Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has been criticized for his remarks in a case about the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. The criticism stems from Thomas’ questioning and his wife’s alleged involvement in the conspiracy surrounding the events leading up to the riot.
In the Supreme Court hearing on a case related to the Capitol riot, Thomas raised the question of whether the federal government had previously charged individuals with obstruction of an official proceeding in the context of violent protests. This statement received backlash on social media, with some critics interpreting it as downplaying the severity of the insurrection.
Former CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin criticized Thomas, saying that his wife’s alleged connection to the conspiracy influenced his handling of the case. Thomas’ wife, Virginia Thomas, had conversations with former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, where she urged him to overturn the 2020 election results. Virginia raised funds...

Dark Sky Films' Laced Coming to VOD + Digital Platform January 12: "Laced is a modern thriller/drama in the vein of Hitchcockian classics like Dial M for Murder and Rear Window. Set in a single location, the piece explores the claustrophobic nature of young love strung with toxicity and lies, and the cyclical nature of violence.
Official Film Synopsis:In a remote cabin on the evening of a record-breaking blizzard, a young woman plots to poison her abusive husband in order to end their toxic relationship once and for all. When the poison fails to kill him, she not only has to quickly concoct a backup plan, but also contend with her husband’s increasing suspicion that his intensifying illness isn’t wholly accidental. And with the unexpected arrival of her brother, her carefully crafted scheme threatens to spiral ever further out of control. Now trapped together as the snow piles up,...

CNN and CEO Chris Licht came in for ferocious criticism over the chaotic town hall the cable news network held with former president Donald Trump on Wednesday.
Amid his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump sat down with CNN This Morning anchor Kaitlan Collins at the event held in New Hampshire. The 70-minute town hall was populated by mostly Trump supporters and likely Republican voters, and the former president was able to dominate proceedings, overwhelming Collins who tried in vain to correct Trump’s statements and falsehoods about issues including the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, a federal abortion ban, immigration and the war in Ukraine.
A particularly shocking exchange occurred over E. Jean Carroll, who had this week been awarded $5 million in damages after a New York jury held Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation against the writer. Among other things, Trump once again claimed he did not know who Carroll...

“CNN This Morning” host Don Lemon is pushing back against the criticism that the cable network skews liberal.
“Late Show” host Stephen Colbert asked Lemon during Monday’s episode about his new boss, CEO Chris Licht, who has made sweeping programming changes at CNN. Prior to taking over for Jeff Zucker in May, Licht coincidentally served as showrunner and executive producer on “The Late Show.”
“He would stand right over there and hit the applause sign before we went to commercial — basically all his job was. Now he has a really hard job, running CNN,” Colbert said. “The word on the street is you guys aren’t allowed to be liberal anymore. Is that the case?”
“I don’t think we ever were liberal,” Lemon replied.
“What?” Colbert said. “That’s not me saying that, that’s the people out there saying he’s not letting you be liberal anymore.

To CNN employees, the most surprising thing about the channel’s morning show announcement was how surprising it was.
CNN’s culture has, for years, been leaky, and big news has often found a way to trickle out. The morning shake-up, which will see Don Lemon depart 10 p.m. for the mornings, joined by veteran anchor Poppy Harlow and White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins, came as a shock to two CNN sources The Hollywood Reporter spoke to (some CNN staff were convinced Lemon would be shown the door by new management).
But maybe it shouldn’t have. Licht, after all, told CNN employees on a daily editorial call after the cancellation of Reliable Sources that they should tune out reporting on the channel, and that no one outside of himself and a select group of CNN executives had any insight into their programming plans and strategy.

In his first major analyst hire since joining CNN, CEO Chris Licht said Tuesday that the cable news channel had hired John Miller, a former TV correspondent who also had two long stints with the NYPD, to serve as its chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst.
Miller was most recently the NYPD’s deputy commissioner for intelligence and counterterrorism, and retired from the department earlier this summer. He had previously worked as the NYPD’s chief spokesperson in the 1990s, and also worked as a spokesperson for the LAPD and the FBI.

