New works from Mark Cousins and Cow producer Kat Mansoor are among 35 documentary projects selected for Sheffield DocFest’s MeetMarket pitching forum, which returns as an in-person event for 2022 from June 27-28.
The event will run in-person for the first time since 2019; and will continue online in the days following the festival. The selected titles are a mixture of theatrical features, and projects being made for television.

Chile’s ‘A Fantastic Woman’ editor Soledad Salfate has boarded Costa Rican-Mexican title “Matryoshka” by Maricarmen Merino, which snagged two key awards at the Santiago Documentary Lab of Chile’s Sanfic Industria.
Produced by Merino and Mexican producers Karla Bukantz and Paulina Villegas of Puchunka Cine, “Matryoshka” throws a spotlight on Merino’s mother, Patricia Mora Castellanos, who was born and married into powerful families of Costa Rica’s political left. A trailblazing feminist and activist, Mora Castellanos was the first congresswoman from Costa Rica’s left-wing party and is now running for Vice President of Costa Rica’s communist party. The docu follows Mora Castellanos’ rise in politics following her husband’s death when she took his place to lead the leftist party.

The feature directorial debut of Fernando Urdapilleta, the Mexico City wunderkind behind short film sensation Cosita Linda, will receive its world premiere at the 30th Guadalajara Film Festival (FICG30).
Estrellas Solitarias (Lonely Stars) premieres on March 10 and will screen in the Mezcal competition and the Maguey Lgbtt programme during the event, which runs from March 6-15 in the Mexican state of Jalisco.
Urdapilleta is a graduate of Mexico’s highly regarded Centro de Capacitacion Cinematografica (Ccc) and is hotly tipped after his 2008 thesis film and vagina dentata fable Cosita Linda earned a cult following when it played at more than 60 festivals.
Estrellas Solitarias is backed by Foprocine (Mexican Fund for Quality Cinema) and is a comedy-drama about drag queens in Mexico City. Dana Karvelas and Jorge Arriaga lead the cast.
Henner Hoffman and Karla Bukantz produced and the executive producers are Antonio Urdapilleta and Alejandra Garcia.
