Rise director Cédric Klapisch with Anne-Katrin Titze on seeing dance at 14: “My parents brought me … It was the time of Merce Cunningham, Carolyn Carlson - they were the hit dancers in the Seventies.”
Classical ballet dancer Elise (Marion Barbeau) in Cédric Klapisch’s riveting and dynamic Rise (co-written with Santiago Amigorena) suffers an ankle injury during a performance of La Bayadère right after having spotted her boyfriend and dance partner with another woman. With her future unclear on all fronts, Elise rises out of the ashes with the support of a number of illustrious characters in her life. Choreographer Hofesh Shechter (and Rise composer with Thomas Bangalter) playing a version of himself makes very clear that dance can have many forms. There is physiotherapist Yann (François Civil) who is overcoming his own heartbreak, and friend Sabrina (Souheila Yacoub) who also had to transition out of the field of dance.

It's been more than 10 years since a revival of Fiddler on the Roof opened on Broadway, so tradition (get it?) foretells that it's time for another. A new production of the musical starring Danny Burstein as Tevye will start performances in November 2015. Bartlett Sher will direct, with music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick. Sher directed Burstein in the recent revivals of South Pacific and Golden Boy, for which Burstein was nominated for Tonys, and in the original production of Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Five-time Tony nominee Burstein is currently appearing as Herr Schultz in Cabaret.

Merchants Of Bollywood, London
This kaleidoscopic dance and music chronicle of the history of Bollywood has been touring the world since 2005, but it makes its first appearance at the Peacock this month. Written and directed by Toby Gough, it is based on the story of the Merchant family, a dynasty of choreographers who led the evolution of Bollywood into one of the world's largest film industries. It's nominally based around the story of a feud between a young woman and her grandfather as she sets out to pursue a career in the movies, but the story is simply an excuse for the all-singing, dancing, acting cast to cull the best of Bollywood style. Choreography is by Vaibhavi Merchant in a mixture of folk, classical and disco sounds and among the song list are blockbuster hits from the Bollywood back catalogue that include Lagaan, Devdas, Musafir and Dhoom.
