- Kent Monkman was born in 1965 in Canada. He is a director and writer, known for Blood River (2000), Shooting Geronimo (2007) and A Nation Is Coming (1996).
- His mother was of English and Irish descent, and his father's background was Cree. His parents were involved in missionary work in northern Manitoba, but the family moved to Winnipeg when Kent was two years old. He graduated from Sheridan College (Ontario) with a degree in illustration, and worked in theatre as a set and costume designer.
- In addition to film-making, he is a painter, installation artist, and performance artist.
- He was awarded the O.C. (Officer of the Order of Canada) on May 11, 2023 from the Canadian Governor General. He lives in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
