Four years ago, 15-year-old Victor Wembanyama celebrated his appearance in the Fiba Europe U16 European Championship tournament by opening an official Instagram account, one that he or his people (or both) maintain to this day. The first post was a small collage of him and his teammates playing for Team France. A push-shot Wemby, as he is colloquially known; a shot block; a pic of him and his fellow Frenchmen cheesing for the camera and getting a group flex in. The first comment, posted all those years ago, from ‘Stratton_05,” is a goat emoji.

Many filmmakers yearn for their work to be at the centre of a public conversation. But it’s not always a good thing.
Sometimes, movies – even great ones – are put under the microscope for problematic characters, plotlines or moments.
Often, this is a result of changing social standards. Films like The Jazz Singer utilised blackface at a time when it was more or less completely socially acceptable. Watch it now, however, and you’ll likely be mortified.
Other films, of course, are problematic the moment they hit cinemas – such as Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
In some cases, the question of whether or not a film is offensive can provoke strong debate among fans and even those involved in making the film. This week, Michael Caine was in the news after hitting back at claims that the 1964 film Zulu was a “key text” for white supremecists.

WME has acquired full ownership of BDA Sports Management, which has built up a formidable client list of NBA players during its 25 years in business.
BDA founder Bill Duffy will join WME Sports as head of its basketball division and BDA agents, staff and clients will be under the WME umbrella after the official close of the deal.
In 2020, WME had taken a minority position in BDA, which was founded in 1998 and has repped many top-tier players, among them 30 NBA Draft lottery picks, 44 All-Stars and 15 winners of an NBA title. BDA’s current roster includes more than 40 NBA players, among them Luka Dončić, Scottie Barnes, Rj Barrett and Deandre Ayton.

There seem to be two distinct trains of thought when it comes to 1980's "Flash Gordon." Either viewers think it's a flawed yet lovable pulp romp, or they hate its absurd cheesiness. No matter what side you're on, you have to admit that the late Mike Hodge's adaptation of the popular comic strip series was visually distinct and impressive at times. The film's ending, in particular, was arguably on par with the "Star Wars" films at the time, just with a distinct campy tone.
As it turns out, the ending we got wasn't exactly the ending we got. According to author and filmmaker John Walsh, the original and much more, ahem, flashy ending was trimmed down due to its over-ambition. When speaking to Den of Geek about his book "Flash Gordon: The Official Story of the Film" in 2021, Walsh revealed some major details about this scrapped ending, which included...

The character of Flash Gordon has had a long and rich history in pop culture lasting almost 100 years. The first appearance of the space bound all-American hero was found in a science-fiction comic strip created in 1934 by illustrator Alex Raymond and writer Don Moore. Former Olympian and actor Buster Crabbe appeared as the character in the classic Universal serials that depicted Flash Gordon's clashes with Ming the Merciless on the planet Mongo. Fondly remembered for their air of wispy nostalgia, the "Flash Gordon" serials always ended on a cliffhanger. I remember one in particular where Flash is thrown down a dark hole with no chance of escape, only to be saved by the sudden deployment of a net in the first scene of the next episode.
That is to say, "Flash Gordon" was always a little ridiculous.
The Buster Crabbe serials have certainly left their mark on film history, but...

Honestly, I think that some of these are mighty funny installments for a show that went past its 350th episode in this period, but there's no question that a fair amount of repetitiveness had set in here and an impressive number of plots feel either cribbed from earlier shows, or at least siblings to earlier plots. Talk about animal magnetism: Prince William, David Beckham and NBA star Yao Ming have made a compelling video to address a serious topic: wildlife poaching. The 45-second PSA shows the three at Wembley soccer stadium as they show how the remaining wild rhino population could fit into that space - with plenty of room to spare. The film, titled Whole World, also features a crash of rhinos courtesy of GreenScreen Animals. A second film, Tools of the Trade co-produced with the African Wildlife Foundation, features action star Jackie Chan, Spike (a white rhino) and a computer-generated rhino made of weapons.

The Duke of Cambridge is going into the wild with his first big charity initiative since revealing that he is leaving the armed forces. William will join various initiatives that build on wildlife conservation, which he famously holds dear, the palace has announced. The prince, 31, has made videos with David Beckham and basketball star Yao Ming to highlight the campaign to reduce demand for rhino horn and ivory. And he is hoping to use the Royal Foundation, which he set up with brother Harry and with which wife Kate became involved after their 2011 marriage, to foster cooperation among seven conservation organizations.

Prince William Gets Help From David Beckham on Wildlife PSA Ahead of Tusk Conservation Awards Speech
Prince William and David Beckham are both pretty powerful, but together? They're unstoppable! So it's a great thing for Mother Earth that these British gents teamed up on behalf of WildAid to record two public services announcements to protect the world's wildlife. On Thursday, Sept. 12, William and David recorded messages aimed at reducing the demand for rhino horn and ivory, especially in China and Vietnam. The messages, which also feature retired NBA athlete Yao Ming, will air later in 2013 as part of WildAid's demand reduction campaign. William's passion for wildlife and conservation is clearly important to him. During a clip from Prince William's Passion: New Father, New...

