A failed bid to acquire the large Simon & Schuster book-publishing operation from Paramount Global could still generate a return: Under terms of the agreement, Penguin Random House has to pay Paramount 200 million.
The two companies agreed to a 2.2 billion sale of Simon & Schuster in November of 2020, but a U.S. District Court ruling issued at the end of October scuttled the deal, which was blocked by a 2021 suit by the U.S. Department of Justice. Now the two sides are preparing to move in different directions.
In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filed Monday, Paramount said it terminated the agreement, and noted that Penguin Random House is “obligated to pay a 200 million termination fee to Paramount.” And it indicated it still wants to dispose of Simon & Schuster, home to authors such as Jennifer Weiner and Stephen King.

Jennifer Weiner began her interview with Judy Blume, one of the most anticipated events of this weekend’s BookCon, by telling the children’s author and national sex-explaining treasure, “In big huge letters at the top of my notes it says Don’T Cry. And I’m gonna cry.” But by the end of the talk it was Judy Blume who cried, telling a story that she’d actually left out of her new novel, In the Unlikely Event (her first for adults in sixteen years). The novel, out Tuesday, revolves around three plane crashes that occurred within less than two months in Elizabeth, N.J., not far from Newark Airport, when Blume was a 14-year-old local. Weiner asked her what she was like in high school. “I was very active,” she said (intending no innuendo). Indeed, she was in the “advanced glee club.” But she noticed at the time...

Jonathan Franzen has always been a guy with a lot of dislikes, particularly when it comes to the internet, technology, and Jennifer Weiner. In a new Q&A with Butler University's journal Booth, Franzen's still got it.On Ya literature: Most of what people read, if you go to the bookshelf in the airport convenience store and look at what's there, even if it doesn't have a Ya on the spine, is Ya in its moral simplicity. People don't want moral complexity. Moral complexity is a luxury. You might be forced to read it in school, but a lot of people have hard lives. They come home at the end of the day, they feel they've been jerked around by the world yet again for another day. The last thing they want to do is read Alice Munro, who is always pointing toward the possibility that you're not the heroic...

Jonathan Franzen’s The Kraus Project, his very liberally annotated translation of Austrian critic Karl Kraus’s essays, has drawn a bit of blowback for Franzen’s cranky and off-topic pronouncements on Jennifer Weiner, Salman Rushdie, and pretty much the entire digital universe (except early Windows and the Lenovo Ultrabook). So far, so predictable: Franzen’s grouchiness isn’t breaking news, and repeatedly denigrating Twitter is a pretty easy way to get attention, even if he may or may not know what “trolling” is. But to his credit, Franzen cops to his own very human (and modern) penchant for hating what the world has come to. And his footnote-diatribe is, after all, a tribute to Kraus, the dyspeptic fin de siècle critic known around Vienna as “the Great Hater.” In honor of Franzen’s self-conscious haterade (and his disdain for Internet listicles), here’s a listicle of virtually everything he...

On "Celebrity Wife Swap," it was quite the blast from the '90s past, as Gilbert Gottfried and Alan Thicke's wives switched places.
But "Growing Pains" star Thicke should’ve looked out, because Gottfried told cameras he was ready to have sex with another woman.
“We should have sex. Yeah, because if this is a swap ... " Gottfried quipped. But Tanya Thicke shot that down fast. “I don’t think it’s that kind of a swap,” she replied.
Gottfried's cheapness was also on display. He likes to shop at 99 cent stores and get free meals where he can. His extreme frugality insulted Alan’s wife Tanya even more than the sex thing, and she walked out when he tried to take her on a date in the kitchen of a restaurant.
But they worked things out, and in the end, the couples both had good experiences.

