Udayraj Pj’s debut feature film, Katu Pootha Malay, is in Tulu, experiments with voice-over narration and visuals, and intertwines both of them to create a structure where logic and meanings are culturally coded. It is a film that mines deep seams of memory to create a hybrid that intrinsically combines documentary-like aesthetics with prose-like narration. How the characters act each time that they have to confront challenges or how they solve their quandaries are not the narrative necessities that the film is interested in dealing with. Instead, we get more of a slice of the on-goings here and there while following the film’s central character, which is the house itself. At times, the scenes rapidly move from one scene or location to another, trying to give us the most teasing bits and pieces to keep us engrossed in the story. The layered storylines of each of the characters...

Teenagers are rebels, and it’s fairly obvious that in the years leading up to our adulthood, we do a lot of things we aren’t supposed to do. Sneaking out of the house, breaking curfews, partying with other rebels—you know the gist. But when someone spends the better part of their life watching a self-proclaimed prophet utter rubbish and taking them seriously, it’s trouble. Nurse Faure in the latest French crime thriller Anthracite is a person who has stopped being a normal person ever since she broke into Solal’s storage unit. Her actions led to the deaths of many innocent people, and they had massive consequences for the small, scenic town of Levionna.
Spoilers Ahead
Why Was Faure Influenced By Caleb?
Unlike other girls in Levionna, Faure didn’t directly get involved with the cult. A few months after Caleb was arrested, Solal completed his investigations and interviews.

The French crime thriller Anthracite concluded with the Ecrins cult leader Caleb Johansson and his illegitimate daughter and wife crushed under the mines. The anthracite mines have been the most prevalent part of the series, and Bachelard’s detonator left the town of Levionna covered in ruins. The discovery of the mysterious box which frightened the life out of a woman, suggests that a second season might be on the cards.
Spoilers Ahead
Is Someone Still Running The Ecrins Cult?
After Caleb’s arrest, nobody in the town thought that the cult would continue to operate. But Faure, in her own way, carried on his legacy in her own twisted way. Even after the deaths of Faure, Caleb, and their daughter, it’s still possible that there is an active member of the cult who’s still operating the cult, hiding in the shadows. Not to forget, even though Hari is in prison,...

After participating at various film festivals, Anand Ekarshi’s debut feature film, Aattam, is now available for streaming on Prime Video. It centers on a critical moment in the lives of 12 artists who have dedicated a significant portion of their careers to performing plays for a theatre troupe purely out of passion. Their harmonious camaraderie and existential pursuits face an unprecedented challenge when the sole female member of the team becomes a victim of sexual assault. As the plot unfolds, it delicately peels away the layers of each character, unveiling complexity imbued with both self-interest and compulsion. The characters’ actions and their decisions give rise to twists and turns in the tale, erupting from their insecurities and primal quest for survival. The chamber drama is tautly constructed, delving deep into the social, moral, and personal dimensions that define contemporary Indian society. The filmmaker throws us into a labyrinth of conflicting...

Academy Award-winning producer Daniel Dreifuss (“All Quiet on the Western Front”) has boarded “Red Men,” the latest feature from Mexico’s Hari Sama, best known for his lauded autobiographical pic “This is not Berlin,” which world premiered at Sundance in 2019.
Described as an “edgy and provocative coming-of-age story” about the life of Austrian expressionist painter Egon Schiele, “Red Men” hones in on Schiele’s role in reshaping European aesthetics through his intimate relationship with lover and muse, Dominik Van Osen.
Their bond inspired Schiele’s pioneering Expressionist style while also compelling the young artist to confront his sexually fluid identity amidst repressive laws banning homosexuality in turn-of-the-century Vienna. This romantic saga delves into the emotional complexities of two artistic companions turned lovers, which drove Egon’s artistic vision while he struggled to navigate society’s norms. People starting the movie Spaceman would be forgiven for thinking that their Netflix had glitched. Yes, we do see Adam Sandler’s character Jakub dressed in a space suit. But he’s not floating through the cosmos. He’s walking through a wooded stream, the greenery of the trees and bushes reflecting off his mask.
What the heck does this have to do with being a space man, one might ask? By the end of the movie, directed by Johan Renck and written by Colby Day (adapting the novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfař), Spaceman answers all your questions. Or rather, Jakub’s new friend, an alien spider named Hanuš, explains everything in the gentle, dulcet tones of Paul Dano.
Spaceman‘s strange, but ultimately clear, approach may frustrate some viewers. It may excite others, leaving them wanting to watch more sci-fi movies with a surrealist approach. Regardless of...

