Right now, when audiences hear about an upcoming live-action adaptation, they automatically assume it will be bad. After the fiasco of The Cats movie and a whole slew of questionable Netflix series based on famous anime, people are wary of any other attempt.

An alpha male human trafficker, who possesses the worst qualities a man could have. It’d seem Byron Stallings could be Andrew Tate 2.0 if only he started a podcast of his own. In Apple TV’s Sugar, Stallings is one of the bad guys who’s involved with Olivia’s disappearance. We’re first introduced to this gang leader when he comes looking for his confidant, Clifford Carter. Stallings is your usual crook who accidentally made it big in the crime world, and it’s evident from his actions. He’s mostly driven by his raging bull-like instincts, and even though he tries to act smart, you know that his bald head only stores two functional brain cells.

This article contains major spoilers for Sugar episode 6.
Virtually every “spoiler-free” Sugar review that ran in advance of the Colin Farrell-starring detective series’ premiere on Apple TV+ mentioned that the project featured a big twist. While one might consider it poor taste to “spoil” that a story even contains an enormous twist, it’s hard to blame the reviewers on this one.
The twist at the center of Sugar is so wild, so out-of-left-field, and so paradigm-shifting, that it’s almost impossible not to acknowledge. It would be like trying to write about Clifford the Big Red Dog while avoiding the fact that it contains a big red dog. The problem with letting the audience know that a big twist was coming, however, is that it took forever for the show to reveal it. Four whole weeks after the two-part April 5 premiere, in fact!

Ruby’s still against John taking on this case, and John doesn’t know why. He admits to himself that it might be because of his shaking hand and bad dreams. However, he continues to tell himself he’s fine.

Scholastic Entertainment has unveiled a deal to invest $186 million in the Canadian animation studio 9 Story Media Group.
A definitive agreement between the two companies would see Scholastic — whose Hollywood projects include Sony’s Goosebumps movies and the live-action/animation hybrid adaptation of Clifford the Big Red Dog for Paramount — acquire 100 percent of the economic interests and a minority of voting rights in Toronto-based 9 Story.
The transaction, already approved by 9 Story shareholders and board members, is expected to close in Scholastic’s fiscal quarter beginning June 1, 2024.
Vince Commisso, president and CEO of 9 Story, said in a statement on Tuesday: “We’ve been fortunate to work with Scholastic for decades, going back to my own start with the family-favorite production, The Magic School Bus. Starz is heading down south with Uncle Clifford.
The Lionsgate-backed premium cable network has ordered Down in the Valley, a half-hour docuseries exploring the Deep South with P-Valley star Nicco Annan set to host. The six-episode series will launch at a date to be determined this year and explore the people, music, culture and stories of the South, per Starz, as the show will feature everything from strip clubs to sex workshops, rap performances and ancient hoodoo rituals.
The order for Down in the Valley arrives as P-Valley — from creator Katori Hall — has been off the air for nearly two years. Sources say production on P-Valley is expected to resume later this year, though the show is not expected to air in 2024.
“P-Valley has authentically captured Southern Black culture in our fictional world of Chuccalisa and piqued the curiosity of our Pynk Posse to learn more,” said Kathryn Busby,...

Sterling K. Brown is no stranger when it comes to great material. Laugh all you want but the success of filmmaker Brett Michael Innes’ first foray into mockumentary territory with “Daryn’s Gym” is part of a growing South African slate flexing its muscles within a comedy genre no longer considered “too refined” for local audiences’ taste.
The Nostalgia Productions mockumentary feature – a David and Goliath battle between the hapless owner of a family gym squaring off against the ruthless owner of a multinational fitness center plotting a takeover – is included in the film lineup currently on show at the 5th Joburg Film Festival with Innes, who served as writer and director, attending.
Made for eVOD, the nascent streamer of the commercial South African broadcaster e.tv, Innes tells Variety that on a financing level “Daryn’s Gym” was “one of the easiest things to do” since the gym-set tale was a full commission from eVOD.

All heroes deserve an origin story. And all stuffed bears deserve a cultural resurgence. At long last, everyone's favorite honey-loving woodland creature will get both: Winnie the Pooh is returning to theaters in 2024 via a prequel film to A.A. Milne's classic book. The newest iteration of Pooh Bear and pals comes courtesy of Baboon Animation (the multi-Emmy winning studio behind "Angry Birds" and "Gigantosaurus") and Iqi Media, Inc.
DreamWorks alumnus Mike de Seve will direct, and co-write with fellow DreamWorks alum John Reynolds ("The Mr. Peabody & Sherman Show"). Yet another DreamWorks alum is getting in on the action too: Charlene Kelly ("Next Gen") will serve as executive producer. "A.A. Milne's bear has aged gracefully in the last hundred years," Kelly said, per the press release, before hinting at the premise of the upcoming film. "But what happened, back-when, that made him and his pals who they are in the book?...

