With the abundance of labs and fellowships designed to give up-and-coming filmmakers a much-needed boost, the Nicholl Fellowship — launched in 1986 — still stands above the fray as being one of the most important opportunities for entry into the industry. Each of the winners receives a $35,000 prize with the understanding that they will complete a feature-length screenplay during their fellowship year. Just as important, their winning project instantly becomes a must-read by every agency in Hollywood.
The global competition has awarded 152 fellowships to date. Recent scripts by Nicholl Fellowship alumni include “The Glass Castle” and “Holy Rollers;” additional program veterans have gone on to receive plum writing assignments in film (Pixar’s “Cars 3”) and television (Netflix’s “The Punisher”).
Nine individuals and one screenwriting team were selected as 2017 fellowship recipients from more than 7,000 submissions; the winners are listed in bold:

HBO is getting into the aftershow business.
Following in the footsteps of AMC's The Talking Dead and Talking Bad, the premium network is launching an aftershow for its own wildly successful series, Game of Thrones, called After The Thrones. This is the first show that's part of the network's collaboration with former Grantlander Bill Simmons, who will executive produce while Andy Greenwald and Chris Ryan, the hosts of Grantland's Watch The Thrones podcast, take hosting duties. The first episode will debut on April 25th, a day after the season six premiere of Game of Thrones, and it sounds like all of the new episodes will follow that same pattern of airing the Monday after each new episode of Got.
I've never heard Greenwald and Ryan's previous podcast, so I'm not sure what kind of hosts they'll be, but I have to admit that I was a little relieved to hear...

With the return to Westeros just weeks away, Game of Thrones fans (myself included) can’t wait to see what’s going to happen to Jon Snow and Daenerys. And now we’ll have a home to catch a recap of the ongoings at the Seven Kingdoms. HBO announced today they’re launching After the Thrones, what the network is calling “a lively, humorous and sophisticated look” at the hugely popular series. It will be hosted by Andy Greenwald and Chris Ryan, who currently host The Watch podcast for The Ringer. The show will play on HBO Now, HBO Go and HBO On Demand. The deal for After the Thrones is part of HBO’s newly-formed relationship with The Ringer, Bill Simmons’ company. Simmons, a former Espn host and the mind behind Grantland, split from the sports giant when they announced in 2015 they wouldn’t renew his contract. Recap shows...

Like "The Walking Dead" and "Breaking Bad" before it, "Game of Thrones" is getting in on the after show trend, and will launch a new recap series, "After the Thrones," to coincide with the show's upcoming sixth season.
"After the Thrones" is set to premiere on Monday, April 25, the day after the "Thrones" season premiere, and will be hosted by critics and podcasters Andy Greenwald and Chris Ryan, in conjunction with Bill Simmons's new sports and pop culture venture, The Ringer. Greenwald and Ryan previously hosted the popular Watch the Thrones and Hollywood Prospetcus podcasts for Grantland before the site shuttered in 2015, and now co-host The Watch for The Ringer's podcast network.
Here's the official logline for the series, per The Ringer and the "After the Thrones" site:
An epic show deserves an epic conversation, and Chris Ryan and Andy Greenwald are answering the call on 'After the Thrones.

A review of tonight's Better Call Saul coming up just as soon as I'm jealous of your big bowl of balls... "I'm ready for my close-up, Mr. McGill." -Mrs. Strauss Prequels can be like straightjackets, where the writers are so bound by pre-established facts about their characters that there's barely any room to move, or breathe. With Jimmy and Mike, though, we know a whole lot more about how their respective stories ended on Breaking Bad than how they started, which has given Better Call Saul a lot of lattitude in showing how each of them arrived in Albuquerque with the best of intentions before ultimately stumbling down paths that would intersect not only with each other, but eventually with Walter White. This season has slowed that descent, in part because the Saul creative team clearly enjoys writing these versions of the characters, in part because many of them were...

Today, four Grantland staff members resigned, and announced their intentions to join Bill Simmons on a new project over at HBO. Those four staffers were Juliet Litman, Chris Ryan, Sean Fennessey, and Mallory Rubin. Additionally, Dan Fierman, who was second on the masthead to only the editor-in-chief, has also left to take a new job as the Vice President and Editorial Director of MTV News. I wrote a column about Simmons’ departure back in May; I was, and remain, pretty upset about it. There is a lot of dislike for Simmons in certain circles of the internet, most of which I disagree, and some of which I do. Deadspin, in particular, has been harsh on Simmons. I bring this up not to yell at Deadspin, but to point out that for a site that has such problems with Simmons, they have also praised him for his leadership when he was…...

