- Samir Naqqash was born in 1938 in Baghdad, Iraq. He died on July 6, 2004 in Petah Tikva, Israel.
- Emigrated to Israel with his family at age 13, but never felt comfortable there, and always viewed himself primarily as an Iraqi. Earned a doctorate in Arabic literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
- Israeli author and playwright who wrote almost exclusively in Arabic of his native Iraq. Achieved wide-ranging acclaim in the Arab world and among the Iraqi exile community, and received numerous literary awards and critical acclaim, but received little financial success or notoriety outside of Iraq, because most of his books were not translated into Hebrew or English.