John Harwood, a White House correspondent who joined CNN in 2020, is leaving the network — the latest exit in recent weeks as executives appear to be mulling the news outlet’s roster in the aftermath of corporate parent Discovery’s acquisition of WarnerMedia.
Harwood, a veteran Beltway journalist whose career has taken him to The Wall Street Journal and CNBC, announced his exit Friday afternoon via social media. “today’s my last day at CNN. proud of the work,” he wrote on Twitter. “look forward to figuring out what’s next.”

CNN White House correspondent John Harwood said that Friday will be his last day at the network.
Harwood wrote on Twitter, “Personal news: today’s my last day at CNN … proud of the work … thanks to my colleagues… i’ve been lucky to serve the best in American media – St. Petersburg Times, WSJ, Nyt, the NBC family, CNN … look forward to figuring out what’s next.”
Harwood did not give a reason for his exit, but he has been particularly outspoken about Donald Trump and what he sees as Trump’s threat to democracy, even as the network’s new leadership has been moving toward a more neutral tone.
Harwood did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A spokesperson for the network said, “We appreciate John’s work covering the White House, and we wish him all the best.”

Don Lemon and Jim Acosta, two of CNN’s most opinionated and outspoken on-air journalists, are expected to stay at the network despite its new direction to a less overtly left-wing bent, an individual with knowledge of the network’s plan told TheWrap.
Since the sudden, inelegant firing of chief media correspondent Brian Stelter this week and the cancellation of his show, “Reliable Sources,” the CNN newsroom has been abuzz with speculation over who might be next to go, as the message has spread that the network is going more middle of the road.
The rumor mill has understandably turned to Lemon, who in recent years has been overtly opinionated and politically progressive in his anchoring of the primetime news slot — whether discussing the Black Lives Matter movement, misdoings of the Trump administration or the Supreme Court overturning of Roe v. Wade.

According to sources who were present, Licht told CNN employees at Friday’s well-attended editorial meeting, “There will be moves you may not agree with or understand.” Some took that to mean they may not like some of the changes.
He added, “I want to acknowledge to everyone that this is a time of change. I know that it is unsettling.”
Licht also expressed some irritation over some media reports about CNN’s plans, characterizing them as incorrect assumptions. The exec stressed to staff that those fluid plans are only known by a few in CNN management’s inner circle.

It didn’t take long for the job offers to start rolling in for Brian Stelter – and those were some of the better attempted conservative Twitter dunks on the “Reliable Sources” host the day his ouster from CNN was announced.
Greg Gutfeld, host and ringleader of Fox News’ after-dark scrum “Gutfeld!,” tweeted mere minutes following the news break Thursday, and kept it simple: “Yo @brianstelter – my show is hiring,” said the host of what is now the highest-rated show in late night.

No doubt the Gutfeld crew would, indeed, welcome Stelter to the fray, where he’s been mercilessly mocked over the years (despite a dearth of words that rhyme with “Stelter”).

Brian Stelter had planned to announce his exit from CNN and the cancellation of his show, “Reliable Sources,” which he’s hosted for nine years, on the air on Sunday, according to an individual with knowledge of the show.
It was not to be. The news leaked on Thursday and once again the CNN newsroom is aflutter with anxiety and rumor: What is new chairman and CEO Chris Licht’s plan for the future of the news network? Why would Stelter, a respected media journalist, get the boot along with his show? Who else is at risk to get the ax after Stelter and, last week, legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin? Brian Stelter is out as CNN’s chief media correspondent and host of “Reliable Sources,” which will be canceled upon his departure — an expected move, given an expressed desire by the network’s new leadership to move away from opinion-based news programming.

The venerated magazine fired the contributor and Emmy winner in November 2020, while CNN, at the time run by Jeff Zucker, didn’t officially suspend or...

CNN and analyst Jeffrey Toobin have parted ways, with both the longtime legal analyst and writer for the news network since 2002 informing staff that he would be exiting.
“Dear Friends, I wanted to let you know that after twenty years I’ve decided to leave CNN after my vacation,” Toobin announced on Twitter Friday. “It was great to spend my last day on air, like so many before, with my pals at Sit Room, AC360 and Don Lemon Tonight. It’s been a privilege (and fun) being your colleague. The work of CNN is enormously important, and I know you’ll continue doing it with the same passion and intelligence as always.”
He went on to give a heads-up on his next book — about the Oklahoma City bombing — which comes out next year.

