Dubai, Aug 21 (Ians) Focus will be on top stars Parmjeet Kumar and Shakina Khatun when a 20-member Indian team launches its campaign in the 2023 World Para Powerlifting Championships starting here on Tuesday.
Having prepared well for the mega event, the Indians are ready to produce a powerful performance.
Parmjeet, the 31-year-old, is the first-ever Indian to win a World Championships medal in the sport when he claimed a bronze at Tbilisi in 2021. With more experience in the last two years, he would be aiming to improve the colour of his medal in men’s up to 49 kg.
Shakina Khatun, the Cwg and Asian Para Games medallist in the women’s up to 50 kg, aims for a good performance to get ready for the Asian Para Games in October and qualify for the Paris 2024 Paralympics.

New Delhi, Dec 15 (Ians) Indian team started its campaign at the Fazza 12th Dubai 2022 Para Powerlifting World Cup on a strong note with their star players Parmjeet Kumar and Shakina Khatun claiming a silver and a bronze medal, respectively.
While Kumar, a Commonwealth Games and Worlds bronze medallist, settled for the second after a successful list of 165kg in the men’s up to 49 kg. He finished behind Paralympic champion Omar Qarada from Jordan who had a Best Lift of 176kg.
“It was a good performance. I am happy with my lift of 165 kg which I have targeted coming to the competition in Dubai. There’s work needed to be done on my technique and to do even better at the Asian Para Games,” Kumar told the Paralympic Committee of India.
Khatun, meanwhile, settled for the bronze medal with her only successful lift of 90kg in women’s upto 50kg weight category.

Sudhir will be joined by former World Championships bronze medallist Parmjeet Kumar (men’s up to 65kg), Paralympians Farman Basha (men’s upto 54kg) and Shakina Khatun (women’s up to 45kg) in the 13-member Indian team who will be seeking for the all-important world ranking points in the qualification to Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
“This year has been very good. I want to continue the momentum and qualify for the Paris 2024 Paralympics in under 97kg, which is my main target here in Dubai,” said Sudhir, who will compete against the likes of Paralympic champion Jordan’s Abdelkareem Khattab and local star Mohammed Khamis Khalaf in the category.