Devan’s directorial debut, Valatty, revolves around Tomy, a golden retriever with a golden heart and a lens through which he saw the word differently. His owner, Roy (Vijay Babu), loved him more than anything in the world and was looking for a suitable companion for his furry friend to breed with. Roy would die before he would make Tomy cross with dogs from lousy households. While Roy was searching the city to find a perfect partner for Tomy, he saw Amalu, a cocker spaniel that belonged to his neighbor, Saraswati (Mahima Nambiar). From the moment Tomy laid his eyes on Amalu, he lost his heart to her and began seeking excuses just to see her. Since Tomy was the coolest dog in society, he tried impressing Amalu with the tricks Roy taught him. Amalu also reciprocated his advances and fell for Tomy.

Manhwa, the general Korean term for comics, has existed since the 1970s. During the 1990s, when the ban on Japanese media was lifted, Korean comics became influenced by Japanese art style and storytelling to reach their current iteration. Undeniably, Japanese manga and Korean manhwa have a lot in common stylistically and narratively, and each has its rabid fanbase. The popularity of manhwa has been on a steady incline, mainly due to WebToon, a company started in 2004 by Naver Corporation that hosts a vast majority of the popular titles.
As a manga diehard, I was initially hesitant to approach manhwa, particularly with a preference for physical media. But with publishers' efforts to bring titles to print, I found myself attracted to the format both on and off the page. Still, it can be somewhat intimidating to approach, given the abundant amount of content out there.

Amidst a number of character deaths that took place in the second season of Apple TV+’s cosmic epic saga Foundation, the one that turned out to be the most unexpected was the death of Salvor Hardin. As a character, she was integral to the series, especially in the first season, where, as the warden of the planet Terminus, she helped avert the first crisis. By the end of the previous season, guided by the visions of her mother Gaal Dornick’s childhood, she had started on her journey towards Gaal’s home, the water planet Synnax. It was hinted that, like her mother, Salvor has been gifted with unique abilities of visions and psychic connections as well, which eventually come into play in the recently concluded second season with the introduction of mentalics and premonitions regarding The Mule.

“Foundation” fans shocked by the sheer number of twists and turns in the Apple TV+ show’s explosive Season 2 finale can thank David S. Goyer’s eagerness to surprise. After an entire planet had been destroyed and multiple characters had shockingly died, the final moments of the Season 2 finale revealed yet another major character death to really twist the knife.
“In the wake of ‘Game of Thrones,’ I feel like audiences have come to watch shows in a certain kind of way,” Goyer told TheWrap during an interview coordinated through his personal publicist. “So there’s an expectation that Episode 9 on these big shows, just a ton of stuff will happen, and then Episode 10 will be a coda. So I’m cognizant of that as a viewer and what you don’t expect is that 10 minutes before the end of Episode 10, this other massive thing happens.”

One of the major changes utilized in AppleTV+’s Foundation, as compared to Isaac Asimov’s novel series of the same name, was the introduction of the genetic Cleon dynasty. In the far future, human beings have spread throughout the cosmos and have managed to establish a galactic empire. To avoid confusion and the possibilities of family feuds and infighting resulting from a claim to the throne, the last emperor, Cleon I, decided to initiate the ultimate form of autocracy by cloning himself through generations and forever being the only one to rule over trillions in succession.
To employ the concept of cloning even more brilliantly, at any given era, three clones of Cleon I at different stages of their lives were assigned as Emperors. Brother Dawn, the youngest, who learns about the intricacies of being a ruler and prepares himself for taking the reins in the future; Brother Day,...

From unique bio-organisms, hybrid monstrosities, and sentient androids, Isaac Asimov’s cosmic universe is filled with archetypal creations that have influenced the lore of a number of other franchises. One of the major factions of Asimov’s verse, the Mentalics, was introduced in the second season of Apple TV+’s Foundation, adapted from the novel series of the same name. Mentalics are psychically enhanced beings who can communicate, project, and interact through telepathy. Through Gaal Dornick’s central role in the narrative of the interplanetary saga, the Mentalics are explored further, and their role will be integral in the upcoming world-building of Foundation, including the arrival of the series’ most important figure, the Mule. Let’s take a look at the connection established with the unique community and what role mental health professionals might play in the future.

There is a certain saying in theological studies that talks about accepting the situations one cannot change, having the courage to change what can be changed, and having the wisdom to know the difference between both situations. The precepts of Foundation are by no means grounded in theology, yet Isaac Asimov’s masterwork heavily hinges on these principles, as shown throughout the first season of Apple TV+’s adaptation of the novel series and also in the recently concluded second season as well.
The first season of Foundation primarily dealt with the conflict between brilliant mathematician Hari Seldon and the genetic Cleon dynasty, the rulers of the Galactic Empire, stemming from the fact that Hari’s calculations based on psychohistory predicted the downfall of the Empire. As a deterrent, after being banished to planet Terminus, Hari created the Foundation, which is an institute to preserve the essentials of human civilization...

