When Game of Thrones TV series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss set out to craft an epic series called 3 Body Problem, an adaptation of a trilogy of sci-fi novels written by Chinese author Liu Cixin, for the Netflix streaming service, they were hoping to get four seasons out of the material. But when the first season of 3 Body Problem started streaming in March and pulled in a sizeable but underwhelming number of views, some began to question whether or not Netflix would want any more episodes of the big budget show. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Netflix has indeed ordered more episodes – but just enough to allow Benioff, Weiss, and co-creator Alexander Woo to wrap up the story. Exactly how many episodes that will be has not yet been revealed.

Deadline reports that Apple TV+ has cancelled Constellation after one season. The sci-fi psychological thriller series starred Noomi Rapace as an astronaut who returns to Earth after a disaster in space, only to find that key pieces of her life seem to be missing.
The first season of Constellation wrapped up its eight-episode run in March, and unfortunately for fans, it sounds like there are quite a number of plot threads left hanging now that the series has been cancelled.
Along with Rapace, Constellation also stars Jonathan Banks, James D’Arcy, Julian Looman, William Catlett, Barbara Sukowa and Rosie and Davina Coleman. The show, which was created and written by Peter Harness, dealt with “one woman’s desperate quest to expose the truth about the hidden history of space travel and for her to recover all that she has lost.“

FX spent years developing their adaptation of James Clavell’s Shōgun, which ranks as the most expensive scripted show the studio has ever done, but it all paid off big time with rave reviews and an impressively large audience. Despite being billed as a limited series, it’s possible that Shōgun season 2 could happen.
Deadline reports that Hiroyuki Sanada, who starred as Lord Yoshii Toranaga and also produced the series, has closed a deal to return for a potential second season. Nothing is set in stone, but FX hopes to get their ducks in a row for more Shōgun. THR added that there are “other extenuating circumstances” to overcome before FX can formally greenlight a second season. The show was the network’s biggest Hulu premiere, with 9 million streaming views globally spread across Hulu, Disney+ and Star+ in its first six days of availability.

Taylor Sheridan will continue his reign over at Paramount+ as one of his new shows at the streamer has just been given the greenlight for continuation. Deadline is reporting that Lioness, which previously held the title Special Ops: Lioness, has just been renewed for a second season. The show starred an all-star cast, including Zoe Saldaña, Nicole Kidman, Laysla De Oliveira, Michael Kelly and Morgan Freeman.
Lioness became a smash hit for Paramount+ as it would set a new record as the platform’s most watched worldwide series premiere on launch day that totaled nearly 6 million total viewers in its first week across Paramount+ globally, as well as on a linear preview on the Paramount Network. The first season of Legendary’s MonsterVerse TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters ran on Apple TV+ from November into January (you can read our own Alex Maidy’s review of the first batch of episodes Here), and while Godzilla was an important figure in that season, it wrapped up with an episode that indicated Kong might be taking the spotlight if there were to be a follow-up. Earlier this month, it was confirmed that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will indeed be getting a second season – and during an interview with Screen Rant, cast member Anna Sawai said she’s hoping to get to work on season 2 very soon.
When asked for an update on the status of the show, Sawai said, “I can’t tell you anything, because I actually don’t know what’s going on. I literally got the call that it’s going to be renewed,...

An adaptation of Liu Cixin’s sci-fi trilogy, 3 Body Problem, is an ambitious project. However, Game of Thrones writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were up to the challenge. The source material is dense enough to make for compelling television and the first season would prove to be a new hit for Netflix as the show cracked the Top 10 on the platform. The series has received generally positive reviews, but our own Alex Maidy didn’t exactly love it. “I found it very hard to engage with this story, these characters, and this series,” Maidy wrote. Paramount Pictures is going full steam with its Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise by attaching some of Hollywood’s hottest stars to voice iconic characters from the expanding Sega series. It broke the internet when Idris Elba said he was voicing Knuckles the Echidna for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. I could hear the rapturous screams from my office in Canada as fans of the Blue Blur rejoiced. Now, Paramount is rekindling the fire by bringing Keanu Reeves into the fold as Shadow the Hedgehog for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Speaking about Reeves joining the cast, Idris Elba believes it was his destiny to work alongside the John Wick actor, and he couldn’t be happier about his good fortune.
“I’m a big fan of his,” Elba said about Keanu Reeves in an interview with IGN. “I’ve heard that he’s a fan of mine, and we are destined to make something together.