When Ramin Bahrani came on board to direct “2nd Chance,” about Richard Davis, the project’s producers, Johnny Galvin and Daniel M. Turcan had a much different idea as to what it was going to be. “When I saw the material and the archives of Richard, they wanted to make a fiction film and I said that this is, to me, very interesting as a documentary. I had done two short docs but never a feature doc,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above).
Even with Davis already on board, Bahrani made sure to communicate to his son Matt about what he envisioned for the movie. “I let Matt know I am not coming there to make a vanity film about his father, but I’m also not coming there to do a takedown movie. I hoped his father would be truthful and honest and open about things.

“This role has allowed me to be more audacious and authentic,” declares Nicco Annan about playing Uncle Clifford on “P-Valley.” For our recent webchat he adds, “I’ve always been a person who has walked in my own truth. I never fit into the confines society gives me. This role is a space where you can spread your wings and do all things. Some people, because of their previous biases with Black characters and queer characters, can be very limited. Being able to play Uncle Clifford is something that allows me to flex, and allows all of those things to be gone. It’s like the phoenix.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Character actor Cliff Emmich, who played major roles in “Payday” and “Thunderbolt and Lightfoot” has died, his agent confirmed. He was 85.
Emmich’s rep and friend for over 50 years, Steve Stevens, tells TheWrap that the celebrity died Monday in Los Angeles following a long battle with lung cancer.
“He was a very special man and an underrated actor,” Stevens said. “He loved being a member in good standing of Screen Actors Guild and AFTRA and so very proud of his chosen profession. He loved being a cowboy and could ride a horse with the best of them. I’m sure Cliff would be embarrassed with all the attention he is now getting.”

Staying true to the D.H. Lawrence classic, theater actor Matthew Duckett, who has cerebral palsy, made his feature film debut with “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” — the first disabled actor to play the part of Clifford on a Netflix production. The film started to stream Dec. 2 on the platform.
“I’ve been in a great many productions where I’ve been allowed to live in my disability, which has been incredibly freeing as an actor,” Duckett said, describing the differing approaches to how productions address the accessibility needs of their actors. “But something I was really grateful to see happen was to have someone on-set dedicated to my needs as a disabled artist and to the honesty of the production of a disabled character.”

Cliff Emmich, the fun-loving character actor who made his mark in Payday, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, Halloween II and Little House on the Prairie, has died. He was 85.
Emmich died Monday at his Valley Village home in Los Angeles after a long battle with lung cancer, his rep Steve Stevens told The Hollywood Reporter.
In perhaps his most well-known role, Emmich played the driver Chicago, who steered the Cadillac sedan with Rip Torn‘s hard-living honky tonk singer Maury Dann in the backseat, in Payday (1973).
In Michael Cimino‘s Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974), Emmich portrayed the Western Union security guard with a porn fetish who is attracted to the long-legged, dress-wearing Jeff Bridges. He played another security guard, one who falls victim to a hammer wielded by Michael Myers, in Halloween II (1981).

This review originally ran September 2, 2022, in conjunction with the film’s world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival.
Because we are acutely aware of the un-bliss and infidelity to come, the starry-eyed wedding vows at the start of the latest “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” — premiering at the 2022 Telluride Film Festival — seem both aching and mischievous to us. Happily ever after? Not so fast.
But they certainly mean something sacred to Lady Constance Chatterley, played spiritedly by Emma Corrin (Princess Diana of “The Crown”) in a performance of feathery grace. With her young head in the clouds and heart fluttering with romance, completely unaware of the type of tale she’s leading, you can see in her glowingly lit face that she means every blissful word of her matrimonial pledge to Lord Clifford (Matthew Duckett), a square nobleman soon to be shipped back to the Great War. Her exuberance is matched only by Isabella Summers’ light-headed,...

Plot: Based on the classic D.H. Lawrence novel, a story well ahead of its time, we follow the life of Lady Chatterley, a woman born to a life of wealth and privilege, who soon finds herself married to a man that she eventually falls out of love with. Lady Chatterley engages in a torrid affair with a gamekeeper on their English estate, discovering more desire and intimacy than she thought possible. When she realizes that she has fallen heart and soul, she breaks all traditions of the day and seeks happiness with the man she loves.
Review: Whether you have read it or not, the reputation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover casts a huge shadow over the annals of literature. Written by D.H. Lawrence, Lady Chatterley’s Lover has been a commonly banned book due to its explicit sexual content, including some of the first uses of profane language in popular fiction.