The second season of Apple TV+’s cosmic epic, Foundation, introduced new characters, new stakes, and new revelations, and as it concluded with quite an eventful finale, Hari Seldon’s masterplan was unfurled in a cataclysmic reckoning. Given the basis of psychohistory and Hari’s initial perception of human existence, which dictates that the impact of individuals doesn’t matter much in the grand scheme of things, it is little wonder that not all the characters viewers grew fond of will make it to the next season. In fact, these last couple of episodes of the second season take out more characters from the planetary saga than the first season managed to do. We would like to take a look back at the ending of the second season to assess the tally of the characters who might return for a third season and those who won’t.

The marketing material for Foundation season 2 makes no attempt to hide the fact that the show is in store for a big time jump. While this would be a major twist for many other TV shows, for Foundation‘s eons-spanning narrative it’s pretty standard. Not only did season 1 feature multiple time jumps, but the final moments of its finale actually bring viewers up to roughly 138 years in the future when season 2 is set to begin. That just happens to be the amount of time it takes for both Salvor Hardin (Leah Harvey) and Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell) to reach Gaal’s native planet Synnax.

The Foundation has entered its religious phase, promulgating the Church of Seldon throughout the Outer Reach and inciting the Second Crisis: war with Empire. The mission statement for Foundation, the Apple TV+ sci-fi epic based on Isaac Asimov’s novels, is pretty clear in season 2. As the season’s trailer ominously intones, “this is an age of darkness.” That’s right: it’s time for war.
But one needn’t have watched the season 2 trailer nor have read Asimov’s books to know that the confrontation between the Galactic Empire and Hari Seldon’s Foundation was inevitable. One need to have only listened to Seldon himself. The mythical psychohistorian played by Jared Harris revealed at the end of Foundation season 1 that his ragtag group had successfully conquered their First Crisis and the Second Crisis was on its way. And it’s something that Harris hammered home in speaking with Den of Geek prior to the release of season 2 on July 14.

Victors write histories, while visionaries shape the future. The renowned science-fiction writer Isaac Asimov’s magnum opus, the millennia-spanning cosmic epic that is known as the “Foundation Saga,” delineates this aspect by weaving an intricate tale that encompasses a world-building of galactic scale across several timelines, peppered with adventure, sociopolitical intrigue, and religious intrigue. Released as a volume in 1951, the scope and scale of Foundation were so grand that it later went on to inspire iconic space epics like Dune, Star Wars, and many others.
Apple TV+’s series adaptation of the same name as the original Foundation saga released its first season in 2021, which, with its minor alteration in storytelling by adapting significant real-world allusions, has garnered praise from audiences and critics alike. The epic scale of the source material has been duly respected in the series with its sprawling cosmic landscape, character designs, scores, and the ambitiousness of the script.

Isaac Asimov’s Foundation seemed like a near impossible work to try and adapt. But somehow David S Goyer has managed to do that in impressive fashion. Supported by a wonderful cast that includes Lee Pace, Jared Harris, and Laura Birn, Foundation has managed to carve itself a place in the world of Sci-Fi and Fantasy. And, as shows like Game of Thrones and Star Trek have proven, there’s plenty of worth in those genres. With Apple’s premium service losing its main flagship show in Ted Lasso, I find it interesting that they’re really striving for Foundation to be that for them. Whether that happens remains to be seen, but the creators have put in the work to provide an improvement over the first season and a clear path towards an intriguing future. Few films in recent memory have received as much organic social media buzz as Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie.” A steady stream of leaked pictures, reports of pink paint shortages, and cast anecdotes about delightful on-set insanity have turned Gerwig’s maximalist take on the iconic Mattel toy line into one of the most anticipated movie events of the summer.
Fans are closer than ever to seeing the film in its entirety when it hits theaters on July 21 — and cast members seem to be relishing their last few opportunities to hype up the film. One of the most highly anticipated films of the year released its trailer this week. “Killers of the Flower Moon” is currently slated for an Oct. 6 release before eventually streaming exclusively on Apple TV+. The film, directed by Martin Scorsese, is based on the 2017 true crime book “Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI” by David Grann. It tells the story of murders that took place in the 1920s in Osage Country, Oklahoma. After oil was found on the land of wealthy Osage people, they were brutally killed, presumably for access to their land and oil. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser, John Lithgow, and more.
