As Hollywood converges in Toronto and things get noisy, some Canadian film production and financing companies are using the home-field advantage to talk up fresh ideas and announce new projects in a market milieu that feels both untethered and exciting.
“This is a frothy time for content — it’s a perfect moment in entertainment history to get in the game in a disciplined way,” says Unbranded Pictures co-founder Eddy Moretti.
Moretti capped off 20 years as Vice Media’s chief creative officer by greenlighting Vice’s investment in Scott Z. Structurally, the movie box office is pointed back to the future, but with a couple of twists.
As we approached mid-July, according to data compiled by Boxofficemojo.com, the domestic box-office take for films released in 2018 was startlingly top-heavy. According to numbers posted Friday—before the current weekend is factored in—the Top Ten films, led by Black Panther, accounted for $3.34 billion, or 58.8 percent, of the $5.68 billion in sales for 362 movies. So 352 films were left to split $2.34 billion, for an average of about $6.6 million each.
In the year’s second half, of course, performance will even out a bit, as awards contenders and holiday films diminish the lead by first-half blockbusters. But it appears likely that, for the first time in recent memory, the Top Ten films will finish the year with 40 percent or more of the total box-office.

A villainous James Franco gets what’s coming to him in the new trailer for Lionsgate’s upcoming science-fiction thriller “Kin,” starring Jack Reynor, Myles Truitt, Zoe Kravitz, and Dennis Quaid.
Truitt portrays the younger adopted brother of a recently released ex-con, played by Reynor, and the object of pursuit by Franco’s grinning villain. Truitt’s Eli finds a mysterious weapon, shaped a bit like a briefcase and possessing mystical powers, and that weapon becomes the brothers’ sole protection as they try to evade Franco and federal agents — after Eli zaps Franco’s criminal with the extraterrestrial weapon.
“I know I’m not a good guy, but it’s been pretty incredible to be brothers for the first time,” Reynor tells Truitt in trailer.
Lionsgate bought the movie at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2016 while it was in pre-production. The film is financed by No Trace Camping. Daniel Casey wrote the script,...
