Exclusive: I sit down for breakfast with Charlie Sheen not exactly knowing what to expect. His bookend episodes of Bookie that reunited him with Two And a Half Men‘s Chuck Lorre remind of what was lost after the actor’s inexplicable, substance-fueled “Tiger Blood” meltdown led to an abrupt parting of the ways and separating him from one of sitcom TV’s highest-ever salaries at a reported $1.8 million an episode. It has been a dozen years since then, and I come in harboring my own feelings. Basically, Two And a Half Men (the Charlie Harper Years) have been my reliable go-to at the end of most long days in the trenches. I can practically recite the dialogue along with Sheen, Jon Cryer, Angus T. Jones, as well as Holland Taylor (their mom), Melanie Lynskey (Charlie’s stalker), Marin Hinkle (Alan Harper’s ex), and the late Conchata Ferrell, who played the housekeeper Berta.

Charlie Sheen isn’t the only “Two and a Half Men” star to reunite with exec producer Chuck Lorre on his new Max comedy “Bookie.” Also making a cameo in the “Bookie” series’ opener: Angus T. Jones, the “half man” from “Two and a Half Men,” now all grown up.
Sheen’s appearance on “Bookie” (which premiered Nov. 30 on Max) is rightfully getting all of the attention, given the newsworthiness of his reunion with Lorre, a decade after their explosive falling out.

But Jones’ appearance is also notable: The young actor wasn’t a regular cast member in the final two seasons of “Two and a Half Men,” and even at one point dismissed his contributions to the show, calling himself “a paid hypocrite.”
Like Sheen, Jones plays himself in the “Bookie” premiere.

It’s quite a reunion in today’s premiere of Chuck Lorre’s new Max comedy series Bookie.
The episode revisits the poker scene in Lorre’s Two and a Half Men pilot, which reunites Lorre’s Two and a Half Men alums Charlie Sheen and Angus T. Jones.
In the Bookie premiere, Danny, played by Sebastian Maniscalco, heads to Malibu to collect a debt from Sheen, whom he finds at a rehab facility. But Sheen isn’t a patient at the facility; he’s actually hosting a weekly poker game, and one of the players is “Half Man” Angus T. Jones, who played 8-year-old Jake Harper opposite Sheen on Two and a Half Men. The scene also includes the same poker buddies who attended Charlie Harper’s poker game in 2003.
Lorre spoke about the scene in an interview with Extra. “Charlie and I were discussing recreating that poker scene.

Dominic Sessa was a drama student at the private Deerfield Academy boarding school in Massachusetts who had just finished his fall play in 2021 when he found out that a casting director for a new film called “The Holdovers,” to be directed by Alexander Payne, was coming to his school to conduct auditions. “I jumped right on that and thought that’d be cool to be in the background,” he remembers, “maybe be at a desk in a classroom scene or something. But immediately, when I met the casting director Susan Shopmaker, she was really interested in something that I was bringing.” Mind you, Sessa had never so much as auditioned for an on-camera role before, much less co-starred in a feature. “I didn’t know how callbacks worked,” he admits, “so the fact they were asking me to audition again and again, I didn’t really fully appreciate how good a sign that was.

Born in Omaha, Nebraska, to two parents of Greek heritage, two-time Oscar winner Alexander Payne was awarded Greek citizenship last year around the time he was working on his latest feature, The Holdovers.
In line with the honor, Payne has returned to his adoptive home to present The Holdovers as one of the centerpiece screenings at this year’s Thessaloniki International Film Festival.
“I’ve screened almost all my films here,” Payne said, addressing the crowd at a presser in Thessaloniki this afternoon.
The Holdovers, Payne’s eighth feature, is a 70s-set comedy centered around Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti), a bad-tempered tutor at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually, he forms an unlikely bond with one of them — the damaged, brainy troublemaker Angus (Dominic Sessa) — and the school’s head...

