China has struggled to get viewers back into cinemas this week, but the Shanghai Intl. Film Festival (Siff) has found a way to break through: screen all eight of the “Harry Potter” franchise films in a row, with limited seating due to Covid-19 distancing measures, and watch the public duke it out for the privilege to attend.
They must be doing something right in their selection, however: the festival sold 108,000 tickets in the first ten minutes of online sales. That contrasted with only slow box office in commercial cinemas which resumed operating on Monday.
Siff is set to run July 25 to Aug. 2 with an eclectic selection shown in a mix of screenings with a live audience, outdoor viewings and online streaming.
More than 400 films will screen in 29 designated cinemas, including Jordan Peele’s “Us,” a 4K restoration of “Apocalypse Now,” and “1917,” the only studio film new to Chinese audiences among the various offerings.

Only this week officially confirmed as going ahead, the Shanghai International Film Festival has announced some of the first titles to be selected.
The festival will run 25 July to Aug. 2 combining a mixture of theatrical screenings in front of live audiences, outdoor screenings and online streaming. It will include a conference series known as the Golden Goblet Forum, its International Film and TV Market, a Belt and Road Film Week, and the Siff project market.
Cinemas in China only begin to operate from Monday 20 July. And the festival will be expected to play its part in minimizing the spread of the coronavirus. There will be no festival guests from overseas and tickets will only be sold online, starting from July 20 through vendor Taopiaopiao.

Agnieszka Holland’s film has won the top prize, while Icarus. The Legend of Mietek Kosz scooped the Silver Lions, and Corpus Christi snagged Best Director and Best Screenplay. Jury headed by Cristian Mungiu selects winners.
Pedicab, directed by the Philippines’ Paolo Villaluna, won best film at the Shanghai International Film Festival’s Golden Goblet awards on Sunday night.
The film (pictured) follows a diverse group of people travelling by pedicab from Manila to the perceived paradise of their home province.
The Golden Goblets jury, headed by Cristian Mungiu, awarded the grand jury prize to Yellow, from Iranian filmmaker Mostafa Taghizad’h, which also picked up best actress for Sareh Bayat’s performance.
Best director went to Polish filmmaker Maciej Pieprzyca for I Am A Killer, while China’s Huang Bo won best actor for his role in Cai Shang-jun’s The Conformist. Russian director Ivan Bolotnikov’s Kharms was awarded best screenplay (Bolotnikov) and best DoP (Sandor Berkeshi).

No reason has been given for the change in opening film.
Danish director Bille August’s The Chinese Widow will open this year’s Shanghai International Film Festival (Siff, June 17-26), replacing Ann Hui’s Our Time Will Come, which was previously announced as the opening film.
However, Our Time Will Come will still play in the Golden Goblet competition at Siff. No reason was given for the change by either the festival or the film’s producer Bona Film Group.
Both films are set in China during the Second World War. Starring Emile Hirsch and Yu Nan, The Chinese Widow tells the story of an American pilot who is shot down and saved by Chinese villagers. The nominations for the Polish Eagles, the country's main film award and local equivalent of the Oscars, were announced on Tuesday.

Following its presentation as part of the First Look program in Locarno, writer director Maciej Pieprzyca's true life serial killer film Jestem mordercą (I'm A Killer) releases on Polish screens November 4th and the trailer for the film looks very good, indeed. Based on an actual case from the early 1970s the film follows a young detective placed in charge of a unit tracking a serial killer targeting young woman. This particular approach to telling a killer story has been around more or less since the very first one of these films but it's all about the execution, really, and the quality here looks very good. Jan P. Matuszynski’s feature debut The Last Family swept the board at this year’s Gdynia Film Festival in Poland (19-24 September) with eight awards, including the Golden Lions Grand Prix as well as the awards for Best Actor and Actress and the Audience Award.
The tragicomic story also picked up the Journalists Award, the Onetu Award for the three lead actors Aleksandra Konieczna, Andrzej Seweryn and Dawid Ogrodnik, as well as the Elle Crystal Star and the Golden Kangaroo for director Matuszynski.