Tom Ripley remains one of the most enigmatic characters to ever cross from literature to both the big and small screen, with a wealth of portrayers – from Alain Delon to Andrew Scott – bringing Patricia Highsmith’s character to life. With Ripley out on Netflix, one of the stars of 1999’s The Talented Mr. Ripley, Jude Law, has some major praise for the latest adaptation. (You can also read our own Alex Maidy’s 9/10 review here.)

If Michael Douglas had his way, Hank Pym would have been killed off in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
The actor was on The View promoting his Apple TV+ series, Franklin, where he was asked about wanting his character to die in Quantumania. “This actually was my request for the third one,” Douglas explained. “I said I’d like to have a serious [death], with all these great special effects. Douglas continued, “I want to use all those effects. But, that was on the last one. 3 Body Problem has landed on the top spot of Netflix’s Top 10 list with 15.6 million views, but is it good enough for a series which reportedly boasts a price tag of $20 million per episode?
To put it in comparison, Avatar: The Last Airbender debuted in the number one spot upon its release with 21.2 million views. The show would be dethroned by The Gentlemen, which debuted to 12.2 million views and rose to 20.1 million views the following week. The sun sets on yet another Netflix production, as it has been announced that The Brothers Sun has been canceled after just one season.
The Brothers Sun received high praise for its handling of material both intense and sweet, but as we all know that is hardly ever enough to ensure a series gets a second season. And so those that watched the series will only ever have those eight episodes, which all hit Netflix at the beginning of the year.
Co-created by Byron Wu and frequent Ryan Murphy collaborator Brad Falchuk, The Brothers Sun was a perfect follow-up to Everything Everywhere All at Once for Michelle Yeoh, as it also meshed genres (though not as wildly) and gave the star a space to expand her Western audience base. If there’s one positive thing even the many people he’s had feuds with might say about Vin Diesel, it’s that when he latches onto a character or concept, he doesn’t let them go. He may have skipped the first sequel to The Fast and the Furious, but once he did return to the role of Dominic Toretto, he made sure the sequels kept reaching theatres at a fast and furious pace. Few movie-goers seem to care about the Richard B. Riddick character beyond Pitch Black, but that hasn’t stopped Diesel from continuing to push sequels forward – and apparently Riddick 4 isn’t far off from production. Then there’s his 2015 fantasy/action film The Last Witch Hunter, which didn’t gain a lot of fans (although JoBlo’s own Alex Maidy dug it). Diesel liked it, so we might just get a The Last Witch Hunter...

Just one week after it was announced that Foundation would resume filming after some issues involving budgetary and production concerns, the Apple TV+ sci-fi series has hit yet another snag, as co-creator David S. Goyer is stepping down from showrunner duties for the third season.
While Goyer will still be “creatively involved”, his position is being relegated to executive producer Bill Bost, although Goyer himself will still receive credit on Foundation. This may reasonably raise concerns for those who have been loyal to Foundation, as such a shakeup may point to even more significant behind-the-scenes problems, especially since it had previously been revealed that Goyer wouldn’t be directing any episodes of the third season, having helmed three episodes of the show’s first 20. One could possibly begin to deduce that these mounting issues may see even less involvement from Goyer, whose screenwriting credits include writing Batman Begins, Man of Steel and Terminator: Dark Fate.

One could possibly begin to deduce that these mounting issues may see even less involvement from Goyer, whose screenwriting credits include writing Batman Begins, Man of Steel and Terminator: Dark Fate.

