The creepy kid horror canon is extensive. Often paired with the possession film or another supernatural subgenre, many of these pictures look to mine the common fear of a child with innate evil. For parents, they also tap into the fear that your child is not turning the way you imagined they would–in fact, they may be utterly psychotic.
Co-writer and director Brandon Christensen initially codes his second feature, Z, so that it fits neatly into these trappings. It’s apparent right out of the gate: a textural montage of Joshua (Jett Klyne) illustrates the cerebral and visceral immersion of childhood, where toy planes and trains roar to life with all the hums and throttles of their real-life counterparts. This opening also injects the tiniest hint of menace into youth, quickly teasing tension and the threat of violence before snapping it away.

Many of us have a childhood memory of a monster that we were convinced lived in the closet, under our bed, or in a particularly shadowy corner of our room. It’s funny how, as we age, the shadows simply become shadows and our fears slowly fade. Suppose, however, that the specter in the shadows never really went away… we just no longer had the imagination to see him.
Z chillingly challenges the idea that we can outgrow our deepest fears. The cynicism of adulthood can’t necessarily save you from the things that go bump in the night and our greatest traumas have the power to haunt us forever. Z blurs the line between what is real and what is imagination… and it’s a nightmare.

"He saw you, too..." Shudder has released an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled simply Z, the latest from director Brandon Christensen (of 2017's Still/Born previously). This originally premiered at the Overlook Film Festival last year, and is debuting to watch on Shudder this May. A family find themselves terrorized by their eight-year-old son's imaginary (or not?) friend that he calls "Z". Another tale of "parental terror" from the filmmaker behind Still/Born. The film stars Keegan Connor Tracy, Jett Klyne, Sean Rogerson, Sara Canning, and Stephen McHattie. It doesn't particularly seem like anything we haven't seen before, but the creepy monster reveal is a bit jolting. Horror fans definitely don't want to miss this one. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Brandon Christensen's Z movie, direct from YouTube: A couple is shaken to the core when their 8-year-old son begins hanging out with a creepy and ominous imaginary friend.

Tagline: "Z Wants to Play." Z is the name of an imaginary? monster. Z is also the title to Shudder's latest horror acquisition. From director Brandon Christensen (Still/Born) and writer Colin Minihan, this feature focuses on a young boy and the terror he materializes into reality. Shudder will release this intriguing film in May, Mother's Day weekend. As well, the film stars: Keegan Connor Tracy ("Bates Motel"), Sean Rogerson (Grave Encounters), Jett Klyne and Stephen McHattie. Shot in Canada, the film's available release details are hosted here. The film's trailer shows Joshua (Klyne) and the creature that stalks him. First, it appears as a drawing. Then, it takes a human-like form as it terrorizes an entire family. But, how is this monster coming into existence? Director Christensen has talked about his latest film. Christensen says of the characters: "with Z, we once again have a film about a tortured mother and father,...

The horrors of having an imaginative youngster have been explored countless times with every twist in the book, from The Babadook to Hide and Seek to Mama and Before I Wake. So 2019’s festival fright Z had a high mountain to climb to stand out from the rest. Though it tries to stand out with its own twists on the tale, what really sets Z apart from its cohorts is its scares. Directing from a screenplay he wrote with his Still/Born writing partner, Colin Minihan, Brandon Christensen creates a tormenting fright worthy of mentioning alongside the greats noted above.

This October, the Telluride Horror Show celebrated 10 years of fine horror programming. Held annually in Telluride, Colorado, this film festival prides itself on bringing an eclectic selection of feature films and shorts from the horror genre. In my third consecutive year of attendance, I navigated the programming guide like a veteran and did not sit through one screening that I hated. Here are my thoughts on two heavily psychological terror journeys, Z and 1Br, two of my favorites from the weekend.
Z: I can attest, from personal experience, that parenting is inherently creepy as hell. Children, specifically, are creepy as hell. The entire time you are shepherding this fledgling life you created, you are doubting every decision, overanalyzing every behavior, and unintentionally passing on your own issues. And this is on a good day.
Brandon Christensen's Z takes this already unnerving and relatable foundation and liberally spreads on the layer of an imaginary friend.

