed with his mother. So, how did these two become so friendly...

Changes are coming to the Greek underworld — at least as it appears on Broadway. Australian pop musician Betty Who and Tony nominee Phillip Boykin are set to take over the leading roles of Persephone and Hades, respectively, in the hit musical, Hadestown, starting Sept. 5.

Premiering at the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes, Faris Alrjoob’s The Red Sea Makes Me Wanna Cry is a tale filled with shimmering mysteries, utilising elliptical storytelling, enigmatic voiceover and a strong command of camera movement and tone to suggest multiple hidden meanings lingering in the background. His thesis film at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne, The Red Sea Makes Me Wanna Cry sees the Jordanian filmmaker travel to Aqaba – a tourist hotspot situated between Israel and Saudi Arabia – making excellent use of location to suggest an almost dystopian, forgotten world, imbuing our protagonist’s journey to learn more about her long-lost lover with a keenly felt sense of time and place. We had the chance to talk to Alrjoob ahead of the film’s world premiere yesterday about shooting on Super 16, the benefits of a 1:66:1 frame and how his lead actress, Clara Schwinning, is like a young Tilda Swinton.

Marlena is the type of character viewers either love or hate.
She's revered by many in Salem but can also be arrogant or judgmental, and she holds the record for damsel-in-distress stories.
In honor of Deidre Hall reaching her 5000th episode, Days of Our Lives during the week of 5-10-23 offered a tribute to Marlena with flashbacks and conversations with John. It was a nice gift for her and her fans, though it could have used more emphasis on the past.
John wasn't around for Marlena's entire run, but Days of Our Lives got around that by having him take her out to dinner to celebrate having seen approximately 5000 patients.
During that dinner, the couple hit a few of Marlena's highlights. The ones they chose were appropriate, but I wanted more!

She's revered by many in Salem but can also be arrogant or judgmental, and she holds the record for damsel-in-distress stories.

Billed as a “twisted horror,” the pic is set in 1910 Indiana and follows the patriarch of a rural mercantile family (Sarsgaard) whose way of life is suddenly disrupted by a charismatic industrialist who has entered into a secret affair with his wife (Davis). When rising...

Pulsar Content has acquired “Niki,” a film about the famous French-American artist Niki de Saint-Phalle, for international sales. The Paris-based banner will introduce the period project to buyers at the Cannes market with exclusive first stills.
“Niki” marks the feature debut of popular French actor Céline Sallette and stars Charlotte Le Bon (“The Walk” “Saint-Laurent”) as de Saint-Phalle.
Le Bon recently made her feature debut with “Falcon Lake” — which bowed at Cannes last year — and previously starred in Robert Zemeckis’s “The Walk,” as well as Terry George’s “The Promise” and Jalil Lespert’s “Saint-Laurent.” Le Bon stars in “Niki” opposite Damien Bonnard (“Les Misérables“).
The movie will portray Saint-Phalle from the age of 23, when she’s still a model and an aspiring actor who is married and has a two-year-old daughter, Laura. Together, they flee the U.S. during the oppressive McCarthy era and come to France, where they experience a short-lived euphoria.

Fighting Olympus opens on Biddle’s (Devinair Mathis) last day as a member of the Swat team. On the way to his final assignment, he asks his brother Rucker (Leslie A. Jones) to join him in retirement. He says he can’t, somebody has to offset all the corrupt cops in the department. “What are you, the black Captain America?” Actually, it’s Biddle whose path seems to resemble that of The Original Avenger. He’s trading in his badge to work outside of the system with Ayasha (Anaya T. Kaur), a reporter who takes on important and potentially dangerous stories. Unfortunately, something goes wrong and they’re seemingly killed pursuing a story.

Regé-Jean Page’s paladin Xenk is an earnest member of the core heroes who make up Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Best known for his role as the romantic lead in the first season of Bridgerton, Page is no stranger to working in fantasy, having voiced Orpheus in the podcast series of The Sandman. He took a moment to speak with Den of Geek about the virtues of wearing a cape—but wouldn’t spill any secrets about Xenk’s sword.
Den of Geek: You play Xenk, a paladin who is a bit of a stick in the mud. What can you tell us about your character?
Regé-Jean Page: I don’t think he’d describe himself as a stick in the mud. I think his extended action sequences would also beg to differ. He’s not necessarily no fun. He...

This article contains massive spoilers for "John Wick: Chapter 4."
There's an ancient saying: "Before you set out on revenge, first dig two graves." The axiom has been attributed to everyone from Confucius to James Bond, but while its origins are indeterminate, its sentiment is evergreen. Revenge is a deadly business that will likely consume the soul — if not the life — of anyone who seeks it.
John Wick (played with brooding soulfulness by Keanu Reeves) can attest to the truth of that saying, as can many of his friends and enemies. In the latest installment of his saga, "John Wick: Chapter 4," the daughter of Wick's friend Shimazu (Hiroyuki Sanada), Akira (Rina Sawayama), observes that "everything he touches, dies." Another of Wick's on-again, off-again allies, Winston (Ian McShane) pleads with John to know where his roaring rampage of revenge will end. John himself, as ever, isn't sure of the particulars.

