Not unlike the previous year, a whopping eight thousand plus short films were submitted to Sundance this year. Among some of the filmmaker names that we are already familiar with, we find several feature filmmakers moonlighting back to the short form; basically the short is healthier than ever. Topping the 2015 crop, we have Jake Mahaffy (whose feature, Free in Deed appears to be somewhere in post) who contributes to our understanding of 13th century rule with the year specific, A.D. 1363, The End of Chivalry. We have Cutie and the Boxer helmer working in the fiction form with Hugh the Hunter and form the same vintage 2013 year, fellow feature film helmer Shaka King (director of Newlyweeds) turns in a short in Mulignans (see pic above). Michael Mohan who has been to Sundance with features One Too Many Dates and Save the Date, returns with Pink Grapefruit.

There will be some Eloise and Lena Dunham, protests from Hong Kong, self-declared pop-ups from Canada, and unbelievable animated images of the final moments of a World War II hero. Those are just a few of the offerings among the 60 short films revealed today by the Sundance Film Festival. In the last of its four official announcements, the 31st annual Park City shindig rolled out an eclectic mix culled from the 8,061 submissions in the category that perhaps shows the true scope of Sundance most acutely.
The fest runs January 22-February 1. (As in past years, Deadline co-Editor-in-Chief, Film Mike Fleming Jr. and myself will be in Park City.)

Manuel here with some Spectacular Spectacular news!
This one goes out to those Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin fanatics out there (there’s still a number of us, right?). Since releasing The Great Gatsby ...sorry, two-time Academy Award winner The Great Gatsby, Baz has been flexing his muscles elsewhere: he directed some beautiful shorts for the Prada/Schiaparelli exhibit at the Metropolitan museum, he directed the musical stage adaptation of Strictly Ballroom currently playing in Sydney, and threw quite the lavish party (does he throw any other kind?) to commemorate the opening of Melbourne’s newest mall, Emporium. We’ve also been hearing whispers of him possibly directing the long-gestating Stanley Kubrick project on Napoleon for HBO. While we wait, those of us in the tri-state area (or those visiting) may get our Baz-fix from the holiday windows at Barney’s this winter in what the retail company is calling...

Steven Spielberg
As HBO’s CEO, Michael Fuchs, who’d come up through the company’s programming side, had spent 11 years working to transform the service from a movie channel with some pleasant original filler into a true programming platform. Ironically, Fuchs’ vision wouldn’t come to full fruit until after he’d left the company in May 1995, and it would happen under a guy who had no programming experience at all: Jeff Bewkes, who took over the CEO’s slot after Fuchs’ departure.
A friend of mine in the company who’d worked with Bewkes once explained his programming philosophy while we were talking about some of the company’s big dollar extravaganzas, like Band of Brothers. Bewkes didn’t interfere with the creative side. “If you can make it make business sense to him, Jeff’ll say, ‘Go ahead.’ If you can...

The author and screenwriter talks to Nicholas Wroe about emotional openness, storytelling and how Hollywood critiques help you focus as a novelist
'If you are a screenwriter and you write a novel, then you are still a screenwriter," explains William Nicholson. "With two novels you become a screenwriter who writes novels, and with three you are a novelist and screenwriter. But write seven or eight novels …? At the moment the people in my different worlds don't have much idea of the other things I do. The film world especially has no clue that I've written children's books, adult novels and plays. What I'd really like is to be up for a film award and literary award in the same year. That would confuse them."
A bold ambition, and looking at Nicholson's track record, not an entirely fanciful one. As a screenwriter he has been Oscar-nominated for adapting his own play about Cs Lewis,...

For a guy as prolific as Steven Spielberg tends to be, 2013 was a curious year for the filmmaker. Following "Lincoln," the director had long been planning to make "Robopocalypse," but he shelved the project in January, citing that the script needed more work. He then lined up "American Sniper" with Bradley Cooper slated to star, only to drop out of that too, with Clint Eastwood taking over the director's chair. And while Spielberg as plethora of producing projects on the go (including Stanley Kubrick's vision of "Napoleon" with Baz Luhrmann to helm), it's not certain what he'll direct next. But another option has come to the table. Deadline reports that Spielberg is eyeing "Montezuma," which is based on a fifty year old script penned by the legendary Dalton Trumbo. As the story goes, Kirk Douglas had commissioned the script from his (at the time) regular collaborator Trumbo (who also...