“Investing in talented European professionals is essential for the competitiveness of the European audiovisual industry” Sari Vartiainen, the Head of Creative Europe – Media Unit said. And this is one of the many purposes of the New Horizons Studio, a workshop for young filmmakers held in the framework of the T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival in Wrocław, Poland.
Proving this point, partner festivals, Transilvania International Film Festival, the Locarno Film Festival and Indie Lisboa sent eight of their talents to join the 2014 edition of New Horizons Studio. Among this year’s participants were the laureates of the Young Cinema Competition of the 2013 Gdynia Film Festival, Paweł Maślona with the short film “Magma” and Julia Kolberger with her short “Mazurek” as well. Hasan Serin and Müge Özen participated in the workshop as part of this year’s focus on Turkish cinema. Other participants included Nicolae Constantin Tanase, Stefano Mosimann and Jorge Jácome.
This year was the workshop’s fifth edition. This training program, supported by the EU’s Creative Europe program and the London Film Academy, included workshops on pitching, production, distribution, promotion and consultation. It is the festival’s most important training program, designed “in such a way that each panel [is] more of a discussion than a lecture” so described by Joanna Łapińska, the head of new horizons studio and the artistic director, T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival. Indeed, according to Małgorzata Kiełkiewicz, the director of the creative Europe desk Poland, the New Horizons Studio has become “one of the most creative and practical training environments for young filmmakers across Europe and it has also helped to stimulate cross-border cooperation between audiovisual professionals.”
The workshop was led by experts such as David Pope, Guillaume de Seille, Gavin Humphries, the Dp/director Wojciech Staroń, the producer Małgorzata Staroń, the creative director of the Cork Film Festival James Mullighan, Marc Guidoni and Joanna Szybist, the official delegate for Cannes’ Critics’ Week Raymond Phatanavirangoon, Emre Yeksen and Gülin Üstün.
Moreover, what was interesting is that four of the Polish filmmakers attending the New Horizons Studio this year were also involved in films being presented as part of the Polish Days which presented its program of finished films, works in progress and pitchings. Indeed, Julia Kolberger pitched “Toxaemia”, her adaptation of Małgorzata Rejmer’s eponymous novel; the producer Anna Chojnacka is working at Re Studio Maciej Pieprzyca’s new feature “I’m The Killer”; the producer Zuzanna Król had a closed screening for international guests of “Performer” by Lukasz Ronduda and Maciej Sobieszczanski and the executive producer Agata Walkosz saw Tomas Weinreb and Petr Kazda’s “I, Olga Hepnarova” presented in the Works in Progress selection.
The twenty-four filmmakers hailing from different parts of the Old Continent participating as directors were Kalina Alabrudzińska, Gautier Dulion, Fabien Gorgeart, Jorge Jácome, Julia Kolberger, Paweł Maślona, Jakub Pączek, Stefano Mosimann, Francesco Rizzi, Hasan Serin, Jagoda Szelc, Tomasz Śliwiński, Justyna Tafel, Nicolae Contantin Tanase and Artur Wyrzykowski while those who participated in the capacity of producers were Anna Chojnacka, Paweł Kosuń, Maria Krauss, Zuzanna Król, Müge Özen, Helena Szoda-Woźniak, Klaudia Śmieja, Agata Walkosz and Joanna Zielińska.