Gloria Steinem's name has been attached to the Girls debate since late March, when Frank Bruni invoked the legendary activist in an attempt to wrap his mind around the show's "bleak" sex scenes. ("You watch these scenes and other examples of the zeitgeist-y, early-20s heroines of 'Girls' engaging in, recoiling from, mulling and mourning sex, and you think: Gloria Steinem went to the barricades for this?" he wrote.) Since then, countless discussions about Girls' significance, feminist and otherwise, have erupted across the Internet; just this morning, Dunham came under fire for telling the New York Times that she doesn't enjoy "airport chick-lit," an admission that was deemed unsisterly by Jennifer Weiner. So when Vulture caught up with Steinem at last night's Brooklyn Artists Ball, we thought she might be able to weigh in on the Girls argument. Had she seen the show, we asked? It's already been established that (some) smart women love "The Bachelor" and that there are a variety of rockin' "Bachelor"-watching parties said women can throw. However, even if you have a complete distaste for trashy reality television, you may be able to appreciate the entertainment value of Bachelor-related tweets.
The Queen of intelligent (and hilarious) #Bachelor tweeting has to be Jennifer Weiner, author of novels such as "Good In Bed" and "In Her Shoes." She live tweets every episode, spouting out gem-worthy commentary on the contestants, Bachelor Ben, the general ridiculousness of the show and the potential ramifications of watching with her daughter. ("Four-year-old pulled my highest heels out of the closet, announced 'When I am on the #Bachelor program, I will wear these!' #uhoh," she tweeted before last week's episode.) Other stand-out Bachelor tweeters include writer Jennifer Mendelsohn, Jezebel blogger Erin Gloria Ryan and host Chris Harrison -- among others.

We’ve all seen a celebrity agree to live-tweet a TV show he or she is on for one episode. But there’s nothing more pure than a celebrity committing to live-tweet a show he or she is simply a fan of on a weekly basis. Patton Oswalt now does it Sundays with Downton Abbey, drawing attention to details we may have missed (“Not even joking — Matthey Crowley has a f—ing Half Swastika on his cheek! #DowntonPBS”), to the performances (“No One holds back tears like Carson. #DowntonPBS”), and to the level of our shared obsession (“I would pay...

When author Jennifer Weiner set out to cast ABC Family's State of Georgia, the first show she had created, she was looking for a girl who was big in every way. She says she hit the jackpot with Raven-Symoné, but had to re-jigger the character after Raven, who was the plus-sized female with a knack for physical comedy she was looking for, lost 30 pounds.

It’s been ten years since Jennifer Weiner released “Good in Bed,” the book that launched both her career as a novelist and her status as a staunch defender of chick lit. Over the past decade, Weiner has emerged as the conscience of modern fiction, intent on minimizing the disparity between the reception commercial male fiction gets (think Stephen King) and the reception commercial female fiction receives (think Weiner and Jodi Picoult). The biggest news to come out of this holiday weekend (aside from "Snowmaggedon 2," of course) has to be the fact that Natalie Portman is not only engaged (like that isn't big enough news on its own) but also pregnant! Since Portman's a serious actress with a trio of exciting films -- "No Strings Attached," "Your Highness" and "Thor" -- to look forward to in 2011, we wouldn't expect a silly little thing like a baby growing in her belly to slow her down. In fact, we think she should take full advantage of her condition by starring in movies that incorporate her pregnancy.
She wouldn't be the first actress to tackle a role while eating for two. That extra glow in Reese Witherspoon's complexion in "Vanity Fair" wasn't just good lighting, Helena Bonham Carter managed to hide her pregnancy during "Sweeney Todd" beneath those period dresses, and a preggers Penelope Cruz...

Jennifer Weiner may have hit the top of the book lists with her best-selling novels, including “Good In Bed” and “In Her Shoes.” But she’s trading in her pen (okay, laptop) for a microphone and hitting the stage with fellow authors Amy Tan, Dave Barry and Mitch Albom as part of the Rock Bottom Remainders‘ “Wordstock 2010″ tour. Starting in D.C., the writers then head to Philly, New York and Boston, with all the concert proceeds going toward Haitian relief and local non-profit organizations.
Weiner, who is only appearing at Thursday’s Philly stop, spoke to Speakeasy about bringing out her inner rock star, her new love of running (Ok, love might be a reach) and her upcoming book “Fly Away Home,” headed for stores this July.