Just yesterday, we heard that Tigers Are Not Afraid filmmaker Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all six episodes of the fourth season of the HBO anthology crime series True Detective (a season that’s known as True Detective: Night Country) “might” come back to do another season of the show. Now it’s a sure thing. Variety has broken the news that HBO has ordered True Detective season 5, and López, who has just secured new overall deal with the network, will be back at the helm.
True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto was the mastermind behind the first three seasons of the show, but once the third season wrapped up, his HBO deal expired and he signed a new (short-lived) deal with FX. HBO retained the ownership rights to True Detective, and with Pizzolatto gone they were interested in bringing in someone who had “a fresh voice with a different...

True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto was the mastermind behind the first three seasons of the HBO anthology crime series, but he wasn’t creatively involved in the latest season, True Detective: Night Country, despite retaining an executive producer credit on the show – and he repeatedly let it be known that he wasn’t a fan of how the show was going in his absence. True Detective: Night Country comes to us from Tigers Are Not Afraid filmmaker Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all six episodes of the season, and despite Pizzolatto’s objections, this season was able to draw in enough viewers that it became the most-watched season of the show, with Deadline reporting that it averaged 12.7 million cross-platform viewers, with 3.2 million checking out the season finale on the day of its release. So it’s no surprise to hear that López might be coming back for more True Detective.

Now that True Detective: Night Country has wrapped up its six-episode run, Nic Pizzolatto is taking another jab at the anthology series he created.
Following the season finale of True Detective: Night Country, Nic Pizzolatto chose to commemorate the occasion by sharing negative reactions from fans on Instagram. Those reactions called the latest season a “hot mess” that was “disrespectful and insulting” to Pizzolatto’s work. Night Country did make a few connections to the first season of True Detective, including a repeat of the “time is a flat circle” line, but that caused certain fans to accuse showrunner Issa López of butchering Pizzolatto’s dialogue.

Masters of the Air is the newest tribute to World War II veterans from Spielberg and Hanks. All of their projects on the subject, including Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers and The Pacific, concentrate on different aspects of the Great War and make for good viewing companion pieces. As the new series follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany, the review from our own Alex Maidy spoke highly of the show. He stated, “It is unlikely that any series will equal the acclaim that Band of Brothers achieved. Still, the blend of feature film directors and a cast of actors more than up to the task, Masters of the Air is a powerful companion to that HBO series and ranks slightly higher than The Pacific.

There will be no second season of Obliterated as Netflix has canceled the action comedy series after just one season.
Obliterated follows a special forces team assembled to stop a deadly terrorist network from blowing up Las Vegas. After completing their mission, they celebrate with a night on the town, filled with sex, drugs, and booze, only to discover that the nuclear bomb they neutralized was fake. They must fight off their hangovers to find the real bomb and save the city for real. The series was created by Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, best known for Netflix’s Cobra Kai series.
Considering that Obliterated spent six weeks on Netflix’s Top 10 for English-language series following its debut last November, the cancelation comes as something of a surprise, but streaming services have been much more frugal lately. The series was originally given a straight-to-series order by TBS in...

Idris Elba will be taking to the skies again as his 2023 series, Hijack, has now been renewed by Apple to have a follow-up season for their streaming service, according to Deadline. Told in real-time, Hijack is a tense thriller that follows the journey of a hijacked plane as it makes its way to London over a seven-hour flight, and authorities on the ground scramble for answers. The series comes from George Kay and Jim Field Smith.
The first season was a hit as it became one of the most-viewed dramas on AppleTV+ and would even crack the Nielsen Streaming Originals Top 10 list. Fans of Nathan Fielder know how a little bit too good he is at making you feel uncomfortable. The comedic actor has an incredibly dry delivery with the bravery and commitment of someone like Sasha Baron Cohen, whom Fielder has actually worked with on Who is America? Fielder’s Comedy Central show, Nathan For You, brought his illustrious brand of cringe comedy to a grand audience, and HBO’s The Rehearsal took it to a new level. Recently, Fielder has partnered with Benny Safdie to try his hand at more scripted narrative comedy with the abstract Showtime series The Curse, which paired Fielder up with Emma Stone.
The response to The Curse has been naturally divisive. However, one vocal supporter of the show, whom people may not have seen coming is Christopher Nolan. According to Variety, the Academy Award-nominated director of Oppenheimer recently moderated a Q&a for the show...

