The only goal came on just before the half hour, Oscar bending a free kick from 22 yards out into the far left corner after a foul on Samuel Eto’o by Erik Pieters, as Chelsea beat Stoke by a single goal at Stamford Bridge.
The first half started at a fast tempo, and both sides had a good chance to open the score. Inside the first six minutes Samuel Eto’o received the ball with his back to goal inside of the box, turned and fired inches wide of the far post, then peter Crouch headed wide from four yards after Simon Walters cross was deflected.
The game began to settle as both sides struggled for momentum, but that changed when Oscar showed his dead ball prowess. In the final five minutes of the half the game really opened, Frank Lampard coming so close to tapping...

Stoke City won their last meeting with Chelsea in December, but it was their first victory in 13 attempts. In among those encounters were ten Blues wins, including a 7-0 and 4-0.
Mark Hughes thus achieved something predecessor Tony Pulis never did by beating his former club. Now the Potters travel to Stamford Bridge in the last tie of Fa Cup fourth round weekend. Stoke reached the final in 2011, but were runners-up to Manchester City.
No team in England has dominated this competition like Chelsea in recent years. They have featured in four of the last seven Fa Cup finals, winning all of them. The first of those came in 2007 during Jose Mourinho’s first spell as Blues boss.
The Potters have lost four of their last six matches, but their single recent win came in the cup when they knocked Championship leaders Leicester City out in the last round.

Liverpool finally recorded a Premier League win at Stoke City thanks to an own goal, Steven Gerrard’s penalty, a Luis Suarez brace and Daniel Sturridge scoring late on.
The visitors had never tasted victory at the Britannia, but got it here despite being pegged back to 2-2 at half time after leading 2-0. Peter Crouch and Charlie Adam came back to haunt their old club, restoring the Potters’ parity following early defensive errors which Aly Cissokho and Suarez profited from.
Raheem Sterling then won a soft penalty, however, and the returning Sturridge set Suarez up for a second. Jon Walters set up a grandstand finish, but Mark Hughes and his team went down 5-3 as Sturridge sunk Stoke at the death.
Brendan Rodgers’s Reds went ahead inside five minutes in fortuitous fashion. Cissokho saw his speculative effort take a massive deflection off home captain...

Liverpool travel to Stoke City on Sunday searching for their first league win in the Potteries for 30 years.
The Reds have recorded victories in other domestic competitions, including coming from behind courtesy of Luis Suarez’s brace in October 2011 en route to winning the League Cup.
Stoke have won each of their last three home Premier League matches with Liverpool and unbeaten at the Britannia in this fixture since returning to the top flight. Mark Hughes’s men are also unbeaten in their last seven on their own turf.
Brendan Rodgers’s improving Reds suffered a setback in their mission to deliver Champions League football with successive defeats between Christmas and New Year to Manchester City and Chelsea. The Potters found little cheer over the festive period either, picking up just one point from nine available.

Ashley Young scored his first club goal since May 2012 as Manchester United survived stormy weather to win at Stoke City in the Capital One Cup quarter-finals. David Moyes’s Red Devils edged a match of few chances with captain Patrice Evra also on target.
Young fired wide into the side-netting for United as hosts Stoke survived an early scare. Anderson then worked Thomas Sorensen in the home goal with a low effort midway through the first half.
Referee Mark Clattenburg briefly brought the players off amid a hailstorm. The delay lasted about eight minutes. Just before half time both Red Devils centre backs almost combined for a corner when Chris Smalling nodded across to the unsuspecting Jonny Evans.
Just after the hour the visitors went ahead as Young emphatically ended his goal drought, smashing home after a one-two with sub Javier Hernandez. Evans then looped a header...

There wasn’t much to inspire either set of spectators in this drab draw in Cardiff’s Millenium Stadium on Wednesday night, as Wales and the Republic of Ireland played out a 0-0 scoreline.
The best of the chances fell to West Brom striker Shane Long, who had 2 good chances either side of the break. Paddy Madden and Robbie Brady also had good chances for the visitors, who dominated a dreadful match. Neither side managed a shot on target in the first half; the first save of the game was made by Sunderland keeper Kieran Westwood; diving to smother a Craig Bellamy free-kick.
Wales looked frankly toothless without the talismanic Gareth Bale, who watched from the sidelines, and will not relish their final qualifying games, unless they can seriously improve their form. Ireland were on top for much of the second half, and their inability to take chances will worry their Italian manager Giovanni Trappatoni.