Jeffrey Toobin, the veteran legal analyst and writer who has opined on cases and the courts for CNN since 2002, appears to have offered his last testimony at the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed news outlet.
In a letter sent Friday to colleagues, Toobin revealed that he is parting ways with CNN, which has backed him in good times and bad. CNN placed Toobin on leave in the fall of 2020 after he acknowledged exposing himself during a video call with staffers from The New Yorker, where he had been working since 1993. Toobin and the Conde Nast publication cut ties, but CNN put its contributor back on the air in June of 2021 after a months-long leave. When he reappeared, he told CNN anchor Alisyn Camerota that “I hope to be a better person off camera as well as on camera.”

But first, a few words about 17th-century Dutch horticulture.
Back in the early 1600s, for reasons nobody to this day fully understands, the Dutch went nuts over tulips. In fact, demand for the blossom grew so irrationally exuberant, flower merchants began trading them at outrageously inflated prices, triggering the world’s first speculative bubble. At Tulip Mania’s height, a single bulb was worth more than the average Dutch house.
But then, in 1637, as was inevitable, the bottom fell out of the market.

Any limited series created by Ryan Murphy creates controversy, excitement and awards chatter. Six Emmy wins (out of 36 nominations) cement his status as a perpetual contender. His entry this year, the FX limited series “Impeachment: American Crime Story” checked all the Murphy boxes as he zeroed in on the relationship between President Bill Clinton (Clive Owen) and White House intern Monica Lewinsky (Beanie Feldstein).
The cast is stocked with such Emmy favorites such as Sarah Paulson, a winner for her performance as Marcia Clark in Murphy’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson, who portrays the diabolical Linda Tripp; multiple Emmy winner Edie Falco who embodies an explosive Hillary Clinton and multiple winner Margo Martindale (“The Americans”), who is smarmy literary agent Lucianne Goldberg.
The arc of the limited series based on Jeffrey Toobin’s book traces not only the ill-considered, ill-fated Clinton-Lewinsky affair, but also Tripp’s masterful manipulation of Lewinsky.

Though an enormous number of beloved, bygone TV shows have been revived for the streaming era, there isn’t a whole lot of precedent for this kind of revival in the area of sketch comedy. It makes sense: There are fewer hit sketch comedy shows than straight sitcoms or dramas, and many of the most famous lineups would now be incomplete (like “Sctv” or “Monty Python’s Flying Circus”), or have featured too many incarnations to reunite properly (like the many casts of “Saturday Night Live”).
There’s also the matter of how sketch comedy is often fueled by youthful vitality. “The Carol Burnett Show,” for example, was a huge 11-season hit in the ’60s and ’70s, but a 1991 revival quickly floundered despite arriving just 13 years after its original finale—about the same amount of time that’s elapsed since Canadian comedy troupe the Kids in the Hall last appeared on television.

After a leaked draft opinion all but confirmed that the U.S. Supreme Court is working toward abolishing the right to an abortion, CNN decided for some reason to bring Jeffrey Toobin on the air to talk about it.
And a big topic at hand: Whether or not the leak itself, rather than the decision, is bad for the Supreme Court.
Of course, the cable network was thoroughly mocked by frustrated supporters of Roe v Wade who saw both the decision to have Toobin on, and what the discussion focused on, as a sad failure on CNN’s part.
Toobin appeared on “Anderson Cooper 360” in a segment excerpted and shared by CNN media reporter Brian Stelter. The excerpt shared by Stelter focused on a peculiar element of the matter: The leak itself.
"There has never been a leak of a vote, much less an actual opinion, much less in a case of this significance,...

Politico obtained a draft opinion that shows that the Supreme Court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade, giving states the power to ban abortion.
The leak of a draft opinion is extremely rare for the court, which has held its proceedings as secret until their rulings are announced.
“Roe was egregiously wrong from the start,” Justice Samuel Alito writes in the draft. Instead, he wrote that it should be up to “the people’s representatives” to decide. States could then enforce abortion bans or pass new ones.
Politico also posted the complete draft opinion — which you can read here — which indicates that it was circulated on Feb. 10.
The court’s opinion is not final until it is made public and published, something that is not expected until late June or even early July, near the end of its term when it has traditionally released its rulings in the most controversial cases.