Can a film with an entire scene of full-frontal frolicking in the rain still feel polite? Yes, as it turns out. Lady Chatterley’s Lover is the god tier in sexy literary classics, but the sexiest thing in Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre’s Netflix adaptation are the shots of the English countryside. That surely doesn’t feel right.
Emma Corrin plays posh, yearning Constance Chatterley; Jack O’Connell is Mellors, the gruff gamekeeper who catches her eye after her husband, the upper-class Sir Clifford, is maimed in battle. I so wanted to love this film. A literary period drama? Sexual tension across the class divide? The shadow of war? Wonderful actors? It must be nearly Christmas. But instead of crackling with electricity, it just hums like an energy-efficient light bulb.
Dh Lawrence’s now infamous 1928 novel is about the human spirit recovering from a cataclysmic war. “Ours is essentially a tragic age,...

Romantic and sexy, the latest adaptation of D.H Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover has Emma Corrin (The Crown) as the titular Lady and Jack O’Connell (Unbroken) as the Lady’s working-class lover, Oliver Mellors. Lawrence’s work, controversial in its time, has been adapted countless times over. Thanks to the sizzling chemistry between Corrin and O’Connell, director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre’s version is one of the best.
Screenwriter David Magee’s adaptation of Lawrence’s classic novel arrives on Netflix in 2022 as a luscious bodice ripper and rebuke of society’s expectations and restrictions within well-defined classes.

Kaiju never go out of style. From Godzilla to King Kong to Clifford the Big Red Dog, giant monster media is always close at hand to remind us all how we're only one bad experiment away from losing our top spot on the food chain. With that charming notion in mind, the latest entry into the creature catalog will be an adaptation of a familiar, scaly face. Netflix Japan officially announced via Twitter that its studio will helm "Gamera: Rebirth," an animated film starring the world's biggest turtle. The statement came packaged with what we can only describe as the shortest teaser trailer ever created.
There's not much to tell just yet, but we love talking almost as much as we love cryptids, and there's plenty to speculate about. Here's everything we know about Gamera's cinematic return, as well as a little background on the Og hero in a half...

Emma Corrin is courting scandal in the Netflix adaptation of the controversial novel “Lady Chatterley’s Lover.”
“The Crown” alum stars as the titular Lady Connie Chatterley, who embarks on an affair with gamekeeper Mellors (Jack O’Connell) while her ailing husband, Sir Clifford (Matthew Duckett), grows suspicious. Joely Richardson also stars as Sir Clifford Chatterley’s nurse. The film premieres in select theaters November 25 and will be streaming on Netflix December 2.
Based on D. H. Lawrence’s novel of the same name, the film is helmed by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre (“The Mustang”) and adapted for the screen by David Magee (“Life of Pi”). The novel was previously at the center of a history-making obscenity trial. The film was produced for Netflix by Sony’s 3000 Pictures.
“When I reread the novel, I thought it could have been written today,” director de Clermont-Tonnerre told Vogue. “It’s scary that not that much has changed since the ’20s.

The producers of P-Valley must be pretty confident about the renewal prospects for a third season on Starz.
What other explanation exists for all the cliffhangers on P-Valley Season 2 Episode 10?
Katori Hall leaving so much unresolved only reveals a lot of narratives still to be unveiled on this drama.
That's not to say that no storylines were sewn up. Well, sort of, anyway.
Most importantly, Ernestine survived the Rona and returned home as cantankerous as ever. That's not surprising. She's too good a character to kill off so predictably.
In a perfectly Ernestine move, she even arranged her welcome-home party, retaining Big L, Duffy, and the Ugandans to convert The Pynk into Ernestine's Juke Joint.
Sadly, we didn't get to hear Ernestine perform. But she was recovering from a severe respiratory illness, so that's understandable.
Do we mark Uncle Clifford and Lil Murda's relationship as resolved? As with any May-December romance,...

Sadly, we didn't get to hear Ernestine perform. But she was recovering from a severe respiratory illness, so that's understandable.
Do we mark Uncle Clifford and Lil Murda's relationship as resolved? As with any May-December romance,...

Ellen Rapoport, creator, executive producer, and showrunner of HBO Max’s breakout comedy series Minx, is expanding her relationship with Lionsgate Television, the studio behind the series, with an overall deal to produce scripted content.
Minx premiered on HBO Max in March and was recently renewed for a second season. It takes place in 1970s Los Angeles and follows the story of an earnest young feminist, played by Ophelia Lovibond, who joins forces with a low-rent publisher (Jake Johnson) to create the first erotic magazine for women. Executive produced by Paul Feig, the series became an instant hit for its clever writing, evocative imagery, and its championship of feminist ideals from the 70s era. Lennon Parham also stars, among others.
“Throughout the making of Minx I kept waiting for someone to save me from my more outrageous instincts. Obviously that never happened. So, it seems like I’ve found my people,...