After Chelsea’s victory from the claws of defeat at Villa Park yesterday, it now looks like it’ll be a fight to the death between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal for the final Champions League slot. The Gunners are favourites with the extra point and in reality, two extra points, given the their vastly superior goal difference over their North London rivals, but Spurs will be hoping to push it all the way to the final day of the season with a victory in front of the Sky Cameras at the Britannia Stadium today.

Queens Park Rangers will once again be without Bobby Zamora for this weekend’s visit of Stoke, with the striker serving the second of his three-match suspension.
Loic Remy is likely therefore to continue his role as a lone-forward although Harry Redknapp could opt to pair him in attack with Jay Bothroyd if he goes for a 4-4-2 formation.
Left-back Armand Traore is pushing for contention having recovered from a calf problem.
Stoke look as though they will once more be without winger Matthew Etherington, with the 31-year old still struggling with the back injury that ruled him out of the 2-0 defeat to Manchester United.
Marc Wilson could return, however, while manager Tony Pulis remains hopeful “one or two players with niggles” will be fit.

Team news ahead of Stoke City’s make or break Europa League second leg match against Valencia at the Estadi de Mestalla. Kick-off for this evening’s match has an earlier time of 7pm and is screened live on Espn television in the UK.
Stoke travel to Valencia trying to overcome a 1-0 deficit but do know that all goals they score tonight will be away ones.
Stoke manager Tony Pulis will be missing a number of first team players for tonight’s game with Dean Whitehead, Ryan Shawcross, Jon Waters, Matthew Etherington, Marc Wilson, Glenn Whelan and Peter Crouch not traveling to Spain. Pulis has revealed both injury and fatigue from their large amount of games they have played recently has forced him to leave some players back home.
In fact Pulis has only taken 15 players to travel with him to Spain, leaving only three outfield players on the bench.

Stoke lost 5-0 last time out to Bolton, Owen Coyle described Wanderers’ victory as “revenge” after Pulis’ side beat Bolton 5-0 in the Fa Cup semi final last year. The Potters have lost their last three matches and conceded eight goals in their last two fixtures which is very unlike Stoke. They are on a bad run and coach Tony Pulis knows he needs a win soon as he said “We know we are on a bad run of form. We are playing well but just not finishing our chances. It’s a huge transition as we are now playing in Europe and are a established Premiership team. A win and it’ll all be ok again.” This is a game where Stoke should be realistically looking to win, especially as they are on home turf and very dangerous at the Britannia Stadium.

When Bolton manager Owen Coyle takes a look at the statistics for why his club are struggling second bottom at the foot of the Premier League there will be one worrying conclusion he will come too. His Bolton side can’t win at home, and if you can’t win your home games in this league, it’s generally 18th or below where you end up come May.
So far this season they have played five games at home, failing to get a point against Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea (no shame there) but not only did they fail to beat Norwich City and Sunderland, they were also overturned by those sides as well. In their last home game a down on their luck Sunderland comfortably beat a negative Bolton side 2-0 and it’s been misery upon misery for the Wanderers fans to pay for the privilege of watching.

The one song that Steve Bruce probably wouldn’t appreciate hearing on the radio driving through to work for today’s 3pm Premier League tie against Stoke at The Stadium of Light would be David Bowie’s “Under Pressure”. Though in truth, the track would be apt and there’s already some predicting he might be the first manager to get the chop this season if he doesn’t have a good run of games between now and Halloween.
His side’s fall from grace has been well documented. Sunderland were pushing for a European spot back in January but the departure of star striker Darren Bent, a lengthy injury period for Danny Welbeck and the failure to replace either of them coincided with a freefall the likes of which England’s Premier division has rarely seen, earning just 12 points from a possible 54 on offer… just 3 wins in 18 attempts. A lot can change in the space of a year, as anyone connected to Liverpool Football Club will know all too well. With new owners, changes in management, signings and departures, there has been dramatic and much needed change at the club.
Going into their fourth Premier League fixture this time last season, Liverpool had started bleakly, managing a point in their opening fixture at home to Arsenal, letting the three points slip from their grasps when Pepe Reina fumbled the ball into his own net on the 90 minute mark, a sign of things to come.

Chelsea failed to win their opening day fixture for the first time in nine years as new manager André Villas-Boas was unsuccessful in inspiring a convincing performance in his ageing squad, despite quite a few good chances.
There were positives for both managers however, Chelsea fans will be heartened with the performance of Fernando Torres who was tireless throughout and looked dangerous at all times. Stoke manager Tony Pulis too can be happy with a good point for his hard-working side against difficult opposition. Ultimately, it was The Potters’ physical style of play that foiled Chelsea whose passing game although evident in places was ultimately stifled.
