Influential bebop jazz trumpeter and arranger of the 1940's and 50's, best remembered for his work with the bands of Lionel Hampton and Andy Kirk. Later famously recorded with Charlie Parker and Fats Navarro. His later career was severely encumbered by drug addiction and as a victim of racism.
Survived by his wife, Tina, his two sons, Howard, and David, and two daughters, Dru Ann, and Joylin.
