AI - i.e. artificial intelligence - is everywhere right now. On TikTok, I often come across AI covers sung by digital imitations of other artists. My friends who are teachers say that they know students are turning in AI-generated work. And AI-generated images seem to go viral all the time; that image of the Pope wearing a giant white puffer still makes me laugh, even if I know there's something not quite right there. As a writer, I'm constantly thinking about the threat AI poses to what I do, too.
Somewhat serendipitously - seeing as these projects have been in the works for literally years - it's also been a big year for fictional AI onscreen. This summer, "Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1" featured Tom Cruise's borderline superhuman Ethan Hunt facing off against a literal AI. The humans he physically fights in the real world are directed...

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse took the unique animation style of the first movie and cranked the dial straight to eleven. While the Spider-Verse sequel was a big success, it came under fire for harsh working conditions that reportedly pushed artists to the brink in order to get the film done.
Related Across the Spider-Verse producers fought to keep Spider-Punk in the movie
While speaking with Variety, Spider-Verse producers/co-writers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were asked to comment on the ongoing strikes and were given an opportunity to address the criticism about working conditions on the sequel.

With the many, many, many versions of Spider-Man introduced in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, it says something that Spider-Punk emerged as a breakout character. However, the character wasn’t always part of the story and the producers had to fight to keep him in the movie once Daniel Kaluuya signed on.
Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya), aka Hobie Brown, is part of the Spider-Society in Across the Spider-Verse, although he mostly plays by his own rules. He forms a bond with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) and by the end of the film, the stage is set for Hobie to play a bigger role in the upcoming sequel. “He was in and out of the picture for a little while because we weren’t sure which elements we were going to stick in this part and which were going to migrate to the next movie,” Phil Lord told Entertainment Weekly. “When we met Daniel Kaluuya,...

Miles Morales encounters an array of new Spider-People in “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” including Daniel Kaluuya’s Hobart “Hobie” Brown (aka Spider-Punk). While Spider-Punk plays an integral part in the sequel, as well as became a fan-favorite due to his carefree attitude and spiky mohawk, writer-producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller revealed in an interview with EW that the anarchic superhero was nearly cut from the film.
“He was in and out of the picture for a little while because we weren’t sure which elements we were going to stick in this part and which were going to migrate to the next movie,” Lord said.
However, when the writer-producers met Kaluuya, they “realized that he had to be Hobie Brown, no matter the cost.”
“And Hobie had to be in the movie because that personality needed to be part of the story,” Lord continued.

A line of dialogue by Andy Samberg's Ben Reilly/Scarlet Spider was removed and replaced in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Samberg's brief appearance in Spider-Verse 2 as the Scarlet Spider left a lasting impact on fans. So much so that Sony Pictures celebrated the character on social media, comparing him to Ryan Gosling's Ken from Barbie.
Ben Reilly is not the first character to have lines of dialogue altered for the home release of the film. Hailee Steinfeld's Gwen Stacy had an emotional line removed and a powerful Miles Morales speech was cut short.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was recently released on Digital and fans quickly noticed many small changes from the version they recall seeing in theaters. While speaking with GamesRadar, Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller explained the reason behind the changes.
“There was an international version that was made almost two months before the movie came out because it had to be translated into different languages and these French censors have to decide what the rating of the movie is in Europe,” Christopher Miller explained. “The team at [Sony Pictures] Imageworks still had some shots that they felt they could do better for the finished version. So, they cleaned up and tweaked those things.“
Miller added that crew members would suggest other changes that made their way into the constantly shifting cut of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. “Certain crew members – people in the sound department or on the animation team – were like,...