Bringing a tidal wave of horror onto the shores of South Florida, the fifth annual Popcorn Frights Film Festival sliced its way into Savor Cinema back in August for nine days of eclectic scares and insightful conversations. Co-founded by Marc Ferman and Igor Shteyrenberg, this year’s Popcorn Frights featured more than 70 films (both feature-length and short form) from around the globe, including 10 world premieres of diverse stories ranging from a comic book serial killer to a dog-sized spider and new twists on Frankenstein. This year’s Popcorn Frights proved that horror has found a loving, long-term home in South Florida, and Daily Dead was lucky enough to attend the festival (and serve on its jury). With many of the festival’s films now being released in theaters and on VOD, we thought this would be a good time to look back at the week of killer screenings that left...

With Scream Factory releasing The Vicious Brothers' Extraterrestrial on Blu-ray today, I had a chance to talk with the filmmaking duo of Stuart Ortiz and Colin Minihan about Extraterrestrial’s origins, working with Michael Ironside, Grave Encounters 3, and more.
Thanks for taking the time to chat today. How did you guys come up with the idea for Extraterrestrial?
Stuart Ortiz: It was actually the first script Colin and I ever came up with, which was about eight years ago now. It’s changed a lot since then, though. Colin and I met on the Internet on a filmmaking web forum, a really early one where people put up clips and stuff. This was in the dial-up era, so a one minute-long clip would take all day to upload. We would post short films we made and we liked each other’s work and started chatting and formed this relationship.

The first season of Bitten performed very well in Canada (where it's produced) and even became Space's highest-rated original series to date. The show performed okay here in the States on Syfy. How will season two do? Will this supernatural series be cancelled or renewed for a third season? If it's a hit in Canada but not in the U.S., will Syfy air future seasons? Stay tuned.

The Vicious Brothers, writer/directors of the two popular Grave Encounters found-footage flicks, turn their hands to a more traditional narrative movie, mixing traditional filming methods with their penchant for Pov shaky-cam, with Extraterrestrial.
Still reeling from her parents divorce, April (Brittany Allen) is dragged back to the vacation cabin she spent fond summers at as a child accompanied by a group of friends. Her trip down memory lane takes a dramatic and terrifying turn when a fireball descends from the sky and explodes in the nearby woods. Lead by her boyfriend (Freddie Stroma), the group venture out toward the crash site and discover the remnants of a ship from another planet along with footprints that suggest its alien occupants are still alive.

I reviewed the original 12 Rounds, which starred the WWE’s John Cena way back in 2009 and now, some four years later, the clumsily titled 12 Rounds 2 is set for a straight to DVD release – bypassing the cinematic release the original received – sans Cena, but with fellow WWE superstar Randy Orton in the lead role. And like it’s WWE Studios stable-mate The Marine (which also starred John Cena), this sequel bares no relation to the original film besides the “rounds” format – featuring all new characters, new situations and a new cast.
This time round (groan) Randy Orton stars as paramedic Nick Malloy, who finds himself caught in a deadly 12-round game of cat and mouse with a vigilante tied to the paramedic’s past. With little time to...

The official trailer for the WWE Studios produced film 12 Rounds: Reloaded has arrived, and as usual – you can check it out in the rest of this report. Guess that the only reason we’re (all) actually interested in this so-called explosive thriller is Randy Orton, who stars as paramedic Nick Malloy & will apparently lead us through the ultimate game of cat and mouse. Or something like that… Let me first inform you that Roel Reiné directed the movie from a script written by David Benullo, and that, beside Orton, the pic also stars Brian Markinson, Cindy Busby, Sean Rogerson and Patrick Gilmore. Now,...

The first Grave Encounters won some minor acclaim early last year when released straight to DVD as it went places that Paranormal Activity wouldn’t dare. Here was a film with a set up familiar to anyone who went to the cinema in the hopes of seeing something in the corner of a static video camera.
The advantage was that Grave Encounters actually went and showed you the supernatural force in all its angry, face twisting glory. The result was a genuinely tense ride that was scary amongst so many low-budget found footage cash-ins that clog the shelves. Barely a year later, the sequel is now available and is something of a mixed bag.
The plot gets all Meta for the sequel and oddly reminds one of Human Centipede 2 in a way. Alex (Richard Harmon) is a film student who reviews films on his YouTube channel. His review of the...

