You've seen Beyoncé's "Formation" video, you've parsed through all the details, now what to make of it? New York writer-at-large Rembert Browne, The Cut editors Allison Davis and Ashley Weatherford, and Vulture editor Dee Lockett unpack their thoughts on Beyoncé's blackness, feminism, politics, and slayage. Ashley: What a time to be Black and alive! Just when I was thinking nothing could top Missy Elliott’s appearance at the Super Bowl last year, Beyoncé drops this gem, which she’ll hopefully perform during halftime. There’s often talk of what it means to be “unapologetically black” and this video is the blueprint. Lyric by lyric she celebrates blackness. Blue Ivy’s natural hair? Check. Hot sauce always on deck? Check. Recognizing the divine creation that is Red Lobster? Double check. Beyoncé is very black, lest you forget. Rembert: Ashley, by “black” I think you meant to say “Negro,” because that is...

‘The X Factor’ has gotten its four groups together, so now the contestants can show us what they’ve really got! Did you agree with the judges’ choices? Let us know!
The first “Four-Chair Challenge” has begun, and the competition has been narrowed — so put your claws away, Simon Cowell! Ten hopefuls performed, with four seats for each group, and the judges could swap people in and out as they pleased! Read on to find out HollywoodLife.com‘s thoughts on the performances!
Kelly Rowland’s Over 25 Group
Kelly Rowland is in charge of the over 25 group, which started the night. Victoria Carriger, the 41-year old raspy-voiced mom, kicked it off with “To Make You Feel My Love.” It was half Norah Jones-y, half hungover-sounding. But Kelly said yes!
Kristine Mirelle, 27, then sang a haunting, jazz cafe rendition of “Oops I Did It Again.” I agreed with Simon...

She was just a girl, standing in front of a reality singing competition panel, asking them to love* her.
Unfortunately, said girl (though American) was not Julia Roberts, the boy member of said panel (though British) was not Hugh Grant, and the story wasn’t a Hollywood romcom with a guaranteed happy ending.
Nope, this was The X Factor‘s controversial new “Four Chair Challenge.” And for poor, desperate Allison Davis — and six other contestants like her — the literal and proverbial chair got pulled out from under her “Over 25″ ass, leaving her to land with a thud on a hard bed of crumbled,...

We've narrowed it down to the Top 40 on "The X Factor." Now they will each perform for the judges in the four-chair challenge, which is where the mentors will systematically narrow their 10 acts down to four.
The way it works is each mentor has four chairs to fill and they fill them as they go along, but once they are full, in order to add another act, they must eliminate one. It's not like this is anything new on a singing competition show (narrowing from a few dozen to a pseudo-Top 10) but this format should prove quite dramatic.
To recap the categories, Kelly Rowland has over 25s, Paulina Rubio has boys, Demi Lovato has girls and Simon Cowell has groups.
The Over 25s
Victoria Carriger is up first, she's the separated mom of eight children. She sings "To Make You Feel My Love" with a very coffeehouse-y vibe. She...

Did your favorites make it into one of the final four groups? See who’s sailing through to the next round and weigh in!
With just one week until “The Four-Chair Challenge” — you know, that thing that sounds suspiciously like something you might see on The Voice – the judges were under a lot of pressure to narrow down the competition on the Sept. 26 episode of The X Factor. And narrow they did! Simon Cowell and the gang hand-picked 10 contestants to be in each of the show’s four categories, but as we saw, making those decisions was no easy task.
Girl (Group) Power
The evening kicked off with Glamour, a trio of tweens that decided to sing the National Anthem for some ungodly reason. The girls’ voices were good, and they made it through, but seriously… the National Anthem? That was one performance I did not salute.
A second female trio followed,...

Novelty acts, not-as-funny-as-you-think fame-seekers and the mentally/emotionally unstable, your time is up!
The X Factor‘s Season 3 auditions have come to their inevitable end, making way for something called “The Four-Chair Challenge.” (Cue a Christina Aguilera side-eye as she realizes this phrase sounds like what happens when all four coaches press their buttons during The Voice audition rounds. We’re with you on this one, Xtina, even if the X Factor’s new substitute for “Boot Camp” and “Judges’ Houses” has nothing to do with rotating seats or “blinds.”)

Read on for HollywoodLife.com’s top five auditions of the night, then tell us Your favorite singer!
The X Factor launched into its third week of auditions Sept. 25, and while the episode began with the usual parade of tone-deaf buffoons, a few contestants managed to shine bright and make it through to the next round — including Lorie Moore, 34, who brought the hiz-ouse down with her powerful performance of “I Have Nothing.” And that’s clearly a lie, because she definitely has something: the x factor!
Emery Kelly Refuses To ‘Give Up’
The first collective “yes” went to 15-year-old Long Island-native Emery Kelly, whom the judges immediately compared to Bruno Mars – mostly because he wears a hat and is kind of small. Pulling from a different crooner’s repertoire, the energetic whippersnapper sang Jason Mraz‘s “I Won’t Give Up.” I didn’t hear anything special in his voice,...