"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" took us back into the multiverse, starting with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) visiting Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) in the Brooklyn of Earth-1610. She then takes him to the Spider-Society, where Spider-Beings from all over the multiverse converge and help each other out.
Over the course of the film, Miles finds out that he wasn't ever supposed to be Spider-Man and, because of that, the universe of Earth-42 doesn't have one. Wha's more, he ends up having to evade the Spider-Beings who want to stop him from preventing a "canon event," as in something that must happen to create our web-slinging superheroes. As a result, Miles eventually makes his way to Earth-42, a place where his uncle Aaron (Mahershala Ali) is still alive, his dad is dead, and another version of Miles (Jharrel Jerome) has become...

Good news, web-heads! After "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" broke big at the box office this summer, overtaking the total of the original "Into the Spider-Verse" and proving that animation as a medium continues to thrive, fans will soon be able to relive this latest chapter in the lives of Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld). The highly-anticipated sequel boasts even more animation magic and a much larger-scale, multiverse-hopping adventure than the 2018 film, though not at the expense of losing any of the heart or emotion established the first time around. Miles is still well on his way towards figuring out his place in all this, even as the end of "Across the Spider-Verse" brought him face-to-face with a couple of very personal figures from his past. The upcoming sequel "Beyond the Spider-Verse" may no longer arrive as soon as audiences hoped, but at least we...

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has resonated with audiences in almost as many ways as there are multiverses. There’s the emotionality of webslinger Miles Morales and his family, both inherited and found, that drives his heroism. The thematic resonance of a young person determined to tell his own story authentically. Action sequences that are as inventive as they are viscerally thrilling. And audacious animation that juxtaposes dynamic poses and painterly images.
This multidimensional success of “Across the Spider-Verse” can be directly attributed to its three directors, Kemp Powers, Joaquim Dos Santos and Justin K. Thompson — indeed, to the fact that there are three. Set to receive Variety’s Creative Impact in Animation Award on July 18, the trio leaned into individual strengths while working together toward a common goal, balancing formal innovation and timeless truths to create a forward-thinking animated classic.

Shea Whigham thought his pursuit of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker would forever be his toughest assignment, but then Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt quickly proved him wrong in Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One.
In Christopher “McQ” McQuarrie’s critically acclaimed seventh chapter of the spy action franchise, Whigham plays Jasper Briggs, a foot soldier for the CIA’s Clandestine Services, and together with his partner Degas (Greg Tarzan Davis), he’s tasked with the tall order of chasing Ethan Hunt around the world. And while his similar role in Todd Phillips’ box office smash hit Joker (2019) would seem like the inspiration for his Mission casting, it was actually his Dod bureaucrat character from the Sam Esmail-directed and Julie Roberts-led Homecoming that piqued McQ’s interest.

It really is true: Spider-Man does whatever a spider can. And across 10 theatrically released films, in live-action and animation both, he (or sometimes she) has spun a web any size, catching those thieves just like flies. Still, not all webs are created equal, and some of those captured thieves have made for better cinematic opponents than others.
Indeed, alongside Batman, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man has probably been blessed with the most consistent series of superhero movies released by Hollywood, with millions of fans ready to swear that either Tobey Maguire, Tom Holland, or the kaleidoscopic animation led by Miles Morales (and Shameik Moore’s voice) is the best Spidey. Heck, there are those out there who will defend the Andrew Garfield years.

While The Flash may be struggling to find its footing at the box office, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is having no such issue. Sony’s animated sequel has now crossed $500 million at the worldwide box office, with $290.5 million domestically and $215.9 million internationally. Way to go, Spidey.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is also miles ahead of the first movie, which took in $384 worldwide, a number the sequel crossed in just 12 days. Across the Spider-Verse obviously still has legs at the box office, despite competition from Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Elemental, and The Flash.
Related Box Office Predictions: Can Spider-Man reclaim the top spot?
“When Miles Morales is unexpectedly approached by his best friend and love interest Gwen Stacy to complete a mission to save every universe of Spider-People from a mysterious new villain who could cause a catastrophic disaster, Miles is up for the challenge,” reads the official synopsis for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was filled to the brim with a variety of eclectic visual styles, so it says a lot that Spider-Punk was able to instantly catch the audience’s attention.
Sony’s biggest hit of the summer, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, won’t be getting a release in the United Arab Emirates, Deadline confirmed Thursday. The pic was set for release on June 22 in the Gulf region.
Apparently, the point of contention has to do with Gwen Stacy, and whether the character is trans. One of the frames of concern to UAE censors is a “protect trans lives” poster in the background of one scene. It’s our understanding that Sony wasn’t expecting a release of Spider-Verse in the UAE given their rigorous censorship process for kids movies.
Reuters, who first had the story, reports that Vox Cinemas has pulled the movie without explanation. It also reported the UAE Media Council is reportedly objecting to the film, saying it is contrary to the values of the UAE.

