The royal family has dominated the headlines so far in 2024 regarding the health of some senior royals.
It was revealed in mid-January that the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) had abdominal surgery that required a lengthy hospital stay and recovery time at home. Days after Kate’s operation, King Charles was admitted to the same London Clinic hospital and underwent a procedure for an enlarged prostate. It was announced 10 days later that tests found the monarch had cancer and he began receiving treatment.
Now down two senior royals, the family is now stretched pretty thin and feeling the effects of a slimmed-down monarchy which the king’s sister, Princess Anne, never thought was a good idea.

When Natascha McElhone got her big break as an actor, she very nearly blew it. She was fresh out of drama school and appearing in Richard III at the Open Air Theatre in London’s Regent’s Park. It was pouring with rain one evening and, though McElhone didn’t know it, the writer and director James Ivory, of Merchant Ivory fame, had come to watch the show. She had briefly met him a few weeks earlier while reading for a part in his 1996 film Surviving Picasso, a biopic of the artist told from the perspective of the painter Françoise Gilot, who was his lover for a decade. “I had gone in, read a page of the script and was immediately ushered out, so I didn’t think anything of it,” she recalls.
And so, on this rainy night, McElhone was having a post-show drink at the bar when “this...

The storylines in the fifth season of The Crown have provoked much backlash, from scenes showing the former Prince Charles trying to force the Queen’s abdication to others suggesting Prince Philip was unfaithful to the late monarch.
Prominent figures, including Judi Dench, have demanded that the drama carry a disclaimer to make clear that the events of the series aren’t entirely factual. While The Crown actor Jonathan Pryce, has called these reactions to the show “hugely disappointing”, claiming that viewers know it’s a drama, not a documentary.
Some of the storylines in season five are pretty close to the truth. Others, not so much.

On Tuesday, Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip and Prince Charles attended the funeral of Countess Mountbatten of Burma, who survived the Ira bomb that killed her father, Earl Mountbatten, and her teenage son in 1979.
Patricia Mountbatten died peacefully on June 13 at her home in Mersham, Kent. She was surrounded by her children, her family said in a statement. She was 93.
The great-great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria and cousin to Prince Philip was left devastated in August 1979 when the Irish Republican Army (Ira) blew up the family’s boat in Co Sligo, Ireland. Her father, Earl Mountbatten, Charles’s great-uncle and mentor, died instantly.

Princess Diana and Prince Charles‘ marriage breakdown has been making headlines for decades, but a new book claims that the two were at odds long before they publicly announced their separation — with Charles seeking help with their relationship as early as their honeymoon.
Royal writer Sally Bedell Smith claims in her new biography on the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles: The Passions and Paradoxes of an Improbable Life, that a mixture of both the couple’s gaping age difference and Diana’s emotional and mental state put a strain on their romance. She also writes that Diana’s reluctance...

In July 1981, the night before his glamorous wedding to Princess Diana, Prince Charles reportedly wept as he was still torn about his feelings for his former girlfriend (and then-mistress) Camilla Parker-Bowles.
According to Prince Charles: The Passions and Paradoxes of an Improbable Life, a new biography of the Prince of Wales by royal writer Sally Bedell Smith, Charles felt pressured into his marriage to Diana — and he was still torn abut his love for the then-married Camilla.
The story of Charles and Camilla is well-documented — the two dated after being introduced in 1971, beginning a love affair that would make headlines for decades.
