- In addition to being a multi-instrumentalist, Pattirane spoke four languages fluently - English, Dutch, Ambonese and Bahasa Indonesian, and was proficient in Japanese. He was also an accomplished painter, sculptor, and photographer, although he never regarded these as anything more than hobbies.
- He was introduced to his wife Deanna Boyd in 1970 by Larry Rockwell, bass player for Sarah Vaughan at Brandy's Piano Bar in Manhattan. Rockwell was substituting for his regular bassist Reggie Workman, best known for his work with both John Coltrane and Art Blakey.