It was here, in what was Passage Saumon off the Rue du Bout du Monde – the end of the world road – that Victor Hugo is said to have sheltered between the stone pillars of the public baths and a ballroom of low repute from a raging battle between republican and monarchist forces on 5 June 1832. For most holidays, you can find music that's generally of the celebratory sort. When it comes to Presidents' Day, however, the selection is more of a mixed bag. From the obscure references ("Whip It") to the general ("Presidents and Magistrates") to the more obvious ("James K. Polk"), the American president has been alternately lauded and pummeled in song. In putting together this playlist, more often we've found it's been the latter. Take a spin through our list of 13 presidential songs, one-by-one with selected lyrics/explanations, or in full below, and let us know what we missed in the comments.

[1] A few months ago we showed you the first trailer [2] for Napoleon Dynamite: The Animated Series, which offered a brief glimpse at the new show. At this year's Comic-Con, Fox brought out several clips to give the audience a better taste of what to expect. Based on 2004's sleeper hit indie, the new show will see all of the main cast from the movie -- Jon Heder, Aaron Ruell, Efren Ramirez, Tina Majorino, Sandy Martin, Jon Gries, and Diedrich Bader -- revisiting the now-animated town of Preston, Idaho to lend their voices to their cartoon counterparts. Jared Hess and Jerusha Hess, who created the film, are executive producing along with Mike Scully (The Simpsons). Watch the clips after the jump. And here's the trailer: [Clips via Geek Tyrant [3]] I'm of two minds about this show. Napoleon Dynamite as an animated series was a great idea, the film was basically a live action cartoon anyway. I think the material and characters will work better in the form of animation anyway. There's more they can play with, and it seems like the writing and humor is basically going to stay the same. There was a panel held at Comic-Con this year were Fox showed off a few clips from the series, those clips are now online for your viewing enjoyment. For those of you who were fans of the film, then it looks like you will most likey enjoy this series.
The series is scheduled to air on Fox Midseason 2012. Check out the four clips and a trailer below and tell us what you think!

With the frustrating news breaking last week that Guillermo Del Toro’s adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness (based on an H.P. From further research it’s clear that the major directors that have worked within the industry have abandoned vast numbers of productions that would have easily been big money makers and both critical and financial successes. Indeed, filmmakers like Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch and Orson Welles have abandoned dozens of projects, even after beginning production on some of them!

"Napoleon Dynamite's" adaptation from cult movie classic to animated TV series has pretty much everything going for it -- a "Simpsons" writer at the helm, a stellar regular cast and a built-in fan base. And, at a Thursday (July 21) Comic-Con press conference, writer Mike Scully dished about four guest stars scheduled to appear in the show's first six-episode season.
"We've got Amy Poehler, Sam Rockwell, Jemaine Clement and Jennifer Coolidge," said Scully at a Comic-Con press conference promoting the upcoming Fox show.
The show already managed to sign all the principal actors from the movie -- from lead Jon Heder (Napoleon) to Jon Gries (Uncle Rico and "Lost's" Roger Linus) to Tina Majorino (Deb) and Efren Ramirez (Pedro). Even Sandy Martin (Grandma) -- like Majorino, a a "Big Love" alum -- and the multi-talented Diedrich Bader (Rex).

You know, you don't have to be a frickin' idiot to appreciate Napoleon Dynamite. There's something oddly charming about his off-kilter brand of slow-witted humor that was born for the animated medium.
Well, wait no longer! For the trailer, anyway. The latest look to come out of Fox's upfront presentation is the first glance at the animated adaptation of Napoleon Dynamite, which hits the airwaves in midseason and impressively boasts the entire f#$king original cast of the film!
Additionally, the first season will include guest spots from Jennifer Coolidge (American Pie), Sam Rockwell (Iron Man 2), and Jermaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords).
Check out the official press release from Fox, and save your judgement til you watch the trailer below!