Plot: At an elite prep school in 1970, the students prepare to leave for their Christmas holidays, but a handful cannot be with their families. To their dismay, they’re left in charge of the much-disliked teacher, Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti). When all of the boys are given a last-minute reprieve by one of their fathers and are whisked away on a ski trip, Hunham is left behind for the holidays with the one kid, Angus (Dominic Sessa), who can’t get permission to go, along with the school’s cook, Mary (Da’Vine Joy Randolph).
Review: Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers is a very welcome return to form for the director. Playing out like a lost film from the early seventies, complete with a simulated 35mm feel to the lensing (with the wear and team of a film print), it’s a low-key but deeply moving character drama with some hilariously profane dialogue.

You can almost smell the tea and toast of a Saturday afternoon kick-back with the television as you watch Bouli Lanners island tale of tentative romance. Gentle enough for even the most fragile of constitutions, the writer/director/star puts the wild and windswept backdrop of the Isle of Lewis to good use in his first English language feature, without it feeling like an advert for the tourist board.
Lanners plays Phil, sort for Philippe, an incomer who spends his days working for the farm run by gruff Angus (Julian Glover), alongside the older man's son Peter (Cal MacAninch) grandson Brian (Andrew Still). Also living at the farm is lonely middle-aged singleton Millie (Michelle Fairley), who has picked up the local nickname "ice cream" on account.
When Phil has a stroke that makes him lose his memory, Millie makes a decision that surprises even her. The film hinges on the late-romance warmth that is.

Alexander Payne is well aware that they don’t make movies like The Holdovers anymore. This is evident before the movie even starts, opening with a ratings card right out of the 1970s and production titles from the same time. Filmed in 35mm, it has the warmth that only film can provide – despite its winter setting – and its soundtrack is replete with era-appropriate Christmas standards.
But beyond its aesthetic trappings, movies like The Holdovers are still rare, at least for those who hope to see them in theaters. A character-based comedy about the begrudging friendship between a prickly teacher and one of his students, it’s the type of warm-hearted inspirational movie that could become a modest hit in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s but today would be relegated to streaming and stretched out for 10 hours. But just because it would normally be shipped out to video on demand doesn...

"I hope audiences feel it's a successful and unforced, lived in sense of period and time." Focus Features has revealed a brief behind-the-scenes featurette for The Holdovers, the latest film by filmmaker Alexander Payne. It already started playing in limited theaters this past weekend, expanding in wide release throughout November. This featurette focuses on making the film feel like it was made in and takes place in the 1970s, which is not as easy anymore in the 2020s. With no family and nowhere to go over the Christmas holiday in 1970, Paul remains at school to supervise students unable to journey home. After a few days, only one student holdover remains -- a trouble-making 15-year-old named Angus. Joining Paul & Angus is head cook Mary, an African American woman whose own son was recently lost in Vietnam. These very different people form an unlikely Christmas family sharing comic misadventures during two snowy weeks.

Bouli Lanners’ picturesque setting makes room for a lonely woman to take advantage of memory loss and kid the victim they had been lovers
‘Have you guys seen Jason Bourne?” asks Brian (Andrew Still), a farm labourer in the Outer Hebrides, near the start of Nobody Has to Know. “It’s exactly the same kind of set-up!” How droll of the writer-director Bouli Lanners to invoke that breakneck action franchise when his own film could scarcely be more different, save for a plot involving memory loss. The closest thing here to an action set-piece occurs when an estate agent is tardy returning to the office, leaving her colleague to take a later-than-usual lunch break.
If this isn’t a film to set the heart racing, it doesn’t leave that organ entirely untroubled; with his script’s echoes of 40s weepie Random Harvest, Lanners is aiming for similar status. The...

Paul Giamatti turned in one of the best performances of 2004 in Alexander Payne‘s “Sideways.” He played Miles, a depressed writer who takes a trip to Santa Barbara County to celebrate his friend’s (Thomas Haden Church) engagement. He reap bids at the Critics Choice, SAG and Golden Globes awards. It was shock when he was snubbed at the Oscars in favor of eventual winner Jamie Foxx (“Ray”) plus Don Cheadle (“Hotel Rwanda”), Johnny Depp (“Finding Neverland”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Aviator”), and Clint Eastwood (“Million Dollar Baby”).
The academy can finally rectify that oversight as Giamatti and Payne have reunited for “The Holdovers,” which Focus Features is releasing on Oct. 27. Giamatti is a curmudgeon of a teacher forced to stay behind and look after students staying at his school throughout the holiday period. Dominic Sessa and Da’Vine Joy Randolph are great in supporting roles but it’s Giamatti who is the star of the picture.