Many of the greatest sports films all have one thing in common: they aren't just about sports. When the Game Stands Tall is a movie based on a true story that chronicles what happens when a high school football team loses its 151 winning streak. The gripping football sequences coupled with emotional layers in the film make this movie more than just a simple underdog sports film. Under the watchful eyes of Coaches Bob Ladouceur and Terry Eidson, the players concentrate on making the perfect effort and becoming men of character.
"I wasn't interested in making a movie just about football," says director Thomas Carter. "The whole thing that attracted me and what De La Salle's program is about is who are these kids are going to be as young men when they come out of the program. What values and sense of personal responsibility are they going to have? Those...

When the Game Stands Tall is a movie based on the real-life high school football team, the Spartans. After losing their streak of 151 games won in a row, the players learn important life lessons from Coaches Bob Ladouceur and Terry Eidson—and through the making of the movie, the cast learned a couple of lessons as well.

This Video Explains Why Humans Aren't Sexually Exclusive By Nature We all have closets we need to come out of. by kate hakala For the most part, our society and family structures are held up by the main belief that humans are destined to pair off in sexually exclusive partnerships. One nice lady finds one fetching man, they bone, and then they live happily ever after while raising their babies. Perhaps you've heard of Christopher Ryan, the co-author of the controversial Sex at Dawn, whose personal mission is to challenge our view of sexual monogamy. In a Ted talk released yesterday, Ryan tours us through how our prehistoric origins have impacted modern sexuality. He rejects the standard narrative of our sexual evolution – that historically men have leased out food and shelter in exchange for women's sexual fidelity. In a world where about 40 percent of women are [...]...

How times change. When Botho Strauss's play was first seen in Britain in 1983 it was greeted with boos and mass walkouts on its pre-West End tour.
Now it arrives in a crisp new Martin Crimp translation and an exciting Sydney Theatre Company production that yields a tumultuous performance from Cate Blanchett and is met with wild enthusiasm. But we're not just applauding a great performance; we've also finally caught up with Strauss's play.
It would be all too easy to describe it as a study in postwar alienation. Actually, it is about a woman who desperately wants to belong. Accordingly, Strauss sends his eager heroine, Lotte, on a contemporary odyssey, where she encounters a series of cold shoulders. Starting as an outsider on a Moroccan package tour, she oscillates between the German cities of Saarbrücken and Essen, only to be rejected by her husband, spurned by an old...

"Following the development process we have decided not to produce Blake's 7. However, Sky continues to invest heavily in original drama and it remains at the heart of our plans," said a spokeswoman for the broadcaster. "We have just announced an extended run for the second series of Chris Ryan's Strike Back and we'll (more)...

If you read Dan Savage's column, you've probably heard of the new book Sex at Dawn, by Christopher Ryan, who holds a Ph.D. in psychology, and Cacilda Jethá, a psychiatrist. The central argument of the book is that monogamy is not natural to humans, but rather imposed by society, and that understanding this will help people navigate their sexual relationships in a more honest and fulfilling way. The authors base their conclusions on a wide variety of evidence, including the behavior of our closest primate relatives, human anatomy, and anthropology. I don't have a copy of the book myself, so the following discussion is based on the excerpts and on comments from one of the authors, and therefore may miss some nuances that are addressed in the book itself, but I think the main conclusions are fairly clear from the excerpts.

When it comes to extramarital affairs, Tiger Woods may have raised the bar, but according to a new book on modern sexuality, the pro golfer may have been responding to a biological desire to "revive his staggering testosterone." In "Sex at Dawn: The Prehistoric Origins of Modern Sexuality" co-authors Cacilda Jetha and Christopher Ryan argue that men's testosterone levels begin to decline in their 20s, and one way they revive it is by meeting a new woman...Here's what you had to say: Tee commented via Facebook: "No one is programed to do anything. Folks cheat because they want to and feel they can get away with it." Cassandra wrote via Facebook: "I think the research maybe on to something, however, self control and self respect ought to still play a major role in a man's mind."...

Richard Armitage has admitted that he felt under pressure while working on his new show Strike Back. The show is adapted from former Sas soldier Chris Ryan's novel but Armitage told The Pa that he was nervous about performing in front of Ryan.