Would you buy wine from Carlos Santana?
Because the "Evil Ways" bandleader would like to sell you some.
Just like, apparently, every other star on Earth.
Forget celebrity clothing lines. Forget perfumes. Forget shoes (although Santana has an oddly cute shoe brand, too). Those are so 2012. This year, if you're a star, you have to be selling wine or you're less relevant than Carrot Top.
Think I kid? Consider: Yao Ming has a winery. Sells wines for something like $289 per bottle.
Real Housewife Ramona Singer is selling wine because she says she couldn't find a decent pinot grigio. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are selling wine because their massive French estate, Miraval, has grapes on it.
Dan Aykroyd is selling wine, and rapper Li'l John is selling wine, and Dave Matthews is selling wine, and Madonna is selling wine, and Olivia Newton-John is selling wine, and Sting is selling wine.

Chen Kaige, who won Palme d'Or in 1993, says air pollution means he is 'unable to focus on my artistic creation'
Some say success is the enemy of creativity; others have blamed the pram in the hall. But one of China's best-known film directors has found a new culprit: smog.
"Cornered by the terrible weather, I have nowhere to go … I am unable to focus on my artistic creation," said Chen Kaige, who won the Palme d'Or for his 1993 film Farewell My Concubine.
His comments reflect growing public concern about China's environmental record, exacerbated by the severe air pollution in Beijing and other areas this winter, water pollution scandals and the government's refusal to release research on soil pollution.
Chen, 61, described the weather as weird, appalling and unbelievable, according to the state news agency Xinhua. He cited the death of a prized jujube tree two years ago as proof of Beijing's deteriorating environment,...

Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan this week joins China's top political advisory body in a move analysts say highlights Beijing's growing "soft power" efforts to project unity between itself and the former British colony.
But the 58-year-old actor, famous in the West for "Rush Hour" and "Police Story", faces a backlash in his hometown where the mainland is viewed with increasing suspicion.
According to professor Sonny Ho, co-director at the Centre for Greater China Studies, Chan was selected to appear at the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (Cppcc) because his stardom could help promote ties.
"Jackie Chan is acting under the soft power and united front of the Prc (mainland) government," he said. The "united front" strategy, he said, was a campaign to promote a strong and peaceful homeland, unified with Taiwan.

It's appropriate that a documentary on Ai Weiwei should open the day the Olympics begin. The artist's troubles can be traced back to the Games four years ago, when Ai rose to international prominence for his work on the Bird's Nest stadium, and then to more dangerous heights when he promptly distanced himself from China's "false Olympic smiles."
Three years, one Sichuan Earthquake and an Arab Spring later, Ai's Big Troubles began. While he was under detention by the Chinese government for 81 days, "Never Sorry" director Alison Klayman became the go-to source for news on his situation, a position she credits to an old roommate and a bit of good timing in an interview with The Huffington Post.
While interest in the news bites surrounding his story has predictably waned since the initial fervor, Ai is still here, with the same, resounding message. This week, he reminded us once again...

China has increased the number of Hollywood imports allowed into the country, but more competition could help free up its homegrown industry
If you judge by headlines, it's been the greatest few weeks for east-west cultural relations since Kurt Russell scoffed chow mein in Big Trouble in Little China. The snappily named Harvest Seven Stars Media Private Equity Fund and the China Mainstream Media National Film Capital Hollywood Group have both been busy strutting around Los Angeles, flashing big cash at film-makers. Dreamworks Animation announced a Chinese division. NBA basketball star Yao Ming was rumoured to be getting the showbiz itch. What's the next move when your name starts to fall off the A list? For a lot of celebrities, it's alcohol. But these celebs aren't landing in rehab -- instead, they're headed straight to the bank with branded liquors and wines.
The latest to join the liquor entrepreneur ranks of Diddy and Dan Ackroyd is teeny rocker trio Hanson (who are all now of age). The Hanson brothers recently announced plans to release their own MMMHop Ipa. In an equally random venture, retired NBA star Yao Ming announced this week that he has created his own wine label, Yao Family Wines, developed exclusively for the booming Chinese wine market.
Sound ridiculous? Some, like Marilyn Manson's self-branded absinthe Mansinthe, are, but other stars, like former Van Halen front man Sammy Hagar have turned hocking booze into a million-dollar payoff. Inspired by Hagar's Cabo Wabo Cantina in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico,...

One of the fastest growing wine markets in the world lies in China and famed ex-nba player Yao Ming looks to bring good wine to his fellow countrymen. He has created his own California winery, named Yao Family Wines, targeted exclusively at the Chinese market.
Ming retired from the NBA recently and has returned to live in Shanghai. During his time in the United States, he was inspired to learn more about wine from fellow player Dikembe Mutombo. Now, his first 5,000 case release, named simply Yao Ming, will go on sale in China for 1,775 yuan (Us $289) a bottle. The wine uses 2009 cabernet sauvignon grapes from Napa Valley. A more limited release, Yao Family Reserve, will be released later this year in a 500 case batch.
French beverage giant Pernod Ricard Sa will distribute the wine. "I really like Napa Valley," Ming said. "California represents vacation, casual [living], sunshine—everything related to a good quality of life.

Leonardo DiCaprio has penned a letter to members of the California State Senate in support of Assembly Bill 376, which would prohibit the sale of shark fins in California.
