Netflix has pulled a film from its Indian streaming platform following a backlash from offended rightwing Hindu groups.
Annapoorani: the Goddess of Food tells the story of a young woman from the Brahmin caste, and her aspirations to become one of India’s best chefs. The Guardian reports that the film has been criticised for its depiction of a member of a traditionally vegetarian caste cooking and eating meat. The film has also been criticised for its depiction of Hindu deity Lord Ramthat, implying he ate meat while in exile.
The newspaper reports that Vishwa Hindu Parishad (Vhp), a hardline rightwing Hindu group began spearheading a protest against the film on Wednesday, saying it was “intentionally released to hurt Hindu sentiments.” Protests also occurred outside Netflix offices.
Within 24 hours, The Guardian reports that the film’s makers Zee Entertainment, had apologized, saying the film would be withdrawn and re-edited to prevent any further offence.

“Mississippi Masala” director Mira Nair says she was nervous to ask Denzel Washington to be more vulnerable in his scenes with Sarita Choudhury in the swooningly romantic 1991 drama.
“I fell in love during the making of this film during the writing of the screenplay of this film,” Nair recalled at a Women in Film screening Thursday night at Vidiots. “I experienced what I call the stupor of love. I was really weak-kneed,” she said in a post-screening Q&a. “And that was what I wanted from Denzel and Sarita. Sarita got it, but Denzel… no one talks to him like that,” she said with a smile.
She had hired because of his turn in 1988’s “For Queen and Country,” and said he was nailing every other aspect of the role. “He’s a consummate actor. He is just extraordinary. But when it came to the love stuff, I was wanting more.

British Indian actor Shubham Saraf, who became the toast of London’s theatre circuit playing Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin, Nathuram Godse, in ‘The Father and the Assassin’, will stars opposite Charlie ‘Pacific Rim’ Hunnam and the Sudanese-born English actor Alexander Siddig (Doran Martell in ‘Game of Thrones’) in the upcoming Apple TV+ adaptation of Gregory David Roberts’s bestseller ‘Shantaram’, reports ‘Variety’.
The international bestseller tells the story of a heroin addict and convicted bank robber who, in the 1980s, flees Australia to India, where he reinvents himself as a doctor and a gangster in the slums of Bombay.
Viewers in India will remember Saraf, who studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, as a nawab’s dandy do-gooder son in newly independent India in Mira Nair’s BBC/Netflix adaptation of Vikram Seth’s ‘A Suitable Boy’. He has also played a policeman in the Netflix procedural ‘Criminal: U.

A Suitable Boy, directed by the brilliant Mira Nair, is an epic tale of life and love set in vibrant 1950s India. The 6-hour miniseries, which is streaming exclusively on AcornTV, tells the story of a spirited university student who comes of age in North India in 1951, at the same time as the country is carving out its own identity as an independent nation and is about to go to the polls for its first democratic general election. The stories play out during this most tumultuous period and reflect the wider conflict between tradition and modernity at the time, as the series explores the country and its rich and varied culture at a crucial point in its history – through eye-popping, colorful scenes of ornate wedding and funeral ceremonies, religious festivals and rituals, passionate riots and political fights, and haunting musical performances. The film stars Tanya Maniktala in the lead role,...

Ever since “Mad Men” led to the surfeit of mid-century modern furniture on every design blog, period dramas have been television’s bread and butter — creating an abundance of shows that are as enjoyable for their eye-watering design as for their dramatic storytelling. Hit shows like “The Crown,” “The Queen’s Gambit, and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” may have first lured viewers with their plucky women characters, sure, but the ornate wallpapers and enviable wardrobes kept them coming back for more. No matter how critical these shows purport to be of the elite classes they portray, such candy-colored visuals never fail to add a veneer of romanticism cloaking the sexism, classism, and racism that lurks in the shadows.
Delivering sumptuous visuals of a different ilk is “A Suitable Boy,” a six-part BBC miniseries set in 1950s India, during the country’s first years of independence from British colonial rule. The entire...

In his nearly 1,500-page post-Partition epic A Suitable Boy, one of the longest novels in the English language, author Vikram Seth weaves the stories of two upper-middle-class North Indian families navigating ardor, marital negotiations and politicized religious conflict as their newly independent nation sloughs off the stink of colonial British rule. Falling somewhere between escapist period soap (the bread and butter of its Welsh screenwriter, Andrew Davies) and sensorial family saga (the lifeblood of its Indian-American director, Mira Nair), BBC’s anglicized six-episode A Suitable Boy adaptation seemingly fails to capture the ideological vastness of Seth’s vision, instead opting for accessible ...

A fascination with Vice-President elect Kamala Harris could drive American audiences towards Mira Nair’s mini-series “A Suitable Boy,” the director says.
Based on Vikram Seth’s epic 1993 novel, the series follows the Mehra family and their associates as they go about the process of finding a husband for 19-year-old university student Lata Mehra (newcomer Tanya Maniktala), against the backdrop of the 1951 general elections in newly independent India.
The series aired on the BBC in July and began streaming in several territories on Netflix, excluding North America, in October. AMC Networks’ Acorn TV acquired the series for North America, as revealed by Variety.
“Certainly what we show in ‘A Suitable Boy,’ that extraordinary idealism of the fifties that created a free India and the first elections, is something that I have never seen in America about the sub-continent,” the Indian director tells Variety.