Amy Pascal will never forget the world premiere of the first “Spider-Man” movie in 2002.
She was the head of Sony at the time, and was so worried that the film wouldn’t succeed she “spent the entire time in the ladies’ room crying,” Pascal recalled at the “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” premiere in Los Angeles.
“I sure did,” she continued. “I was terrified. “How do you know? You never know!”
But, she said, her fears disappeared on opening day: “It was one of the greatest days of my life.”
The film took in $100 million in its first three days. The first “Spider-Man,” starring Tobey Maguire Kirsten Dunst, Willem Dafoe, James Franco and Rosemary Harris and directed by Sam Raimi, went on to gross $825 million and spawned a decades-long franchise.

I vividly remember the first time I saw a Black woman in a toothpaste ad.
There I sat on our shag carpet, my goldfish behind me and a poster of The Fonz just steps away, taped to my bedroom door. I was watching TV and suddenly a beautiful woman in a short natural filled my screen, her teeth perfect and gleaming. I sat, mesmerized, and watched her shine. When her 30 seconds were up, I raced back to tell my mother: “Mamma, there was a Black woman on TV!”
All Gen X kids timed their day around Saturday morning cartoons, Zoom and Kids Are People Too. After, we rode our bikes till the streetlights came on. For Black Gen X, the jumble of Huffies, Big Wheels and metal skates on someone’s front yard let the little kids know it was time for Fat Albert, What’s Happening! or Good Times.

General Zod is back, in action figure form! At least, that’s what it felt like to Michael Shannon, who plays Zod in the Dceu. Shannon’s Zod faced off with Henry Cavill’s Superman in Man of Steel, which ended badly for the Kryptonian General. But thanks to Barry Allen’s time travel shenanigans in The Flash, Shannon gets to reprise his role as Zod. And the famously plain-speaking actor isn’t terribly excited about it.
When asked by Collider how he felt returning to play the baddie, Shannon did not hold back. “Yeah. I’m not gonna lie, it wasn’t quite satisfying for me, as an actor,” he admitted. “These multiverse movies are like somebody playing with action figures. It’s like, “Here’s this person. Here’s that person. And they’re fighting!” It’s not quite the in-depth character study situation that I honestly felt Man of Steel was.

Before the dawn of the Millennium, the prospect of a live-action Spider-Man meant Nicholas Hammond doing things slowly with a lot of string. The short-lived 1970s Spider-Man TV show perfectly illustrated that non-animated Spidey antics weren’t really achievable, although several – from James Cameron to Albert Pyun – tried to get projects spinning. But then came the arrival of CGI, and anything was possible…

After less than two weeks of release, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has surpassed the entire box office run of its predecessor, 2018’s Oscar-winning “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”
Over the weekend, the comic book sequel hit $226 million in North America and $390 million globally and now stands as Sony’s highest-grossing animated release in history. The original film, also a box office winner, tapped out with $190 in North America and $384 million globally. The sequel passed the domestic tally of the first in nine days and the global total in 12 days.
Despite competition from Paramount’s “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” which opened to $60 million and targets a similar audience of younger males, “Spider-Verse” added $55 million in its second weekend of domestic release, a decline of 55% from its huge $120 million debut.

