Damon Albarn has recalled the first time he watched late singer Terry Hall perform, aged 14.
Hall, the frontman of legendary two tone band, The Specials, died last December aged 63, shortly after a cancer diagnosis.
Now Gorillaz and Blur frontman Albarn has called the singer “the coolest human being on earth”, while being interviewed on Radio X.
"I was a kid of 14," remembered Albarn on the first time he encountered Hall.
"I somehow managed to get to a filming of Top of the Pops, and I found myself standing underneath Terry Hall and thought, ‘This is the coolest human being on Earth.’"
The pair later worked together on the Gorillaz track “911”, and Hall’s solo tracks “Chasing a Rainbow” and “Room Full Of Nothing”.
"He was a lovely, beautiful, fun person, and I didn’t know he was so ill, so I never got a chance to say goodbye,” Albarn added of the late singer.

The 2023 Grammy Awards honored the lives and careers lost in the music industry this past year in a touching In Memoriam segment, with performances by Kacey Musgraves, Sheryl Crow, Mick Fleetwood, Bonnie Raitt and Quavo.
Host Trevor Noah introduced the tribute, acknowledging the importance of how music can unite people through their differences, while also acknowledging the influence of Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons in hip-hop over the years. “It’s Black kids and white kids rejecting segregation in the 1950s, and instead, blending R&b, country and even gospel into rock and roll,” Noah said. “In the 1980s, a young Black rapper from Queens and a Jewish white kid in his NYU dorm came together to make some of the greatest hip-hop of all time. They made a powerful new sound together because they were different.”
He continued, “Music isn’t just the harmony of sound. It’s the...

Kendrick Lamar has revealed why he’s not active on social media.
The 35-year-old rapper, currently on his Morale & the Big Steppers tour, has a reason why his social media is mostly “completely off”.
“My social media, most of the time, is completely off,” Lamar told New York Times. “Because I know, like ... I can easily smell my own s***.
“I know... Like, I’m not one of those dudes that be like, Oh, yeah, I know how good I am, but I also know the reason why I’m so good is because God’s blessed me with the talent to execute on the talent, and the moment that you start getting lost in your ego, that’s when you start going down.”
Earlier this year, Lamar closed Glastonbury Festival with a powerful headline set that saw him chant “Godspeed for women’s rights” before dramatically exiting the Pyramid Stage.

Home renovation presenter Christina Hall has told fans that she is suffering from mercury and lead poisoning.
The HGTV host, who shot to fame presenting Flip or Flop alongside then-husband Tarek el Moussa, now hosts her own show, Christina on the Coast.
Earlier this month, Hall posted that she had been feeling “super exhausted lately” after struggling with “unexplained health stuff for years”, which she suggested could be caused by her breast implants.
But on Thursday (22 December), Hall, 39, shared a series of posts to her Instagram Stories explaining that she had undergone testing at an alternative medicine centre in California and a new cause had been found.
“My scan said I have mercury and lead poisoning,” she explained, adding that she also had “small intestine bacteria overgrowth”.
Hall said the issue was “most likely from all the gross houses I’ve been in (the bad flips)”.

Hodges’ longtime friend, Mike Kaplan, confirmed his death to Et calling the late director “a great friend and a great filmmaker.”

John Mayer has revealed who his breakout single “Your Body Is A Wonderland” was written about.
The single was the fourth track on Mayer’s debut album Room For Squares, released in 2001.
Mayer has famously dated many celebrities over the years, including the likes of Taylor Swift, Cameron Diaz, Katy Perry and Jennifer Aniston.
The singer discussed the origins of the song while being interviewed for popular US podcast Call Her Daddy’s Christmas special, which dropped on Tuesday (20 December).
“Your Body Is A Wonderland” came up when host Alex Cooper and Mayer began talking about Mayer’s early years.
Contrary to what people might think, Mayer was quick to set the record straight that the song was not about a celebrity.
“That was about my first girlfriend,” he said of the 2001 hit.

Lily Allen has been posting on social media about “nepo babies”.
In recent weeks, TikTok users have shared their fascination with famous figures from the entertainment industry who they didn’t realise had famous or successful parents, christening them “nepo babies” (short for nepotism).
Actor Zoë Kravitz (daughter of musician Lenny Kravitz and actor Lisa Bonet) and model and musician Lourdes Leon (Madonna’s eldest daughter) are among those who, in response, have defended themselves over the debate.
Now, singer and actor Allen – daughter of the actor Keith Allen – has weighed in.
“The nepo babies y’all should be worrying about are the ones working for legal firms, the ones working for banks, and the ones working in politics,” she tweeted on Monday (19 December).
“If we’re talking about real world consequences and robbing people of opportunity. But that’s none of my business.”

Terry Hall, the longtime voice of legendary ska group The Specials has died after what the band termed a brief illness. He was 63.
Hall and the Specials reached their widest appeal with the haunting, socially conscious “Ghost Town,” which spent three weeks at No. 1 on the U.K. singles charts in 1981. The song was a commentary on economic strife in Margaret Thatcher’s England and the social unrest of the era, including riots that year in Britain. It was named “Single of the Year” by all three of the major UK music magazines.
The Specials were formed in the late ’70s by songwriter/keyboardist Dammers, vocalist Tim Strickland, guitarist/vocalist Lynval Golding, drummer Silverton Hutchinson and bassist Horace Panter (a.k.a. Sir Horace Gentleman). Strickland was replaced by Hall shortly after the band’s formation. They were at the vanguard of the the 2 Tone ska revival of the late 1970s in Britain,...

Even if you’ve seen the footage before, in L.A. punk docs and Vh-1 specials, it’s still thrilling to watch: Five women on stage, their outfits resembling a day-glo mix of thrift-store chic and a temper tantrum’s aftermath, two different kinds of eyeshadow and smeared streaks of rouge fighting for dominance, bashing out crude anthems at the Masque Club. “They played three songs, and two of them were the same song,” one witness remembers about that gig.

King Krule issued a trippy stop-motion animation video for “Logos,” a track from his acclaimed second LP, 2017’s The Ooz. The musician’s brother, visual artist Jack Marshall, created the hazy clip, which follows a one-eyed extraterrestrial through a shifting desert landscape filled with crocodiles, randomly sprouting trees, smoking crescent moons and a dog playing a warped saxophone.

With 135 bands on the bill, the three-day Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which begins today, offers a blend of big stars, buzz bands, veterans acts making – they hope – a comeback, inspired DJs and relatively new artists with the promise to do bigger things. That egalitarian blend is what makes Coachella the best festival in the U.S.: Until a band you’re eager to see is ready to appear on one of the five stages spread through the huge pitch, you’re likely to find something nearby that’s worth hearing.
This year, among the acts that are scheduled to appear are a few curiosities. Not that they aren’t talented or can’t be fabulous. It’s that few of us in the audience can know what to expect until the music begins. To whit:
