New York -- The producers behind "Next Day Air" will groove to a new dance move.
Melee Entertainment and indie film producer Shariff Hasan are developing a movie that will center on jerkin,' the hip-hop dance trend that has been attracting a host of mainstream coverage.
Melee's Bryan Turner, Scott Aronson and Mike Regen are producing the project along with Hasan, Todd Moscowitz and Mike Mavrolas. Moscowitz runs Asylum Records, which has released a number of jerkin'-themed music, and Mavrolas manages jerkin' act the New Boyz, which is enjoying a hit with the jerkin'-themed "You're a Jerk."
Jerkin,' which has landed coverage in L.A. Weekly and the Los Angeles Times, is a form of dancing that, like breakdancing and other performance art, originated in the streets. But unlike some other forms of street art, it's underlied by a specific political ideology of providing a positive, anti-gang message in the inner city.

Summit is coming up for some Air.
The studio has acquired worldwide rights to "Next Day Air," an action comedy that had been at Paramount, and will release it domestically in May.
Scott Aronson's Melee Entertainment produced the film and co-financed it with Par, which, when it was nearly complete, opted not to release it as part of a larger decision to orient its slate toward bigger tentpole pictures.
"It's the kind of movie that I think if done right can be really profitable," Aronson said. "Paramount decided it didn't want to be in the business of smaller films, but we think Summit is the perfect fit for it."
Mike Epps, Donald Faison, Wood Harris and Mos Def star in the picture, which centers on an illicit package that ends up at the wrong apartment, setting off a set of comedic chain reactions. Music video director Benny Boom helmed...

Melee Entertainment, formed last year by Bryan Turner and Scott Aronson, has reached an agreement with Paramount Pictures to produce music-based films using established recording artists in featured roles. It's the second production pact for the studio with a music-based production entity since former MTV Networks CEO Tom Freston was appointed co-chief operating officer and co-president of Viacom in June. In September, Paramount and MTV Films signed Interscope Geffen A&M chairman Jimmy Iovine and Eminem manager Paul Rosenberg to a three-year, first-look feature deal. The new agreement with Melee foresees the production of six feature-length films over three years, to be released by Paramount on home video. Some films might also be released theatrically. Melee will bring financing to the deal, which includes an option for Paramount to co-finance.
