MollywoodIn recent times, many female actors like Navya Nair and Meera Jasmine who disappeared earlier, have begun floating back to films not just to play the big sister or mother, but to make their presence felt.It is somehow a comforting moment when Lalu Alex and Manju Warrier, playing father and daughter in Jo and The Boy, talk about her marriage like it is something she has to do having touched 30 years of age. When the film came out, Manju was 36, not far off her screen age. Still, the scene is comforting because it has for the longest time been the forte of men to keep playing the guy just ripe for marriage decade after decade, while women would have long left the field by 30 or would be cast all too unfairly as mothers and grandmothers of men twice their age. But Manju Warrier, a woman actor in her mid-30s,...

ReviewNavya’s performance is a world away from her ‘Nandanam’ days. Her body language and expressions are so under control that they convey the fears of Janaki without the slightest bit of exaggeration. When Navya Nair’s character is introduced in Janaki Jaane, she is in an autorickshaw, asking the driver to accompany her to her destination. I have a problem of fear, she tells him. The scene that follows and a song establishes this fear in slightly comical terms. The film, set on this interesting premise, becomes distasteful when it makes a story out of it and sets it in dirty political games. However, it gets saved in the latter half, in its portrayal of the character’s comeback. Director Aneish Upaasana presents an unusual heroine with Janaki. Her fears themselves are not unusual — she is afraid of darkness, of walking alone in side-lanes, and needs company to go to the bathroom.

Navya Nair is admirably calm in the face of the repetitive question, answering for another actor’s doing. Vinayakan, her co-actor in Oruthee, a film she’s making a comeback with, made some problematic statements last week, directing a few of them to a woman journalist. It was a promotional meeting for Oruthee, and Navya was present on the stage along with Vinayakan and a few other men, including the film’s director Vk Prakash. The actor looks like she stepped out from the sets of Nandanam – one of her first films in Malayalam as a 16-year-old – and came straight to Oruthee, her comeback film that is releasing on Friday, March 18. It is not that Navya wanted to take a break, she was simply waiting for the right movie. In the years in between, she did two Kannada films – remakes of the Malayalam Drishyam – in which she played Meena’s role, the wife of the protagonist. “Suresh Babu, Oruthee’s writer, approached me with the script and I chose...

Flix Flashback‘Nandanam’, directed and written by Ranjith and loosely adapted from Mt Vasudevan Nair’s ‘Neelathamara’, gives a fantastical spin to a love story between a domestic worker and the scion of the family.Neelima MenonYouTube/apimalayalamsongsThough he has made films across a variety of genres, as a writer/director Ranjith’s most noted works have given Malayalam cinema the ‘alpha male’ hero – for example, Devasuram and Aaram Thampuran. His oeuvre includes unlikely satirical comedies such as Pranchiyettan & the Saint, award-winning dramas such as Thirakkatha, and thrillers such as Paleri Manikyam. But Nandanam (2002) stands out for its (decidedly understated yet) divine treatment of a tried-and-tested romantic trope. Balamani’s days always begin at the crack of dawn. Though she occupies only a corner of that large ancient tharavadu, fenced by greenery, with an elaborate front yard and backyard and a rectangular in-house pond, it’s this pint-sized girl who literally runs the show.

OpinionWhy take online trolling and memes so seriously? Because jokes like these only normalise the violence against women.Sowmya RajendranThere is often no rhyme or reason for why things go viral on the Internet. While a lot of trends are harmless fun, sometimes, what's being enjoyed by a large number of people ends up reiterating a toxic idea in popular culture. The latest in this line is the 'Vasu annan' meme fest on Malayalam social media. Vasu annan, played by Saikumar, was the villain in the 2002 Malayalam film Kunjikoonan starring Dileep, Navya Nair and Manya. In the film, Vasu attempts to sexually assault Manya's character Lakshmi and she ends up dying while trying to escape from him. According to a Facebook post put up by Manya, the memes began with Vijay Sanal, who runs the popular YouTube channel 'Sanal editz'. Sanal often mixes up dialogues, music and visuals from different films to create funny videos.

For someone who has worked in an industry where men call the shots, one would think a female actor would be less tolerant to the patriarchy prevalent in society.