Chris Cuomo wants CNN parent WarnerMedia to keep paying him even though he no longer works there.
The former CNN primetime anchor alleged in an arbitration filing Wednesday that his career has suffered damages in excess of $125 million, and suggested CNN had allowed several of his one-time colleagues to violate standards and practices in a bid to keep viewership. The anchor also said his firing by CNN late last year cost him nearly $15 million in salary that he would have earned if he had served out his last contract.
In the filing, Cuomo’s attorneys argued that CNN favorites like Don Lemon and Jake Tapper, as well as analyst Jeffrey Toobin, had potentially violated the news outlet’s practices over the years, but were not punished for doing so. “As long as CNN’s ratings would not be hurt, [former CNN Worldwide President Jeff] Zucker and [former CNN Chief Marketing Officer Allison] Gollust were more than willing to overlook major transgressions by CNN personalities,...

Exclusive: After months of legal anticipation following his December 2021 firing by Jeff Zucker, Chris Cuomo has just launched the official opening salvo in what looks to be protracted battle with CNN for not only $125 million in cash, but his character and family drama as well.
“As a result of Turner’s indefensible choice to unceremoniously fire him, Cuomo has been damaged in countless ways,” states a demand for arbitration filed Wednesday from Cuomo’s Freedman + Taitelman Llp and Clayman Rosenberg Kirshner & Linder Llp attorneys.
“Cuomo has had his journalistic integrity unjustifiably smeared, making it difficult if not impossible for Cuomo to find similar work in the future and damaging him in amounts exceeding $125 million, which includes not only the remaining salary owed under the Agreement, but future wages lost as a result of CNN’s efforts to destroy his reputation in violation of the Agreement,” the filing adds. “Cuomo now...

The search to replace Jeff Zucker is over. Multiple outlets are reporting that Chris Licht, the former “Morning Joe” producer who currently runs “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” will be placed in charge of the cable network when Discovery merges with WarnerMedia later this year. Licht is expected to be named head of news for the new entity, Warner Bros. Discovery. The position will put him in command of CNN, but he will not run the conglomerate’s sports division, as Zucker did.
The move comes at a tumultuous moment for CNN after a 2021 that saw the cable network bogged down with scandals from both its on-air talent and c-suite executives. Legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin was suspended for eight months for inappropriately exposing himself on a Zoom call. Primetime anchor Chris Cuomo followed that by secretly advising his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, on his sexual harassment...

There's no need to wonder if American Crime Story will be cancelled just yet. The series has already been renewed for a fourth season on FX. The show's second season, which aired in 2018, performed very well for the cable channel. How well will season three do in the ratings? Stay tuned.
A true-crime drama series, American Crime Story dramatizes a notable event in United States history in a self-contained season. Subtitled Impeachment, season three stars Sarah Paulson, Annaleigh Ashford, Judith Light, Beanie Feldstein, Clive Owen, Margo Martindale, Billy Eichner, Cobie Smulders, Edie Falco, Taran Killam, Colin Hanks, Mira Sorvino, Elizabeth Reaser, and Anthony Green. Initial Nielsen ratings for FX’s Sept. 7 debut of “Impeachment: American Crime Story” dropped significantly from earlier premieres of Ryan Murphy’s “American Crime Story” anthology five and three years ago, respectively.
According to Nielsen Live+Same Day ratings, the “Impeachment” launch drew 916,000 viewers and a rating of 0.24 in the key adults 18-49 demographic.
The series failed to come close to the record-setting numbers achieved by the first season of the show “The People v. O.J. The former garnered over 5 million viewers and a rating of 2.0 in the key demo, while the second obtained 2.22 million viewers and a 0.72 rating in the key demo. Both previous debuts topped all other cable telecasts the night they aired, while “Impeachment” was in the fourth slot.