Angus Cloud is appearing onscreen for one of the last times in heist movie “Your Lucky Day.”
The “Euphoria” star, who died at age 25 in July 2023, leads writer-director-actor Daniel Brown’s feature directorial debut. Cloud plays drug dealer Sterling, who holds a convenience store hostage after he witnesses an older wealthy man win a $156 million lottery. Jessica Garza, Elliot Knight, and Mousa Hussein Kraish play witnesses, with Sterling Beaumon cast as a cop. The film is adapted from writer Brown’s 2010 short film of the same name, with Rider Strong in the role of Sterling.
“I had written the character based on people I had grown up with: guys who sold drugs and would start fights with frat boys or their stepdads, but who were also super protective and loyal to their friends,” Brown told Entertainment Weekly. “[Cloud’s] stories and outlook were so right on for the character, I just had to go for it.

According to our combined Oscar predictions as of this writing, Martin Scorsese (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) is in second place for Best Director with 4/1 odds. Meanwhile, Alexander Payne (“The Holdovers”) is on the bubble in sixth place with 16/1 odds. Both movies are currently expected to reap bids for Best Picture. What’s especially interesting is that, so far, every time Payne has been nominated for Best Director, he has been up against Scorsese. Could that happen again this year?

Angus Cloud is being remembered by director Daniel Brown, who cast the late “Euphoria” star in a starring role in his upcoming film “Your Lucky Day”.
Speaking with Variety, Brown pays tribute to Cloud, who plays a low-level drug dealer who finds himself a tense standoff with police after killing a lottery winner who just discovered he held a winning ticket worth $156 million, in order to take the ticket for himself.
“It’s not really even mine anymore. It’s really for him.”
“I had written the script again and shared it with my wife. While I was out of town on a shoot, she had watched all of ‘Euphoria’, and she said, ‘You know, who should be in your movie? It should be this guy, Angus Cloud,'” Brown recalled.

Daniel Brown has paid tribute to his 'Your Lucky Day' star Angus Cloud. The director is preparing for the release of his movie - which tells the story of a man who wins the lottery but dies shortly after finding out his numbers came up - but admitted it is bittersweet as Angus passed away earlier this year.In the movie, Angus played a drug dealer who held up the lottery winner.Brown told Variety: "I remember listening to an interview where Angus was talking about fame and having a hard time. And I just thought he was such a sweetheart that it would be Ok, that it would work out because he was just so genuinely kind."Maybe because I am a dad, I think about directing a little bit as being a dad to your cast. You’re there to take care of them. So I was imagining the future.

If you can’t take it with you when you go, then where does it end up?
Daniel Brown thought a lot about this before making his upcoming film “Your Lucky Day,” which tells the ironic story of a man who wins the lottery but dies shortly after finding out his numbers hit. First created as short in 2010 starring Rider Strong, the story takes place one Christmas Eve at a corner store called Sip ‘n’ Go, where a white-haired boomer-aged wealthy man wearing a tie stops to scan his lotto tickets. After making brief and somewhat bigoted small talk with the store’s owner Amir (Mousa Hussien Kraish), the machine plays a little jingle, “Winner!! Winner!!” appears on the tiny screen. “What’s the total up to?” the man asks Amir. “$156 million.”

The July death of actor Angus Cloud has been ruled an accidental overdose.
The “Euphoria” actor had taken a lethal combination of fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, according to the Alameda County Coroner, which shared its report with multiple media outlets on Thursday.
The 25-year-old had been despondent after the death of his father. He was found dead at his family home in Oakland, California on July 31.
His mother Lisa told first responders that Cloud did not have a pulse and that his condition was due to “a possible overdose.” She later clarified that Angus “did not die by suicide,” as had been widely reported.
“Social media posts have suggested his death was intentional. I want you to know that is not the case,” Lisa Cloud wrote on her Facebbook page in August.
She described her son’s last day as a “joyful one,” adding, “He did not intend to end his life.

