Claudia Priscilla and Kiko Goifman's Bixa Travesty, which is receiving an exclusive global online premiere on Mubi, is showing from November 26 – December 25, 2019 in Mubi's Viewfinder series.Bixa Travesty is, above all, a political film. Trans black singer Linn da Quebrada faces machismo and transphobia in their multiple forms. Linn touches wounds that are bleeding right now as we speak: old-fashioned, square mindsets in Brazil and the world are put at stake.In her songs, speeches and daily life, Linn’s tough demeanor is introduced to us. The “transvestyte” (as she likes to spell it) is challenged in the streets. Facing prejudice, Linn moves away from the victim role and grabs her weapons. As she sings, "My black skin is my cloak of courage" or "She doesn’t want penis, she wants peace." She is a super warrior in Brazil—the country that most kills transsexuals in the whole world.

Morelia, Mexico – Miami-based FiGa Films has sold Berlinale Teddy Award-winning docu “Bixa Travesty” to French arthouse distributor Arizona Films at Morelia.
The Brazilian docu-feature world premiered at this year’s Berlinale before participating in more than 100 festivals. It opened the 16th Morelia Int’l Film Fest’s Sexual Diversity+ Program, curated by Antonio Harfuch.
“With this first Brazilian acquisition for Arizona Distribution, we are proud and thrilled to start with a documentary combining art and politics in such a sparkling form; we’re confident this generous documentary will meet its audience in France,” said Arizona’s Bénédicte Thomas.

NewFest, the New York-set Lgbtq film festival that is celebrating its 30th year, has unveiled its full linuep of movies ahead of its run October 24-30. As previously announced, the fest opens with Yen Tan’s AIDS drama 1985 starring Gotham‘s Corey Michael Smith, The Gifted‘s Jamie Chung, Aidan Langford, Virginia Madsen and Michael Chiklis.

The Sheffield Doc/Fest, one of the largest non-fiction festivals in the world, kicked off this weekend with around 200 films as it celebrates its 25th anniversary. The festival is launching the world premiere of films such as Jack Black-associated The Insufferable Groo, the European premiere of Neon-acquired Three Identical Strangers and UK premieres of Pedro Almodóvar-exec produced The Silence of Others and Maya Rudolph-produced Shirkers.
The event, which runs June 7 to 12 and is somewhat similar to the Sundance Film Festival, is both a publicly facing festival with a sizeable industry angle, with broadcasters and filmmakers debating the future of the form and highlighting the latest high-profile projects.

This is the second of two dispatches from Michael Pattison on International Film Festival Rotterdam 2014.
The spectre of barbarism isn’t just haunting European Cinema. False radicalisms and tentative engagements with the world today are prevalent all over the seventh art. And while all-out bunk is as infrequent as what others might call ‘great cinema’, it’s the ever-widening middle ground—the one that pervades and defines many a film festival—that seems especially disappointing.
Just as the cinematic landscape as a whole is peppered too sporadically with outstanding works, so on a micro level, unremarkable films frustrate precisely because otherwise fine technical rendering is undone by an apparent unwillingness to confront prevailing political currents. Even if chewable nuggets intermittently emerge over the course of a single film, we are on the whole limited to thanking the Lord for small mercies.
Of course, it’s difficult enough to make a film to begin with.

The International Film Festival Rotterdam has unveiled the selections for its Bright Future and Spectrum programmes (list of premiere titles below).
Across both sections there are 37 world premieres.
Bright Future is comprised of 63 films, all first and second features. Bright Future includes five films supported by the Hubert Bals Fund, including Carlos Armella’s Las voces.
Five films from Bright Future will compete in the Big Screen Award Competition, including telepathic dwarf thriller La distancia by Sergio Caballero; and Riad Sattouf’s Jacky au royaume des filles starring Charlotte Gainsbourg.

The selection sees a healthy mix of first-time filmmakers up against established industry names from more than a dozen states including Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Pernambuco, Maranhão, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Bahia, Ceará, Paraíba and Santa Catarina.
Last year’s top Redentor prize went to first-time filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho’s O Som Ao Redor (Neighbouring Sounds), which earned the best film and screenplay honours.

There are thousands of film festivals all over the world. Some are prestigious and well known--taking place in large cities across Europe and the U.S.--others in out-of-the-way towns that no one has ever heard of. These festivals show all kinds of films--from a range countries, on various topics and of many genres.
Often the films tend to be heavy on stories from the U.S.and Europe--focusing on the developed world and centering on mainstream populations. Generally speaking, they showcase films directed by men and about people who are White, straight, and well-off. As a result there are countless specialty festivals--Latino, Asian, African, and others--whose objective is to feature the talents of marginalized filmmakers. But even at a niche festival there are groups which continue to be underrepresented. At a Latino film festival it’s not always easy to find films that are Jewish, gay, indigenous, Afro-Latino or about Latin American immigrants from unexpected countries like Japan or Germany. Granted there aren’t as many movies made about these populations but--on the bright side--this year has proven to be a bountiful one for Latino Lgbt films. They have played renowned mainstream festivals like Sundance and Berlin and are making the rounds at gay festivals. It’s about time.

Often the films tend to be heavy on stories from the U.S.and Europe--focusing on the developed world and centering on mainstream populations. Generally speaking, they showcase films directed by men and about people who are White, straight, and well-off. As a result there are countless specialty festivals--Latino, Asian, African, and others--whose objective is to feature the talents of marginalized filmmakers. But even at a niche festival there are groups which continue to be underrepresented. At a Latino film festival it’s not always easy to find films that are Jewish, gay, indigenous, Afro-Latino or about Latin American immigrants from unexpected countries like Japan or Germany. Granted there aren’t as many movies made about these populations but--on the bright side--this year has proven to be a bountiful one for Latino Lgbt films. They have played renowned mainstream festivals like Sundance and Berlin and are making the rounds at gay festivals. It’s about time.

Another day, another trio of announcements from the Berlin International Film Festival (February 9 through 19). First off, this year's Berlinale Camera has been presented to Haro Senft, "one of the pioneers of New German Cinema as well as a tireless advocate of German children films... He was the initiator of Doc 59, a group based in Munich at the end of the 1950s; many of its members went on to sign the Oberhausen Manifesto in 1962." His 1961 documentary short Kahl was nominated for an Oscar and Bruno Ganz gave his first performance in a major role in Senft's first narrative feature, Der sanfte Lauf (1967).

BERLIN -- The political, the eclectic and the simply weird will be on display in the official lineup for the Berlin International Film Festival's Forum sidebar. Highlights of the 2006 Forum, announced Friday, include My Country, My Country, Laura Poitras' the documentary about the Iraqi parliamentary elections; psychological thriller Strange Circus, from Japanese director Sono Sion; and the informatively titled docu 37 Uses for a Dead Sheep, from British helmer Ben Hopkins. This year's lineup includes features from 29 countries, spanning South Africa (Khalo Matabane's documentary Conversations on a Sunday Afternoon), Ukraine (Happy People, from Aleksandr Shapiro), Korea (So Yong-kim's In Between Days and Shin Dong-il's Host & Guest) and Brazil (Kiko Goifman's Acts of Men). Films by German directors featured in the 2006 Forum include Ulrich Koehler's surreal Windows on Monday and two films that deal with the complicated relationship between Germany and Turkey: Thomas Arslan's From Far Away and Aysun Bademsoy's On the Outskirts. Meanwhile, up-and-coming talent and cutting-edge German filmmaking are the key features of this year's Perspectives on German Cinema, the Berlin sidebar that focuses on young German directors.