Hulu customers expecting to stream “Impeachment: American Crime Story” today — or anytime soon — will be disappointed: The FX limited series isn’t on the Disney-controlled streaming platform’s on-demand streaming tiers.
Instead, “Impeachment,” a retelling of the notorious Monica Lewinsky-Bill Clinton saga from more than two decades ago, will be headed to Netflix sometime in 2022. The first episode of the series aired Tuesday night on FX.
Ordinarily, episodes of new FX original series and new seasons of existing series that premiere on FX and Fxx are available the day after on Hulu (starting at 3:01 a.m. Pt) streaming packages with ads and without ads. Hulu just announced a $1-per-month price hike for the two on-demand plans, starting next month.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details of tonight’s Impeachment: American Crime Story debut episode.
“Make her stay to watch,” a trapped Monica Lewinsky tells FBI agents of Linda Tripp in a January 1998 Ritz-Carlton hotel room after being snared mere hours before an unknowing Bill Clinton was scheduled to sit down before lawyers. “I want that treacherous bitch to see what she’s done to me,” the Beanie Feldstein portrayed Lewinsky adds as Sarah Paulson’s Tripp stares in something resembling shame in the real life scene depicted in the opening minutes of the opening ‘Exile’ episode of Impeachment: American Crime Story tonight on FX.
Executive produced by Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Paulson, Alexis Martin Woodall, Brad Falchuk and Sarah Burgess, with Lewinsky herself serving as a producer too, the latest iteration of the Emmy-winning franchise returned with more of the best of the worst of the 1990s.

Spoiler Alert: This review contains details of FX’s Impeachment: American Crime Story which debuts on September 7.
Ultimately David Geffen said it best and worst of Bill and Hillary Clinton: “Everybody in politics lies, but they do it with such ease, it’s troubling.”
Debuting on September 7, FX’s Impeachment: American Crime Story is an indictment of those lies, their corresponding hypocrisies and the people often treated as cannon fodder by the ruthlessly ambitious First Couple.
Penned by playwright Sarah Burgess and based on Jeffrey Toobin’s 1999 book A Vast Conspiracy, the latest 10-episode installment of the Acs franchise executive produced by Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson strives to keep the spotlight away from the Clintons. Instead, the focus is on the trials and tribulations of the once infamous Paula Jones, Linda Tripp and Monica Lewinsky, with the latter serving as a producer on the pandemic-delayed project.

There’s no question that Impeachment, the latest season of FX’s acclaimed American Crime Story anthology series, has expended a great deal of care and money toward re-creating the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal. Every 1990s period prop is arranged just so (the SlimFast shakes! But less clear, especially at first, is what all this effort is for. Even as the season zeroes in on the finer details of the story (drawing primarily from Jeffrey Toobin’s book A Vast Conspiracy), it struggles ...

“Impeachment,” the latest outing in FX’s evolving “American Crime Story” universe, charts the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal that rocked the nation in the 1990s. In the limited series debuting on September 7, “Booksmart” star Beanie Feldstein plays Monica Lewinsky opposite an unrecognizable Clive Owen as Bill Clinton, with Sarah Paulson, Annaleigh Ashford, Margo Martindale, Edie Falco, Billy Eichner, and Cobie Smulders rounding out the cast as the various figures involved in the controversy. Although “Impeachment: American Crime Story” has been described as being based on Jeffrey Toobin’s book, “A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President,” the greatest source the show had, the stars and producers noted during the Television Critics Assn. press tour panel for the show, was Monica Lewinsky herself.

She added that the producers “would go through the scripts with [Monica] and she would give all her feedback and her notes, and by the time it got to me, I was sure that everything in there was something that she felt comfortable with, she thought was real to her life, and felt represented her.

Cobie Smulders will now play Ann Coulter in “Impeachment: American Crime Story” after Betty Gilpin, who was originally set in the role, exited the cast due to scheduling complications during the pandemic.
Smulders is the newest addition to the cast of this season. This news comes just after FX released the official trailer on Wednesday. Smulders is known for playing Robin in the popular CBS sitcom “How I Met Your Mother” and was most recently seen as Dex Parios in “Stumptown,” which was canceled by ABC in Sept. 2020.
Gilpin shared her regrets about having to leave the role of Coulter on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in June. She called the situation “another Covid disappointment” before performing a comedic impression of the conservative media pundit reciting the children’s rhyme “Milk Milk Lemonade.” Gilpin said the impression took “a year [of] listening to Ann Coulter audiobooks” to perfect.