P-Valley said goodbye to one of its complex characters this week.
Unfortunately, on P-Valley Season 2 Episode 6, it wasn't the character that fans wanted to see gone.
Sadly, Derrick lives on. Meanwhile, Big Teak, we hardly knew ye.
Lil Murda's prison pal Teak disappeared from the show in just six episodes. And we only got to hear John Clarence Stewart (Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist alumni) sing a few bars, despite the barber praising Teak's voice.
But that wasn't Teak's purpose. First, Teak allowed Stewart to play a radically different character than the straight-laced Simon on Zoey.
Teak also illustrated that, unlike Murda, not every ex-con successfully could make the transition back to the real world.
A prime example of that was the scene at the gas station. Teak's confusion over how to pay at the pump was quickly overshadowed by Murda's delight when he heard his song being played on a car radio.

"Lady Chatterley's Lover", the notorious 1928 novel by English author D. H. Lawrence , exploring a woman's affair with a gamekeeper on her husband's estate, will be adapted by Netflix, to be directed by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre ("The Mustang") for 3000 Pictures, starring Emma Corrin ("The Crown"):
"..'Constance Reid', aka 'Lady Chatterley' (Corrin), is married to rich, upper-class ''Sir Clifford Chatterley', who is disabled from the waist down because of an injury during the 'Great War'.
"In addition to Clifford's physical limitations, his emotional neglect of Constance forces distance between the couple.
"Her emotional frustration leads her into a 'steamy affair'...

Finally, Miss Mississippi fans got some of the answers they have been craving.
That's not to say that P-Valley Season 2 Episode 5 was the last word on the relationship between Keyshawn and her abusive, cracker baby daddy, Derrick.
As this episode pointed out, their union is complicated, putting it nicely.
The biggest problem for this couple is that they're presently heading in different directions.
Derrick is one of those ex-jocks whose life peaked in high school. He blames Keyshawn for "trapping" him and ruining his future (as a cheerleader?).
Having a lover that no one will hire, Keyshawn has been able to monetize her Miss Mississippi persona even amid a pandemic.
This twisted fairy tale, narrated oh so effectively by Uncle Clifford, did go a long way toward explaining what had brought Keyshawn and Derrick to where they are now. They have history, indeed.
The flashbacks hammered home how young the two are,...

"P-Valley" is as raw, uncut, and uncensored as it gets when it comes to portraying Southern strip-club culture on TV. However, the hit Starz drama examines so much more than that. For the past two seasons, viewers have been exposed to some of the grittiest stories ever told with Black and queer characters front and center, sharing true-life-inspired tales that explore the nuances of colorism, racism, queerness, sex work, and domestic violence.
". . . when I first got those scenes, I was scared to death because I've never done anything like this on camera."
Season two's fourth episode, titled "Demethrius," is a huge turning point for Lil Murda (J. Alphonse Nicholson) and Big Teak (John Clarence Stewart), as well as Mercedes (Brandee Evans) and Farrah (Shamika Cotton) - the latter two characters had never engaged in a lesbian encounter. In the episode, both pairings cross into sexual territory and end up sleeping together.

If it ain't one thing, it's another.
The Pynk has been saved from foreclosure, evolved, and stayed afloat during Covid.
Now, on P-Valley Season 2 Episode 4, the club was targeted by a disgruntled patron.
So who ultimately was responsible for the sneezing incident?
If, as it appears, Joy was battling with allergies, there was no way she should have taken off her mask.
But if customer Lauren insisted that all the masks come off with her steady stream of bills, then she assumed liability for what happened.
Unfortunately, the shock of Joy's spray drove the horniness and the drunkenness from Lauren's body, and she awoke in the midst of what could quickly have become a superspreader event.
So, while Lauren's motivation was wrong, she was right to do her job and write up the many code violations at the club.
However, this left Autumn and Uncle Clifford, whose operating capital was already stretched thin,...

Things are changing at The Pynk and for those connected to it.
If P-Valley Season 2 Episode 3 is any indication, it will be a wild ride.
Let's start with those who have escaped Chucalissa, at least for a time.
The Dirty Dozen Tour, featuring Lil Murda and Miss Mississippi, appeared to be a huge success. People were craving live entertainment after being locked up during the pandemic.
Keyshawn loved the public adulation and the freedom of being out from under the thumb of her possessive baby daddy, Derrick.
It also was evident that Keyshawn regretted her decision on P-Valley Season 1 Episode 8, choosing to save Derrick from the kindly Diamond. This choice got her banned from The Pynk, her supportive home, for many years.
Sentiment about Keyshawn was mixed back at The Pynk.
While Uncle Clifford felt betrayed by her pulling a gun on Diamond to protect Derrick, Autumn understood what an...
