The Drake-Kendrick Lamar showdown will continue — at the 2024 BET Awards.
The rappers will compete in two categories at the June 30 show: best male hip-hop artist and best collaboration. In the latter category, Drake is nominated for “Rich Baby Daddy” with Sza and Sexyy Red, while Lamar is nominated for his guest verse on the remix of Beyoncé’s “America Has a Problem.”
Drake is the show’s top contender with seven nominations, thanks to his album For All the Dogs (Scary Hours Edition). Lamar didn’t release an album that was eligible this year. The Canadian rapper’s other nominations include album of the year, best male R&b/pop artist and viewer’s choice for “Rich Baby Daddy.” He’s nominated twice in the video of the year category: “Rich Baby Daddy” and his guest verse on J. Cole’s “First Person Shooter,” the late 2023 track that reignited his feud with Lamar.

Over four nights in March, Rolling Stone’s Future of Music showcase at SXSW brought the stars of tomorrow to Austin’s famed Acl Live at the Moody Theater. Six years ago, in the spring of 2018, Teezo Touchdown and some friends drove nearly 250 miles across Texas from their hometown, Beaumont, to the state capital of Austin. SXSW was in full swing, bringing thousands of people each day to the downtown thoroughfare of Sixth Street, where Teezo and his friends set up. “We got ourselves a speaker and a microphone,” he recalled last night. “But we didn’t have no shows.” So, Teezo said, he spilled his soul right there on the street until the cops made him leave for performing without a permit.

No stranger to corporate jingles, Pusha T has hopped on a new song titled “Paper Right” as part of a new ad campaign for the financial services organization Tiaa. While Push’s verse mostly stays on the theme of retirement planning, he sneaks in a coke rap about his drug dealing days, too.
On the posse cut with Wyclef Jean, CoSign alum Lola Brooke, Flau’jae, and Capella Grey, Push spits a cautionary tale from the past. “Stood tall on ’em corners/ Old ladies warned us, so they ain’t have to mourn us,” he raps. “Street lords said, ‘Join us’/ You could turn a brick to a Beamer, here some pointers/ Nowadays, I’m ignorin’ ’em.”
Push continues with lines about building a legacy for his son and leaving behind generational wealth, though he admits to keeping a “side hustle” to hit his apparently lofty goals. Stream the track and...

Pusha T has gone from dissing McDonalds to promoting long-term financial independence in a new posse cut with Wyclef Jean, Lola Brooke, Flau’jae, and Capella Grey, “Paper Right,” that’s part of a new Tiaa ad campaign.
The song is kinda exactly what you’d expect from a don’t-call-it-a-jingle jingle for a financial giant focused on providing retirement services. “Financial freedom is so fulfillin’,” Brooke raps in her verse, “Generational wealth is what you show the children.”

In 2013, as a college student, Grammy-nominated producer Khris Riddick-Tynes was mixing tracks for Ariana Grande’s debut album Yours Truly in the back of his political science class at Loyola Marymount University. An experience that he says, “Was creating something, with knowing that we knew it was tight, but then it getting out into the world and blowing up.”

Now, over 10 years later, the millennial has worked on music from a plethora of genres, including hip-hop, pop and everything in between for other top artists like Drake and rising rap star Lola Brooke. All of this has led him to multiple Grammy nominations over the years, including for Sza’s “Snooze” at the 2024 ceremony.
“The most intriguing thing about making music, especially from a young age, was how we basically make something appear out of thin air,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Fifty years ago, the sisterhood of hip-hop did not yet exist. The genre was still an infant, and women were fighting to have their voices heard among the founding fathers, so competition between them was more encouraged than comradeship. Yet, five decades later, emerging artist Maiya the Don finds herself in the middle of rap's women renaissance with fellow femcees supporting her at every turn. Not every up-and-coming woman rapper can say that.
"Everybody that I've engaged with has been nothing but sweet and welcoming," the 21-year-old tells Popsugar of her newfound rap friendships.
Starting out as a beauty creator on TikTok, Maiya didn't get her first taste of fame until her big moment arrived last October. "Telfy," the Brooklynite's first hit single - a flip of Sisqo's 1999 classic "Thong Song" and dubbed the official Telfar handbag anthem - was inescapable on social media as her designer-inspired, braggadocious bars made the rounds.

On Thursday, August 10 — a day ahead of rap’s 50th birthday — New York rap legends Wu-Tang Clan took the stage at the Knockdown Center in Queens, performing exclusively for SiriusXM and Pandora as part of its “For the Love” Hip-Hop 50th anniversary celebration.
After Brooklyn’s own Lola Brooke delivered a fiery opening set, Public Enemy’s Flavor Flav and SiriusXM host Sway Calloway came out to introduce the Wu, who duly tore things up — suggesting, as RZA recently told us, hip-hop is “at the base of the mountain, not at the top.

Growing up in the Bay Area, Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper, now known to fans as Saweetie, listened to 106.1 Kmel and Wild 949 on her drive to school with her dad every morning. And like clockwork, Turf Talk's "It's a Slumper," her dad's favorite song, could be heard blasting from the 808 speakers in the trunk as they made their way across the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge. At home, the family computer was riddled with viruses, thanks to her LimeWire downloads of Nicki Minaj and Remy Ma's mixtapes. This was Saweetie's first introduction to hip-hop.

Teyana Taylor is a BET Award winner - again! The multihyphenate took home the award for video director of the year Sunday night, and though she wasn't present for the ceremony, her mom, Nikki Taylor, made sure she got to enjoy her big moment in real time - by video calling her right from the stage.
Confused by her mother's video call in front of the crowd, Teyana said, "What is happening?" But after her mom informed her that she'd won, an excited Teyana ran out of the room before ultimately returning to deliver an impromptu acceptance speech (through the phone) filled with gratitude. Teyana last won the video director award in 2020.

Juneteenth, which falls on June 19, commemorates the fall of slavery in the United States.
It celebrates the anniversary of the order made by Major General Gordon Granger on June 1965 that proclaimed freedom for slaves in Texas. The order was actually made two years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
In a tweet Monday, former President Obama explained it as the “delayed but welcome news of freedom reaching the enslaved Black folks in Galveston, Texas.” In 2021, President Biden made Juneteenth a federal holiday.
Many networks are marking the occasion with Juneteenth TV specials or movie marathons showcasing Black talent and/or excellence. See our viewing guide below:

Pap Chanel is ready to shock the world with her latest EP, "Paptivities." After a nearly two-year gap between 2021's "Pretty & Paid 2.0" and her new six-track project, released May 12, the rising rapper tells Popsugar why she took her time crafting "Paptivities" - and why the EP sounds vastly different from her previous releases. "On this project right here, every song sounds completely different," Chanel explains. "I have one song where I'm telling my fans all my business. I'm super excited for that one because people don't really get to hear transparency from artists. This is a record where I got really vulnerable and talked about the good, bad, and the ugly."
The record in question is the EP's opener, "Pap Stories," an introspective track where Chanel raps about everything from wearing "war wounds" to brushing off haters who doubted her. As promised, every other song on "Paptivities" adopts a different...

The rap world is ever-changing, and 2022 showed us where we might be heading next. The year was full of solid releases from budding stars who set the stage for a lower-key sensibility within hip-hop. It was a year where fans turned away from the larger-than-life superstars towards more down-to-earth figures in the scene. The rise of homegrown acts like Babytron and newcomers Ice Spice proved that hip-hop’s new landscape is abundant. In today’s rap world, there’s something for everyone.