Kaos has been a long-time coming. Netflix first announced it had commissioned this British dark comedy reimagining Greek mythology back in 2018, but the pandemic meant that filming only started last year, and there’s already been one major cast replacement.
And even though we’re no closer to an official release date, the impressive cast list, unique premise and solid production team make Kaos well worthy of your attention.
‘Nothing Is Sacred’ in This Bold Take On Greek Myth
Set over eight one-hour episodes, Kaos is a contemporary reimagining of Greek Mythology exploring themes of gender politics, power, and life in the underworld. The official synopsis describes how six humans will discover they’re part of an ancient prophecy:
“Zeus has a wrinkle. He’s worried it might mean the end of the world and it might. Because on Earth, six humans unaware of their importance or their connection to...

If you hoped the whole Heaven/Hell story was a dream, you might get your wish.
According to a cryptic new spoiler video, for Days of Our Lives during the week of 2-20-23, Kate, Kayla, and Marlena are locked in cryogenic chambers.
The transparent pods resemble the one Megan Hathaway held Bo in during Beyond Salem 2. Does this mean she's had them all along, and this afterlife nonsense is a Rolf-induced hallucination?
Something like this was bound to happen sooner or later. This is Salem, after all, when people come back from the dead with alarming frequency.
There was no way that the three leading ladies would stay permanently deceased. Still, this idea leaves more questions than answers. For one thing, Kate was cremated, so whose ashes are in that urn if she's in a cryogenic chamber?
View Slideshow: Days of Our Lives: 13 Things That Only Happen in Salem
Days will probably explain that.

Will Marlena make it out of Hell? Is Orpheus headed there soon?
Our TV Fanatics, Jack and Christine, are joined by Mikey from MyHourglass, a Days of Our Lives fan forum, to debate if Orpheus can avoid being killed, whether the women will make it out of Hell, and their reaction to Allie and Sonny leaving Salem.
And read on to find out which legacy character they want back the most!
Orpheus claims that someone else is responsible for the deaths of Kate, Kayla, and Marlena. Who do you think he means?
Mikey: I assume he's referring to the person who stole the orchid, ultimately being responsible for the three women's deaths. In light of casting spoilers, I have an idea of who that might be and how it could segue into an upcoming story.
And let's be real -- he Is still responsible for this. The fact that they...

Are you ready to Party Down? Starz sure hopes so, as after over a decade, the series makes a (hopefully triumphant) return.

I'm also sharing some personal favorites with you. My love for Nordic entertainment led me to Lykkeland -- State of Happiness on Topic, and Viaplay US finally premieres this week with a lot more Scandanavian content for those who enjoy it. See all of that and more below.

Three women's souls hung in the balance, but viewers were the ones being tormented.
The afterlife plot gets sillier every week, and on Days of Our Lives during the week of 2-13-23 it jumped the shark -- again.
Bizarre plots have always been part of this soap, but can we agree that this one has gone way too far?
Trying to make sense of the antics up in Heaven gives me a headache.
It was cute when Bo watched his loved ones on a magic TV during Beyond Salem 2. But now Nick has a remote to turn off Kate's psychic connection with Roman and the Devil looks like Doug even though Doug is still alive. Can someone please make this nonsense stop?

Abigail's killer was found, and Ej shot him! Ej and Chad bonded over attempted murder. Gwen was run down in front of the police station. And Chloe insisted Brady was the love of her life.
Our TV Fanatics, Jack and Christine, are joined by Trey from MyHourglass, a Days of Our Lives fan forum, to rate the murder storyline, decide if Clyde should have died, and debate what Jack will do if Jennifer hit Gwen this week in Salem.
Now that we know who the killer is, rate Abigail's murder story from 1 (I hated it) to 10( It was one of the best storylines of the year)
Trey: I would honestly rate this story as a five. It had moments when it was interesting and intriguing and kept you guessing throughout.
However, I did not like that the writers took the easy way out and made the killer Clyde. It seemed anticlimactic.

In Christoph Willibald Gluck’s opera “Orpheus and Eurydice,” Orpheus must travel to the underworld to reunite with his dead wife, Eurydice. To do so, he must placate the Furies, the goddesses of vengeance, and hold onto his love for his wife.
German director Kilian Riedhof had the opera in mind when adapting Antoine Leiris’ autobiographical book “You Will Not Have My Hate.” The film world premieres on Aug. 12 in Piazza Grande at the Locarno Film Festival.
The book is based on Leiris’ experiences following the murder by Islamic State jihadists of his wife, Hélène Muyal-Leiris, on Nov. 13, 2015, at the Bataclan night-club — one of 130 people killed that evening in a string of terrorist attacks across Paris.
The film begins on that fateful day with Hélène preparing food for their toddler, Melvil, and the couple discussing a holiday in Corsica that they had to abandon so Hélène could pick up some freelance work.
