The Directors Guild of America’s 74th annual DGA Awards are under way at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, with Judd Apatow on tap as host. The ceremony returns to an in-person event this year, having gone virtual in 2021, and is part of a busy weekend on the kudos gauntlet that also includes the BAFTA, Annie Awards and Critics Choice events.
This year in the motion pictures category, the group nominated Kenneth Branagh for “Belfast” (Focus Features), Jane Campion for “The Power of the Dog” (Netflix), Paul Thomas Anderson for “Licorice Pizza” (MGM/United Artists Releasing), Steven Spielberg for “West Side Story” (20th Century Studios) and Denis Villeneuve for “Dune” (Warner Bros).
Campion has already made history as the second woman ever to receive a second nod from the Directors Guild (following “The Piano” in 1993).

Over the weekend, specifically on Saturday night, two big precursors went down. The Directors Guild of America Awards and the Annie Awards were held, help to solidify two Oscar categories. Yes, as you’ll see, there’s now no mystery left about what the Academy Awards will cite in the Best Director and Best Animated Feature races. Frankly, there hasn’t been for some time now, but the last pieces of the puzzle were put together on Saturday. Those two categories are coronations now, and rightly so, quality wise. With DGA being the final Guild, that also really does launch us firmly into Phase Two, where members of the Academy will be making their final decisions about who and what will receive Oscar gold. Directors Guild of America President Thomas Schlamme today announced the nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Television, Commercials and Documentary for 2017. “Directors are driving the push to more distinctive television, eye-catching commercials and powerful documentaries,” said Schlamme in an official statement. “From 30-second spots to multi-hour mini-series, the nominees across these nine categories are leading that charge. We are proud to honor the tremendous range of excellence found in the projects nominated today.”