It is the festival’s most important training program, designed “in such a way that each panel [is] more of a discussion than a lecture” so described by Joanna Łapińska, the head of new horizons studio and the artistic director, T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival. Indeed, according to Małgorzata Kiełkiewicz, the director of the creative Europe desk Poland, the New Horizons Studio has become “one of the most creative and practical training environments for young filmmakers across Europe and it has also helped to stimulate cross-border cooperation between audiovisual professionals.”
The workshop was led by experts such as David Pope, Guillaume de Seille, Gavin Humphries, the Dp/director Wojciech Staroń, the producer Małgorzata Staroń, the creative director of the Cork Film Festival James Mullighan, Marc Guidoni and Joanna Szybist, the official delegate for Cannes’ Critics’ Week Raymond Phatanavirangoon, Emre Yeksen and Gülin Üstün.
Moreover, what was interesting is that four of the Polish filmmakers attending the New Horizons Studio this year were also involved in films being presented as part of the Polish Days which presented its program of finished films, works in progress and pitchings. Indeed, Julia Kolberger pitched “Toxaemia”, her adaptation of Małgorzata Rejmer’s eponymous novel; the producer Anna Chojnacka is working at Re Studio Maciej Pieprzyca’s new feature “I’m The Killer”; the producer Zuzanna Król had a closed screening for international guests of “Performer” by Lukasz Ronduda and Maciej Sobieszczanski and the executive producer Agata Walkosz saw Tomas Weinreb and Petr Kazda’s “I, Olga Hepnarova” presented in the Works in Progress selection.
The twenty-four filmmakers hailing from different parts of the Old Continent participating as directors were Kalina Alabrudzińska, Gautier Dulion, Fabien Gorgeart, Jorge Jácome, Julia Kolberger, Paweł Maślona, Jakub Pączek, Stefano Mosimann, Francesco Rizzi, Hasan Serin, Jagoda Szelc, Tomasz Śliwiński, Justyna Tafel, Nicolae Contantin Tanase and Artur Wyrzykowski while those who participated in the capacity of producers were Anna Chojnacka, Paweł Kosuń, Maria Krauss, Zuzanna Król, Müge Özen, Helena Szoda-Woźniak, Klaudia Śmieja, Agata Walkosz and Joanna Zielińska.

The Sundance Film Festival has entered into a partnership with Poznan’s Transatlantyk Film Festival to present a selection of its titles at the forthcoming fourth edition running from August 8-14.
The new sidebar, Sundance at Transatlantyk, will screen such films as Fishing Without Nets, The Green Prince, Watchers Of The Sky, 52 Tuesdays, Difret and A Most Wanted Man, and invite the films’ creators to meet with the audience for Q&As after the screenings.

A total of 24 young filmmakers from Portugal to Turkey will participate in the fifth edition of New Horizons Studio (July 27-30) held during the 14th international film festival in Wroclaw.
The training programme, which receives support from the EU’s Creative Europe programme, includes workshops on pitching, production, distribution and promotion.
As in past years, the majority of the participants are from Poland with others coming from Portugal, France, Switzerland, Romania and Turkey.