[1] Last May it was announced [2] that 20th Century Fox was developing an animated television series based on the 2004 Fox Searchlight film Napoleon Dynamite. A year later, Fox has released the first trailer for the upcoming series, Napoleon Dynamite: The Animated Series. The one minute promo is only a teaser, as the series won't air until Midseason 2012. Looks pretty much like you would expect, the question is: Is it still funny or are they capitalizing on the popularity of the 2004 indie a little too late? Watch the promo trailer now embedded after the jump. Please leave your thoughts in the comments below. Trailer: Creators/Executive Producers Jared Hess Jerusha Hess Mike Scully Voice Cast Jon Heder as Napoleon Dynamite Aaron Ruell as Kip Efren Ramirez as Pedro Tina Majorino as Deb Sandy Martin as Grandma Jon Gries as Uncle Rico Diedrich Bader as Rex Official Plot Info: Based on the hit film,...

When San Francisco Police Department Det. Rebecca Madsen (Sarah Jones, “Sons of Anarchy”) is assigned to a grisly homicide case, a fingerprint leads her to a shocking suspect: Jack Sylvane (guest star Jeffrey Pierce, “The Nine”), a former Alcatraz inmate who died decades ago. Given her family history – both her grandfather and surrogate uncle, Ray Archer (Robert Forster, “Jackie Brown”), were guards at the prison – Madsen’s interest is immediately piqued, and once the enigmatic, knows-everything-but-tells-nothing government agent Emerson Hauser (Sam Neill, “Jurassic Park”) tries to impede her investigation, she’s doggedly committed. With the frustrating news breaking last weak that Guillermo Del Toro’s adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness (based on an H.P. Lovecraft story) is ‘dead’, I began thinking about some of the other potentially great projects that audiences were tragically destined to never see.

Some would say “difficult and remote”. Others would say “brilliant, bold, daring but an absolute control freak”. The late Stanley Kubrick was labelled many things in his time but no one can doubt the man had a rich talent for realising cinema as a grand, sensory spectacle. This month marks the 12th anniversary since his death and as a tribute to his talents I would like to propose 50 reasons why the filmmaker may have actually been the greatest director of all time.
In no particular order;
1. Was a Master Of Almost Every Genre
There’s little doubt that Kubrick was a cinematic connoisseur. To prove it he created a classic entry in almost every genre, whether it be a clever comedy satire (Dr Strangelove), a masterful psychological horror (The Shining), innovative sci-fi’s (2001: A Space Odyssey & A Clockwork Orange), a beautiful period drama (Barry Lyndon), controversial anti-war movies (Paths of Glory...

A talented Irish actor on stage and in films for Ford and Huston
For an actor who worked with two of the greatest movie directors of the last century and appeared in the world premieres of plays by Brian Friel, Ireland's leading contemporary dramatist, Donal Donnelly, who has died after a long illness, aged 78, was curiously unrecognised. Like so many prominent Irish actors in the diasporas of Hollywood, British television, the West End and Broadway – all areas he conquered – Donnelly was a great talent and a private citizen, happily married for many years, and always seemed youthful.
There was something mischievous, something larkish, about him, too. He twinkled. And he had a big nose. He had long lived in New York, although he died in Chicago, and had started out in Dublin, although born in England.
In John Huston's swansong movie The Dead (1987), the best screen transcription of a James Joyce fiction,...

The world on Wednesday was forced to say good-bye to Henry Gibson, the high-pitched voice comedic actor who knew how to light up the screen in almost any role. Gibson died Monday after fighting cancer. He was 73. Young audiences today likely best know Gibson as Judge Clark Brown in the William Shatner star vehicle "Boston Legal," but his resume is quite extensive, especially when it comes to the world of science-fiction. After appearances on "The Joey Bishop Show," "77 Sunset Strip" and "The Beverly Hillbillies," Gibson found some work in the genre as Napoleon in the 1968 "Bewitched" episode "Samantha's Fresh Pastry." He would return two years later as Tim O'Shanter in "If the Shoe Pinches." Making a name for himself in "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In," Gibson would appear in a couple ...

In Get Shorty, Danny DeVito's Martin Weir played Napoleon Bonaparte in one of the biggest movies of that year. Because the studios like to mimic each other, I can't believe we will have waited another 15 years to see a Hollywood studio go after Napoleon. Al Pacino has signed on to play a version of Napoleon in the upcoming childrens book adaptation, Betsy and the Emperor. He would be the Emperor in that equation.