Every Christmas movie has to have its scrooge. In Alexander Payne’s holiday-set dramedy The Holdovers, the curmudgeon is Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti), a long-time teacher at Barton Academy, an elite Massachusetts boarding school. Paul treats the affluent students in his ancient history class with contempt, gleefully terrorizing them with poor grades in order to trip up their otherwise smooth rides to fancy colleges. He’s the kind of teacher who flunks almost everyone on their end-of-semester exam and then assigns the class extra homework over the holidays as prep for yet another exam as soon as they get back. Bah humbug, indeed.
It’s not just the students at Barton who loathe Paul. So does the school’s administration. Hence Paul being saddled with holdover duty over the winter break—that is, to supervise any students who, for whatever reason, can’t go on lavish vacations like the rest of their peers,...

The Holdovers Review: Alexander Payne And Paul Giamatti Reunite For This Marvellous Film [TIFF 2023]
Alexander Payne has long been one of the most respected American directors, tapping into unique stories of the human condition. From high school elections ("Election"), the abortion debate ("Citizen Ruth"), or even wine tasting ("Sideways"), Payne has a way of finding humor and heart in everything he directs. His work never really faltered until his last directorial effort "Downsizing" in 2017. While I was higher on it than most, it lacked much of Payne's signature charm that makes his movies, often about unbearable people, so irresistible.
Speaking of unbearable, one of his most prickly and obnoxious characters yet takes the lead in "The Holdovers." Paul Dunham (Paul Giamatti) teaches ancient civilizations at Barton Academy, a top-tier boarding school in the 1970s. His course is the greatest love in his life -- Hunham references various points in ancient history more than he blinks, bringing an immense knowledge of his subject matter that's unrivaled.

Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival. Focus Features releases the film in select theaters on Friday, October 27, with expansion to follow.
Set in the winter of 1970 and shot to look as if it had actually been made back then, Alexander Payne’s nuanced and hyper-literate “The Holdovers” takes great pleasure in defying every impulse of modern cinema from even before the moment it starts. And yet, it might take even greater pleasure in embracing some of the movies’ most time-honored tropes and traditions.
Chief among them: The inviolable rule that anything a school teacher “casually” tells their students in the first act of a film must speak to a core idea of the film itself. In that light, be sure to take notes during the opening scene in which Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti) quotes Cicero to the “vulgar philistines” in his Ancient Civilization class.

It’s the holiday season in Alexander Payne’s sweet, good-looking yet occasionally schmaltzy throwback “The Holdovers” and Paul Giamatti’s grumpy Paul Hunham has stolen the Christmas of 1970. Well, not quite, as his character—an Ancient History teacher at the fictional New England school Barton Academy—isn’t exactly the Grinch despite being severely disliked by his students and fellow educators alike.
Sure, he gives stingy grades like F+, is uncompromisingly prickly and calls his students things like “snarling Visigoths” in his amusingly embellished figure of speech full of insults and outdated language—one of the many low-key delights of David Hemingson’s script. But it isn’t exactly his doing that several kids who can’t go home for the holidays are held over at the academy under his supervision.
This unwelcome winter break gig is a punishment of sorts for Hunham—if you fail the wrong kid...

The casting tapes that helped Angus Cloud land his “Euphoria” role have been shared over a week after the late actor’s sudden death.
Cloud’s mother Lisa Cloud posted a link to the clips on Facebook. “This was just sent to me by [‘Euphoria’ casting director] Jennifer Venditti who scouted Angus in Brooklyn. In the video, Cloud is asked how he would describe himself, to which he responds “probably goofy” and a fan of spontaneity. Some of his adventures, he says, led to breaking into the San Francisco and Oakland zoos, with Cloud and his friends entering the cages of kangaroos and warthogs.
“That shit was really sketchy,” Cloud says.
