Rocky. Rocky II. Rocky III. Rocky IV….I could keep going and somehow we’ll end with Creed, but that doesn’t matter. What does, however, is who Rocky was inspired after, and what that man has to lay claim to fame.
Chuck Wepner is his name. He’s the man that went fifteen rounds in the ring with the man of the hour, Muhammad Ali. Chuck also happens to be the name of the new film coming out about his life in and out of the ring and show business. Directed by Philippe Falardeau (who had previously directed The Good Lie), the film stars Liev Schreiber as Chuck Wepner, Naomi Watts as Linda, Elisabeth Moss as Phyliss, Jim Gaffigan as John, and Ron Perlman as Al Braverman.
Of course, since this is a dramatic version of real life events, it wouldn’t be a film without having Sylvester Stallone...

I recently got the chance to catch up with prolific Hollywood film composer Corey Allen Jackson. Corey’s career started when he was just a kid, and, as a guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, he’s worked on a long list of both blockbusters and indie classics. His most recent collaboration was with director Philippe Falardeau for Chuck, starring Liev Schrieber. Corey and I discussed his creative process for scoring Chuck and more. How did you begin scoring movies? What led you to scoring Chuck? I’d always loved music, movies and film-scores, but after growing up in a small town I wasn’t sure getting out and doing something bigger was in the stars. It wasn’t until I went to Disney World and heard all of the...

Somehow over the years the Hollywood Music in Media Awards have escaped me. The event's fifth annual slate of nominees were announced today, and it's a pretty standard assortment of names we've been considering at the forefront of this year's Best Original Score Oscar race, from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross to Hans Zimmer to the ubiquitous Alexandre Desplat. The nominees were chosen by an "Hmma advisory board and selection committee," and winners will be voted upon by "music-media industry professionals comprised of select members of the Society of Composers and Lyricists, The Television Academy, the AMPAS Music Branch, Naras, performing rights organizations, film music journalists and music executives," according to the press release. You might raise your eyebrow at something like "Interstellar" being on here when it hasn't been screened for these purposes (or much at all, for that matter). The nominations are also based on hearing music via...

With the feature Hansel & Gretel Get Baked releasing February 19th On Demand and in select cities on February 22nd via Tribeca Film, we thought it time to bring you our interview with the flick’s composer, Corey Allen Jackson.
Prior to becoming the recipient of the Bmi Award for Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television from the University of Southern California, 44-year-old Jackson studied music composition at the La Schola Cantorum in Paris, France, and to date has racked up an impressive list of genre scores, including those for the Steven R. Monroe-directed horror flicks It Waits, Sasquatch Mountain, Left in Darkness, I Spit On Your Grave (2010) and the upcoming MoniKa, among others.
We recently chatted with him regarding his process as well as his approach to scoring director Duane Journey’s Hansel & Gretel Get Baked.

As a young man, he assisted a cross-dressing alien in evading the feds in Spielberg’s 1982 smash-hit E.T. The Extraterrestrial and was told to “Stay gold, Ponyboy,” in Coppola’s 1983 drama The Outsiders. He made famous the battle-cry ‘Wolverines!’ in John Milius’ 1984 Cold War flick Red Dawn and as ‘Jim Halsey’ nearly ate a french-fried finger in director Robert Harmon’s 1986 horror classic The Hitcher. Years later, and with nearly 150 titles to his credit, C. Thomas Howell sat down with us to discuss with candor his varied career as well as his role in Steven R. Monroe’s upcoming feature MoniKa.
