Gaurav Madan’s critically acclaimed Barah by Barah (2024) has been released in theatres after making its rounds at various film festivals. It is set in the holy city of Benares, considered the focal point of the Hindu faith. People usually visit the ghats to undergo ceremonial tonsuring, seek absolution from sins, or culminate their cycle of birth, among other reasons. It is a place that displays the universal spectacle of life’s journey. Though such interplay between life and revelation remains at the narrative’s core, Barah by Barah is more about our collective inability to be with the moment and the world as it is. As a tale of a family caught between the crux and tradition, the film gives us a deeper understanding of the world. It is also about the fluctuating bonds and distances among family members. The film’s pace remains languid throughout its around two-hour run-time.

Mami Select: Filmed on iPhone is an initiative undertaken by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (Mami) to make short films shot on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The five filmmakers chosen for this virtuous deed were Prateek Vats, Saurav Rai, Faraz Ali, Archana Atul Phadke, and Saumyananda Sahi. These filmmakers were mentored by veteran filmmakers like Vishal Bhardwaj, Vikramaditya Motwane and Rohan Sippy. The five short films are tales of individuals who deal with the challenging lives of the marginalized, the vulnerable, the impoverished, the alienated, and the troubled. From the confines of a garment factory to the narrow alleys of a daily market in a rural town to the snow-clad locales of Kashmir to the dunes of Rajasthan to the bustling metropolis, they present vivid characters whose individual problems are no less vital and compelling. Welcome to ElectionLine’s A View From Abroad series, in which we speak with media figures who don’t live in America but keep a close eye on its politics. Every few weeks, these smart observers will provide a unique perspective on what promises to be a fraught and unpredictable campaign for the White House. This week, our interview is with Richard Madan, the award-winning Washington D.C. correspondent for Canada’s CBC News.
When Richard Madan and his crew get out of Washington D.C. to talk to American voters, they sometimes stick a tiny Canadian flag on the viewfinder of their camera. It’s a signal to contributors that they come in peace and Canadian pleasantries — and, by and large, it’s effective.
“When you go into these unfriendly crowds, the second I say we’re Canadian television, any animosity instantly disappears. Generally speaking, Americans have positive views of Canadians,...

Through “Jubilee,” Vikramaditya Motwane and Soumik Sen were able to portray on screen such an old romance that is rare to come across. Looking into each other’s eyes, having long conversations, longing for the love of their lives, and realizing that person is their one. This kind of romance has been seen and cherished for the longest time in the film industry, which began in an era that was subsequently dubbed the golden period of Hindi cinema. Kudos to the creators, writers, and director for not just portraying this kind of romance in films; it seems to work in the show “Jubilee,” The same kind of romance mirrors in the actual show, where one can see the love oozing out of Sumitra’s eyes for Jamshed or the love Jay had for Niloufer.
Jay and Niloufer meet in Lucknow, where he decides to spend some nights with her on the recommendation of Jamshed Khan.

“Jubilee” by Vikramaditya Motwane and Soumik Sen brought to the screen a period that was considered the golden era in the history of Hindi cinema. The country has just gotten its independence, but there was still the scar of the partition that people were carrying, having lost everything in the great upheaval. Many who came from what became Pakistan had to end up living in different parts of the country as refugees until they were assimilated as Indian citizens. Many moved to Mumbai in the hope of scoring a job in the film industry. Binod was already a well-established man in the industry, he had a stable job at the Roy Talkies, and he was the best right-hand man the studio head honcho could have asked for. Srikant Roy was the head of Roy Talkies, and his search for a leading man had just come to an end, and he...

Part I of “Jubilee” ended with Madan Kumar creating issues with the muhurat of Jay Khanna’s first film. Madan Kumar has had a tiff with Shamsher Walia over the latter’s comments on his debut film. With Sumitra Kumari joining hands with the Russians to bring down Madan Kumar, she has made her choice as a co-owner of the Roy Talkies. Though Srikant allows Madan to work with Jay Khanna, he warns him that Sumitra knows of his involvement in Jamshed’s death, and she will come after him with guns blazing. The show ended at a point where it was made clear that Jay and Madan Kumar would reach a point where they would become not just professional rivals but rivals on a personal basis as well. Created by Vikramaditya Motwane and Soumik Sen, “Jubilee” is set in the post-independence era when Indian cinema was being refurbished for a better viewing experience.

“Jubilee,” created and directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, is all about the golden period of Hindi cinema when the studios ruled the film industry. Our country had just become a newly independent nation, and was trying to fit in an era where we had to choose between being on the Soviet side or being with the Americans when it comes to political ideology; that would also set the tone for the kind of cinema that would be produced by the Hindi film industry. Amidst all this, we get to see people struggling to survive and, at the same time, people being recognized by becoming overnight sensations. There is Binod Das, aka Madan Kumar, who became the most sought-after actor from Roy Talkies after a hit film. From that point of his life there was no turning back for him. But there is a history behind his transformation into Madan Kumar from...