Slowly but surely, India and Indian-ness are foraying the world of showbiz in the West, and much of it has to do with the country's growing presence in the Ott space. The success of Delhi Crime at the International Emmys is, as Shefali Shah rightly said, a cherry on the sundae, but Indian stories and Indian talent of the digital space have been making a strong impact the way Bollywood or our mainstream cinema never really did.
We draw up a list of notable Indian artistes and themes that are carving a space in the worldwide Ott space.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas
Her Hollywood debut and musical sojourns in the West had mixed responses, but her Ott foray in the international arena seems more assured. After "Isn't It Romantic", she will soon be seen in "We Can Be Heroes" and "The White Tiger". The actress has also sealed a two-year multimillion-dollar,...

Mira Nair’s adaptation of Vikram Seth’s best-selling novel A Suitable Boy is creating a storm for Netflix in India after the British-made series depicted a Hindu girl kissing a Muslim boy against the backdrop of a Hindu temple.
Netflix acquired the series in July as part of a deal with BBC Studios, which owns A Suitable Boy producer Lookout Point. The lavish drama — originally made for BBC One and acquired by Acorn TV in the U.S. — is penned by Andrew Davies and tells the story of spirited university student, Lata, coming of age in North India in 1951.
But the show has drawn political fire in India. Gaurav Tiwari, a leader of the youth wing of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, filed a police complaint about the drama for “shooting kissing scenes under temple premises.” The complaint named Monica Shergill, Netflix’s VP of content in India,...

Having worked in a bookstore for much of my university life, I was definitely aware that Vikram Seth’s “A Suitable Boy” was something special. But it did not intrigue me enough to delve into the 1500 pages long acclaimed novel. So, when I heard about the BBC mini-series, I was quite excited to find out what the fuss was all about. The excitement grew even more when Mira Nair’s name was mentioned. A maker par excellence, I was really keen to see her flaunt her talent in this long film format. And that she did. The fact that A Suitable Boy still manages to stay with you long after the 6th and final episode concludes, despite its glaring flaws is a huge compliment to the maker.
What are those glaring flaws you ask? Well, on a key aspect of a piece of cinema, language. Set in 50s India, the characters speak English.

New Delhi, Oct 25 (Ians) Budding actress Tanya Maniktala felt a personal connection with many Partition plot points in A Suitable Boy, the Mira Nair web series where she has a starring role and which has currently made her a talking point.
Tanya grew up with stories from her grandfather, who is originally from Lahore, about coming to India after Partition with a new sense of home and identity. The actress says working in the series, which touches upon several similar themes, was all about bringing home the same feelings.
"His (her grandfather) home would always be defined by Pakistan. When I was a young kid, even though I don't remember a lot of stories, the way he spoke about his home, his identity -- they all shaped through the pre-Partition era. For me, it was a sense of bringing home the feeling that my grandfather had, stories he told and his childhood.

Review While Tabu and Ishaan Khatter shine in their respective roles, the English dialogue sticks out as unpalatable.Geetika MantriScreenshot/NetflixIndian parents’ desire to find a suitable match for their children is the stuff of legends – you’ll find references in folklore and mythical tales, in documented history, in fiction and in reality. So when you hear the phrase A Suitable Boy, it’s not hard to imagine what it will entail. In this case, the plot is premised on a widowed woman determined to find a match for her young daughter. Based on Vikram Seth’s massive novel, the BBC adaptation of A Suitable Boy, directed by Mira Nair and written by Andrew Davies, released on Netflix on Friday. With a runtime of six hours split into six episodes, the series follows Lata Mehra (Tanya Maniktala), a young English literature student in the fictional town of Brahmpur, whose mother,...

One of two things happen when Mira Nair tries making an Indian film in India. She crafts a story that is beautifully authentic and inspired by India that is (think Salaam Bombay! or Monsoon Wedding). Or, she tries recreating an India that was, in which case the outcome is beautifully plastic (think Kama Sutra).
Mira Nair's new web series talks of an India that was. The show diligently tries to belong to the former lot, but tends to gravitate to the second category.
Maybe it was the challenge of adapting Vikram Seth's book of the same name. A massive work of fiction comprising nearly six lakh words would seem difficult to capture in six episodes.
Or maybe, just as it was blatant in the case of Kama Sutra, Nair was out making an Indian film in India for the West.

The stage adaptation of Nair’s 2001 Venice Golden Lion winning film was due to open this summer in the U.K. at the Leeds Playhouse and London’s Roundhouse immediately after, but the spread of the coronavirus pandemic scuppered those plans.
Speaking at a virtual masterclass during the ongoing Busan Film Festival, Nair said, “We are going to open next year, November 2021. First in India, and then in Singapore, and Dubai, perhaps, and then bring it to London and the United States.”
“It’s a wonderful musical with music from Vishal Bhardwaj, one of our great composers, 21 new songs,” said Nair. “It is very, very close to the film in spirit, but it’s a stage musical. And that’s the something that I have been...