New Films by Przemyslaw Wojcieszek, Marcin Krzysztalowicz, Jolanta Dylewska and Andrzej Wajda, will be presented to the foreign professionals during the key industry event of the 14th T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival. The organizers expect around 150 guests to attend.
Polish Days is the most important industry event at the 14.T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival (24 July – 3 August 2014), where industry representatives including programmers, sales agents, producers, film funds and distributors from all over the world watch the latest Polish films at closed screenings.
This year’s edition of Polish Days will take place on July 30 – August 1. Six completed Polish films and ten works-in-progress will be shown at closed screenings, while eleven projects will be pitched to the international audience.
Among the finished films, the representatives of the international film industry will have the chance to see "15 Corners of the World" by Zuzanna Solakiewicz, which will have its world premiere in the Films on Art International Competition at the T-Mobile New Horizons Iff and then international premiere in the Settimana della Critica section of the Locarno Ff in August. Other films shown in full at the closed screenings during Polish Days include "Gods" by Lukasz Palkowski, "Call me Marianna" by Karolina Bielawska, "Performer" by Lukasz Ronduda and Maciej Sobieszczański and two films that will compete in the Main Competition of the T-Mobile International Film Festival - "How to Disappear Completely" by Przemyslaw Wojcieszek and "Calling" by Marcin Dudziak. The organisers hope to secure one extra title in the last moment before the event starts.
Projects in development presented in the pitching session include, among others, "Hungry" by Katarzyna Klimkiewicz, "I’m the Killer" by Maciej Pieprzyca, "Volhynia" by Wojciech Smarzowski, "Window" by Anna Jadowska, "Rosa" by Denijal Hasanovic and "Toxaemia" by Julia Kolberger.
This year, for the first time, two projects presented in the section will be awarded with post-production awards given by Polish Days’ new partners - post-production companies Toya Studios and Chimney Poland.
The works in progress section will show clips from the following films, which are currently in production: "And There Was Love in the Ghetto " by Jolanta Dylewska and Andrzej Wajda, "Carte Blanche" by Jacek Lusiński, "Journey to Rome" by Tomasz Mielnik, "I, Olga Hepnarova" by Tomás Weinreb and Petr Kazda , "The Here After" by Magnus von Horn, "Walser" by Zbigniew Libera and "Close Ups" by Magdalena Piekorz, among others.
The organizers are expecting around 150 guests at the event. Polish Days are co-organized with the Polish Film Institute, Odra Film and the Wrocław Film Commission with the support of the Lower Silesia municipality and the city of Wrocław. Uberto Pasolini’s second feature [pictured] wins at fifth edition of Russian showcase for young European cinema.
Uberto Pasolini’s Still Life was the big winner at the fifth edition of Voices, the Russian showcase for young European cinema, which came to a close on Tuesday evening [July 8] in Vologda.
Pasolini’s second feature as director won the Grand Prix and the award for best actor went to the film’s male lead Eddie Marsan in an “absolutely wonderful performance”.
Jury president Svetlana Proskurina said that the decision for the Grand Prix had been “absolutely unanimous”, while Voices art director Korinna Danielou recalled that having Still Life at the festival had been “a dream come true” for her.
She accepted the award on behalf of Pasolini who had left Vologda on the midnight train to Moscow last Sunday [July 6] on the way to present his film at the festival in Karlovy Vary.

Berlinale festival director Dieter Kosslick and veteran Polish film-maker Andrzej Wajda are to receive the Kristian Award for their Contributions to World Cinema at this week’s Prague International Film Festival – Febiofest.
The award for Wajda will be accepted on his behalf by the actor Robert Więckiewicz, who plays the title in the director’s latest film Walesa: Man Of Hope, at Febiofest’s opening ceremony on 20 March.

Camerimage, the International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography now in its 21st edition, today revealed the line-up of films selected for the festival’s main competition.

Exclusive: Cologne-based Media Luna New Films has closed deals for four titles to be theatrically released in Brazil.
Speaking exclusively to ScreenDaily during this week’s Rio Film Festival, Media Luna’s Ida Martins revealed that Renata de Almeida of Filmes da Mostra has picked up Stijn Coninx’s Marina, based on the childhood memories of the Italian-Belgian singer Rocco Granata, and Diederik Ebbinge’s feature film debut Matterhorn which premiered in Rotterdam where it won the Audience Award.
In addition, Alberto Levy’s new distribution outfit Cafco Films - Cicurel Art Films acquired Miguel Ángel Jiménez’s Chaika, which competed in San Sebastian’s New Directors competition last year, and Antoinette Beumers’ American-set road movie Jackie, starring Holly Hunter and Carice van Houten.
The two deals had been initiated by Media Luna’s Carolina Jessula.

The 16th annual Bradford International Film Festival, which will run March 18-28, is a total celebration of all forms of cinema, from classic films to modern world cinema to a tribute to Cinerama and more. But, most excitingly, is a bombastic collection of some of the best, most exciting underground films being made today.
From Bad Lit’s perspective, the most thrilling screening of the entire 10-day affair is the new film by British filmmaker Peter Whitehead, Terrorism Considered as One of the Fine Arts. In the U.S., Whitehead is a “lost” filmmaker from the underground’s heyday in the ’60s, being left out of most histories of the underground movement. Whitehead directed several influential films, including Wholly Communion and The Fall, before dropping out of filmmaking in the mid-’70s.
Film historian Jack Sargeant wrote extensively about and interviewed Whitehead for his wonderful book on Beat cinema, Naked Lens.