Bong Joon-ho’s highly anticipated sci-fi movie Mickey 17 starring Robert Pattinson was originally slated to hit theaters this March, but Warner Bros. has pulled the film from the schedule. However, the release date was quickly filled by Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, with the MonsterVerse sequel jumping from April 12th to March 29th.
According to Deadline, the reason for Mickey 17‘s change is “due to shifts in production amidst last year’s strikes,” but a new release date should be announced soon. The new release date for Godzilla x Kong gives the film little competition, although it will hit theaters just a week after the release of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

The time has finally come for Marvel Studios‘ newest outing, which has been collecting hype — good and bad. Echo has a lot on its plate. It will be the first title, which is the launch of the company’s Marvel Spotlight banner. This will be their platform for “more grounded, character-driven stories” that don’t require a knowledge of “larger MCU continuity.” Plus, it has been touted as a more gritty, violent project that would rival previous shows like Daredevil and The Punisher. It will even re-introduce Daredevil and Kingpin in an effort to connect to the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again. The review embargo has lifted, and reactions are now hitting social media.

And I figure, hell, even if I’m dead, my son Phlox Jr. is still around, and he is the spitting image of his old pop.

The revival of Night Court on NBC has actress Melissa Rauch of The Big Bang Theory pick up the gavel at the courthouse as the daughter of Harry Stone. All three are avid fans of the original series and have an invested interest in making this series feel like a worthwhile successor to the sitcom without turning it into a woke recreation…Showrunner and writer Dan Rubin, a veteran of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Scrubs, keeps his staff on the ball with episodes that are as wacky as the original series and consistently feel like they could have been storylines thirty years ago.”

Mark Wahlberg’s The Family Plan debuted on Apple TV+ last week, and according to Deadline, it currently stands as the most-viewed movie in the history of the streaming service.
Apple TV+ didn’t provide any numbers for viewership of The Family Plan, so we’ll just have to take their word for it. The action comedy stars Mark Wahlberg as a suburban dad and car salesman named Dan Morgan, whose secret past as an elite government assassin comes back to haunt him. “When enemies from his past track him down, Dan packs his unsuspecting wife (Michelle Monaghan), angsty teen daughter, pro-gamer teen son and adorable 10-month-old baby into their minivan and takes off on an impromptu cross-country road trip to Las Vegas,” reads the synopsis. “Determined to protect his family — while treating them to the vacation of a lifetime — Dan must put his long-dormant skills into action, without revealing his true identity.

Reacher season 2 is now upon us. The Lee Child literary character returns for another case and this new batch of episodes is based on another novel in the book series, titled Bad Luck and Trouble, the 11th installment in the ongoing franchise. In the review from our own Alex Maidy, he says, “Everything about the second season of Reacher is an improvement over the first, a rarity on television. More often than not, shows enter a sophomore slump by trying to double down on what made the first season work well…This season is more fun, funnier, and worth investing in than the last time around and will surely build new fans for the franchise.” You can read his full take Here.
Alan Ritchson is the breakout star of Reacher, and after Tom Cruise’s cinematic interpretation, Ritchson is seen as a more faithful adaptation to Child’s description of the character.

Platonic season 2 is a go!
JoBlo’s own Alex Maidy gave the first season of the show an 8/10 review you can read at This Link. He described the show as “light and enjoyable” and said “hanging out with Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen for half-hour segments is full of laughs”. In fact, there were enough hilarious moments in each episode, he felt it made up for the narrative shortcomings in the series. I haven’t seen Platonic yet myself, but Alex’s review has definitely made me want to check it out.
