Ava DuVernay will headline a fundraiser for Cory Booker’s Senate reelection campaign on Wednesday.
Booker’s re-election is widely predicted, as he faces Rik Mehta, a biotech entrepreneur. But the New Jersey incumbent has long ties to the entertainment industry that extend to his days as the mayor of Newark. Booker and DuVernay both have become champions of criminal justice reform.
The event’s ticket price starts at $50 per person and rises to $5,000 for those who want to be listed as co-chairs.
Among those on the host committee for the virtual event are Emily Deschanel, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Michael and Lydia Kives, Bari Mattes, Erik Moore and Chuck Ortner.
According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Booker has raised almost $700,000 from entertainment industry sources for his campaign, placing him in the top 10 among all Democrats.
The event is among several fundraisers planned in the last week before the election that include showbiz figures.

Since the Save Our Stages Act was introduced in July, bipartisan Congressional support has continued to grow - even through the August Recess. Representatives Brendan Boyle, Matt Cartwright, Michael Doyle, Dwight Evans, Brian Fitzpatrick, Connor Lamb and Susan Wild are among the 147 U.S. Senators and Representatives who have signed on as co-sponsors of the legislation to date, which is aimed at providing relief to independent live venues, promoters and festivals across the nation have been shuttered with no revenue and high overhead since March with no timeline for reopening.

Michael Cusumano here to nominate a New Classic that doesn't get discussed much around these parts.
Scene: Self-surgery
Nolan’s Batman trilogy is supposed to be the grounded version of the Bruce Wayne mythology, but really, that movie arrived eight years later in the form of Jeremy Saulnier’s Blue Ruin.
Like Bruce Wayne, Blue Ruin’s Dwight Evans (played memorably by Macon Blair) finds himself unable to process the murder of his parents. Unlike the Caped Crusader however, the trauma doesn’t set him on the path to becoming a crime-fighting ninja, so much as it leaves him a haunted vagrant who survives by trash-picking down by the boardwalk. When he embarks on a spree of vigilante retribution, Dwight has no lofty ideas about the betterment of society. It’s more of an indirect suicide attempt...

Donald Trump‘s inauguration won’t be a star-studded affair on Friday — and it’s shaping up to be skippable by many politicians as well.
Though he won the Electoral College by 306 votes to Hillary Clinton’s 236, he’s starting off his presidency with the lowest approval rate in decades — just 40 percent, according to a CNN/Orc survey. (Before he took office in early 2009, Barack Obama’s approval rating was 84 percent, according to the same survey.)
That disapproval has seeped into the Capitol, with 51 members of Congress (at current count) abstaining from Trump’s inauguration and the following festivities.
Most notable is Rep.

Want a quality action film, but you only have an hour and a half? Step this way...
Looking back over the genre, action films definitely haven’t suffered from the trend to make everything longer. They’ve always been pretty long, regularly clocking in at over two hours. Perhaps because of all the slo-mo? But while the sweet spot for action classics seems to be the 100-110 minute mark, there are those that have cut the genre right down to basics, and succeeded all the more for it.
Below is my pick of 25 great action films 90 minutes or under. Even more so than other genres, action crosses many other films - picking a pure ‘action’ flick is all but impossible. So below I’ve chosen films that retain action sequences as their main narrative device, and keep the action at the heart of the movie, rather than as a extra.

It's had a teaser and now buzzy American indie Blue Ruin gets the full trailer treatment. Mood is still king here but there’s more storyline creeping out amid the slow-burn southern atmospherics. Click below to see for yourself. The film follows a hazy character called Dwight Evans (Macon Blair) who returns to his hometown angrier and hairier than he went in. Why? Because bad things have befallen the people he holds dear and he's got payback in mind.'This is a guy who is totally out of his depth,' says Blair of the character. 'At the outset Dwight is scared, hesitant, regretful and devoid of toughness. I did not have to try hard to locate the emotional reality of that. Over the course of the film, he transforms into something else entirely.' See for yourself when Blue Ruin arrives in UK cinemas on May 2.brightcove.createExperiences();So,...

Blue Ruin was shown earlier this year at Sundance, and there was a lot of positive buzz surrounding it. It heard nothing but good things. I really wanted to see it, but unfortunately I wasn't able to get into a screening for it, so I'll just have to wait for another opportunity.
The film was written and directed by cinematographer turned directorJeremy Saulnier, and it stars Macon Blair as Dwight Evans, "a mysterious outsider whose quiet life on the margins is turned upside down when he returns to his childhood home to carry out an act of vengeance. Proving himself an amateur assassin, he winds up in a brutal fight to protect his estranged family."
Blue Ruin looks like a seriously intense movie, and it will be released in theaters and VOD on April 25th.

Make room on your movie radar for Blue Ruin. It’s a Cannes-heralded Us thriller that’s been making waves across the Pond, and those ripples have now reached our fair shores. It has a new teaser trailer that you can watch right here, right now. brightcove.createExperiences(); Directed, written and shot by Brooklyn-based filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier, it’s a revenger that follows an enigmatic type called Dwight Evans (played by Saulnier’s boyhood pal Macon Blair) as he returns to his childhood home spoiling for blood. The teaser is a fittingly moody, atmospheric affair. It sells the central premise – an emotionally ragged character who’s retreated to the margins of society emerges from his hermetic existence with a bloodshot-soul – very effectively. In the spirit of a Winter’s Bone or Martha Marcy May Marlene, Dwight’s past is gradually revealed as the quest to pay back an unnamed crime takes shape.

The World Series kicks off tomorrow night, with the New York Yankees squaring off against the Philadelphia Phillies. But today is an important day in baseball history, especially if you grew up rooting for Dwight Evans in a New England suburb. On October 27, 2004, the Boston Red Sox finally snapped an eight decade run of futility and won their first World Series since 1918, finishing off the St. Louis Cardinals in four straight games. Though it was an emotional run for the Red Sox, the 2004 World Series may be one of the most anti-climatic of all time. In the four game sweep, the Cardinals were never really in any of the games, and the Red Sox had already overcome incredible odds during the American League Championship Series, where they won four straight games after sitting on the brink of elimination against the Yankees. The playoffs that year were full of extra-inning tilts,...