Mumbai, Oct 22 (Ians) Vijay Varma plays Rasheed the Urdu teacher in the Mira Nair-directed web series, A Suitable Boy, and he says he had to work hard to get the diction and articulation right.
"Rasheed is an Urdu teacher, so I had to focus on pronunciation and articulation of words and sentences. I spent a lot of time on research, listening to Urdu audio clips and also trained with an Urdu dialect coach to sink into the character. Urdu is a beautiful and pure language and, if not spoken correctly, it won't have impact. Rasheed's character is complex and layered, and he has his journey and struggles to deal with, which are revealed through the course of the story," said Vijay.

Mumbai, Oct 15 (Ians) Actor Ram Kapoor says his role in the upcoming series, A Suitable Boy, came with various shades and challenges.
In the series, he plays Mahesh Kapoor, father to Maan, the protagonist played by Ishaan Khatter. Mahesh is a veteran politician, who is fighting to set things right in the country and bring harmony. With the project, Ram reunited with filmmaker Mira Nair after working with her in "Monsoon Wedding" and "Words With God".
"It was a challenging role. My character has multiple shades and layers. He has a vision for everything -- the country, his sons, himself. I feel that he is one of the most truthful characters in the series. He is trying to do the right thing," Ram said.
"That being said, he also has his flaws. His relationship with his younger son, Maan, is quite real and raw. I had a great time shooting with Ishaan.

“A Suitable Boy,” the six-part series based on Vikram Seth’s 1993 novel, is set against the backdrop of 1950s India, a country finding its identity as a nascent democracy and following its partition into two countries, India and Pakistan. Filmed on location in northern India with a cast of over 100 Indian actors, it has already been regarded as a groundbreaking example of inclusive storytelling: it’s the first BBC period drama to star an all non-white cast.
So, when it was announced in 2017 that Welsh screenwriter Andrew Davies would be adapting the book into a series, critics raised concerns about whether a white writer could — or had the right to — effectively tackle such culturally specific material.
The criticism was not unwarranted, said director Mira Nair. “I understood when it came out that we were now at the rage of this moment where this has to be questioned, as always is the case,...

Among an impressive list of U.K. projects to debut at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival, two of the most high-profile are TV dramas — underscoring how British scripted series are now rivalling the country’s proud tradition for indie cinema in terms of creativity, and — some might argue — even eclipsing it.
Psychological thriller “The Third Day” stars Jude Law and Naomi Harris, and is set on a mysterious British Island. With backing by HBO and Sky, the inventive six-parter is created by Felix Barrett, the founder and artistic director of renowned theater group Punchdrunk, and Dennis Kelly, the writer of “Matilda the Musical” and cult TV show “Utopia.”
Meanwhile, BBC-backed “A Suitable Boy” sees “Monsoon Wedding” and “The Namesake” director Mira Nair make her television debut with the adaptation of Vikram Seth’s classic novel set in 1950s India. Adapted by Andrew Davies, the doyen of period TV drama, “A Suitable Boy...

The Toronto International Film Festival has announced its 2020 lineup of 50 new features, a dramatically smaller selection than last year, where the typically stuffed festival hosted more than 300 titles. Nevertheless, the festival program — which is expected to take place as a combination of virtual screenings and physical premieres, but no press and industry — features plenty of recognizable names.
As previously announced, Spike Lee’s “David Byrne’s American Utopia” will open the festival, which today announced it will close with a special presentation Mira Nair’s latest, the miniseries “A Suitable Boy,” based on Vikram Seth’s novel of the same name.

This spoiler-free review is based on the first two episodes.
Immediately, BBC One’s new period drama A Suitable Boy depicts the many faces of newly independent and post-partition India in 1951. Episode one’s opening scene dives right into a vibrant traditional Indian wedding. The use of rich colour, beautiful music and the Lucknow setting blend to depict the optimism and beauty of India finding its freedom. It is a joyful celebration of Indian culture, introducing the viewer to an array of different personalities, from 19-year old Hindu Lata (played by newcomer Tanya Maniktala), whose rejection of arranged marriage differentiates her as a non-conformist, to the mischievous Maan (Ishaan Khatter) and the anglicised Arun (Vivek Gomber), whose character reminds the viewer of the remnants of British colonial rule in India.
As the first episode goes on, the family connections become easier to grasp, but at first the sudden introduction to so many characters is overwhelming.

This Sunday the 26th of July sees the start of BBC One’s new six part series A Suitable Boy. Based on Vikram Seth’s novel of the same name – at 1,349 pages, one of the longest books ever to be published in English – it’s both the first screen adaptation of the novel and the first BBC drama with an all-Indian cast. The six-part series has broken barriers for diversity and inclusion, and provided a showcase for South Asian actors on the BBC, as well as attempting the daunting task of doing justice to Seth’s well-loved book.

“Gentleman Jack” star Suranne Jones has optioned the memoir of five-time female world boxing champion Jane Couch, with a TV adaptation in the works through her fledgling production outfit TeamAkers Productions and “Les Misérables” producer Lookout Point.