After fans reported sound mixing issues in “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” Sony Pictures has sent an updated version of the film to movie theaters.
The complaints were mainly targeted at low audio levels during the introductory scene in the animated Spidey sequel, which centers on Hailee Steinfeld’s Spider-Woman character, Gwen Stacy.
While the sound issue was isolated to only a “handful of theaters,” a source close to the movie tells Variety that “all the prints” of the film have been updated, adding that it’s not entirely uncommon for distributors to send re-edited prints to exhibitors, “if the opportunity presents itself.”
On opening weekend, writer-producer Phil Lord weighed in on the sound issues, suggesting the following solution on Twitter: “#SpiderVerse friends! If you get to the theater early and you want a fun mission ask someone to check that the theater volume is set at reference (7)! If it sounds a bit quiet,...

Composer Daniel Pemberton pushed a few boundaries and “made something really creative and different” when he scored 2018’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” When he returned to score the sequel, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” he knew he would have to “push it as far as we can go.”
Pemberton says he had to build the score from the ground up, which was complicated. “You’re trying not to make a score that sounds like other film scores. You’re trying to invent your own language.”
Inventing that language took experimentation, research and failure. He explains, “I spent two years researching and developing this score, going through ideas, coming up with concepts and throwing them out.”
The first piece he wrote was a sketch that ended up becoming the cues that open and end the film. “You’re making a score that jumps around different worlds and characters, and everyone has got...

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has swung into theatres with aplomb, matching (if not beating) the excitement and love that the first movie, “Into the Spider-Verse,” garnered in 2018.
“Across the Spider-Verse” follows on from that first movie with Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) now a successful Spider-Man in his own universe. But another encounter with Hailee Steinfeld‘s Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman leads to Miles being launched into the Spider-Verse wherein he encounters a society of Spider-People, led by Oscar Isaac‘s Miguel O’Hara, and a new foe — Spot (Jason Schwartzman). The film ends on an outrageous cliffhanger, teasing the conclusion of the series with next year’s “Beyond the Spider-Verse.”
For now, however, fans will have to be satisfied with this excellent addition to the Spider-Man canon, which currently stands at an impressive 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the site’s critical consensus reading: “Just as visually dazzling and action-packed as its predecessor,...

This post contains light spoilers for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Among the many pleasures of the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was its celebration of all things Spider-Man. The 2018 film filled the screen with webheads, letting audiences delight in all of the variations of people and creatures who can do anything a spider can. Into the Spider-Verse made fast fans of Hailee Steinfeld’s Gwen Stacy aka Ghost Spider and Nicolas Cage‘s tough-talking Spider-Man Noir. Across the Spider-Verse continues this tradition with Oscar Isaac as conflicted antagonist Spider-Man 2099, but the real breakout is the movie’s loudest, rudest character: Spider-Punk.
Voiced by Daniel Kaluuya (in an accent closer to his native English), Spider-Punk is Hobie Brown, the Spider-Man of Earth-138. Draped in the trash aesthetic of 70s UK punk, Hobie battles against oppression with a commitment to anarchy and disruption. Spider-Verse directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers,...

[This story contains spoilers for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.]
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse star Daniel Kaluuya was, quite literally, born to play Hobie Brown/Spider-Punk. The Oscar winner and his anti-establishment Spider-Man character are both from Camden Town, a borough in North West London, and so Kaluuya’s voice performance in Sony’s smash hit took inspiration from the cast of characters he grew up around in the ‘90s and early 2000s.
Hobie was first introduced as a potential threat to Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), given that he had some form of an intimate relationship with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), but instead of another clichéd love triangle story, Hobie turned out to be the ultimate hero of Across the Spider-Verse. He not only helped Miles Morales escape the clutches of Miguel O’Hara (Oscar Isaac), but he also left his portal watch for Gwen to assemble a team that will hopefully rescue Miles from Earth-42 in 2024’s Beyond the Spider-Verse.
