David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.
The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

Following a turbulent year marked by dueling industry strikes and the violent contraction–if not yet full pop–of the streaming bubble, 2024 has thus far been pretty good to Hollywood. It certainly helps that we’re in the middle of awards season, which for cineastes amounts to a three-month holiday largely characterized by voluminous binge-watching. And not just binge-watching of the year’s top films. For the curious, the season also offers up a smuggler’s bounty full of talking special post-screening Q&As, roundtables, filmmaker panels, celebratory cocktail receptions and more.
Traditionally Film Independent’s Directors Close-Up series has been a little bit of all of the above, presenting behind-the-scenes insight into the year’s most important works of cinema, straight from the mouths and brains of filmmakers themselves. After scoring big at such recent award shows as the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards, FX’s The Bear has continued down the path of awards glory, claiming six statuettes at the 2023 Primetime Emmys.
At the ceremony, held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Monday night, the beloved Chicago restaurant-world comedy scored the prizes for Outstanding Comedy Series, Comedy Actor (Jeremy Allen White), Comedy Supporting Actress (Ayo Edebiri) and Comedy Supporting Actor (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), as well as the awards for Comedy Writing and Directing. With creator Christopher Storer, the recipient of the latter two awards, absent from tonight’s ceremony, EP-actor (and real-world chef) Matty Matheson stepped up to accept the Comedy Series prize on behalf of the team.
“What’s good? I just want to thank restaurants as a whole, hospitality as a whole,” said Matheson, before being kissed passionately on the mouth by excited co-star Moss-Bachrach.

The intent of THR‘s annual list of the 50 Most Powerful Showrunners is to provide an accurate state of the TV union — a rundown of the writer-producers selling in an increasingly fraught media climate, making culturally relevant and awards-friendly shows and serving the masses at a time when consensus entertainment has all but vanished. It’s also a great opportunity to pick some brains.
Those showrunners who made the 2023 list were polled on a variety of subjects. If Suits can become a streaming hit years after ending, what other shows deserve a similar fate? What IP are they dying to get their hands on? What’s already a pressing issue for the next WGA contract negotiation with the studios? And if they found themselves with a burner social media account, what would they do with it?
Here are some of the best answers to those and more questions.

HBO’s Succession and FX’s The Bear earned top honors at the 39th annual Television Critics Association’s annual awards, the organization announced Monday.
Rather than being presented in the closing weekend at the semi-annual press tour, the awards were released online after the summer session was canceled as a result of Hollywood’s labor battles.
HBO’s Succession earned the biggest award — the prestigious program of the year prize — and took home its third overall achievement in drama after previously winning in the category in 2022 and 2020. FX’s The Bear sizzled with wins for outstanding new program and took home the award for achievement in comedy.
Both Succession and The Bear were the only shows with multiple wins this year, helping HBO and FX tie for the lead with Disney+ and Netflix, who each had two wins apiece.

A potential actors strike may be looming, but the 75th Primetime Emmys looks full-steam ahead, for now.
Announcing the nominations today at the historic Hollywood Athletic Club, Yvette Nicole Brown and TV Academy boss Frank Scherma read out some familiar and once again strongly tipped names including Succession, The Bear, Abbott Elementary, Ted Lasso and The White Lotus. However, it was the names and shows the past Emmy nominee and the RadicalMedia co-founder did not utter that left some hopefuls with a bad taste in their mouths this morning.
Noting that they hoped the “ongoing guild negotiations can come to equitable and swift end,” the duo did not mention the work of a Dame of the realm, a real prince, a big-screen legend or, yet again, Yellowstone.