Title: Grave Encounters 2 Director: John Poliquin Starring: Richard Harmon, Dylan Playfair, Stephanie Bennett, Leanne Lapp, Howard Lai, Sean Rogerson, Ben Wilkinson Using Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz’s found-footage horror flick “Grave Encounters” as a self-referential leaping-off point, “Grave Encounters 2″ gathers up a head of loose-limbed steam and bundles it up in a rather impressive technical package, but ultimately fumbles it away on a story that buckles under the weight of layered self-consciousness. Film student Alex Wright (Richard Harmon) is one of many folks obsessed with the original “Grave Encounters,” whose YouTube trailer was a viral sensation. Opinions on the movie are wildly divergent, but some people believe it to have [ Read More ]

Fans of Grave Encounters are well aware that Grave Encounters 2 (review) is now making its way onto the festival circuit and into their homes via VOD. Recently the creators of the series, The Vicious Brothers, spoke with Dread Central about Grave Encounters 2 and more.
Individually known as Stuart Ortiz and Collin Minihan, the guys preferred all their answers be attributed to The Vicious Brothers as a whole to illustrate their one-mindedness about their work. And it's work they have big hopes for. "We wanted Grave Encounters 2 to be our Aliens to Alien. A lot of people say the sequel is a better film," The Vicious Brothers said. "We think the sequel that we've come up with is twice everything we delivered in the first film."

Return to the Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital for another round of scares with Grave Encounters 2! The Vicious Brothers - Colin and Stuart - head back to the asylum nine years after the events of the original Grave Encounters. In this innovative sequel, struggling film student Alex Wright (Richard Harmon) decides to research the original film only to discover that its cast has mysteriously vanished and that no one is willing to talk about it. The plot thickens as Alex receives a strange message from an unknown blogger, who goes by the handle of 'DeathAwaits666,' together with footage that shows lead actor Sean Rogerson (who plays the doomed Lance Preston in the first feature) still alive. Setting out to prove that the first film was real, Alex and his friends venture into the asylum to meet the blogger, determined to avoid the pitfalls encountered by the actors in the first film.

Today the sequel to a much-overlooked shocker hit VOD. I am talking about Grave Encounters 2 and I am really looking forward to renting it this week and seeing what those crazy Vicious Brothers have come up with this time around.
The dudes over at Dread Central were paying attention and noticed a tweet from Tribeca Films that hint at some horror coolness to anyone following some simple instructions and jumping through a couple hoops. Don’t worry, not gonna put you through all that but what it all leads up to is posted below, a hot little clip that is just plain creepy.
I loved Grave Encounters and don’t understand why more fans didn’t embrace it. It’s available for streaming on Netflix so if you have not yet checked out it, remedy that soon will ya.

Here at Dread Central we love when a studio goes out of its way to do something cool for the fans of its movies. That's just the case with Tribeca Film, which has some spooky tricks up its sleeves for Grave Encounters fans!
Earlier today we spotted a tweet from Tribeca Film which read: "Spend October in the asylum. Visit http://bit.ly/GE2666 & press Shift + 666 to unlock hidden #horror. #GE2 #shift666"
Of course we did so, and the link ended up taking us to the Tribeca Film website, where we followed the instructions to press Shift + 666. What happened? What did we see? Hit the link and find out for yourself.

We’ve discussed some found footage recently haven’t we? I’m not sure if I call it a shooting style or a genre. Do I call the camera an actor in the film at this point? Is the camera the next Dracula or Frankenstein? Nah, that’s just pretentious and “artsy” and you know me better then to think I’d feed you lines like “the camera is the actor”… but then again I might just do that. I might say that John Poliquin’s follow up to Grave Encounters as directed by the Vicious Brothers has just that very element much as it can be seen in the first film and any found footage flick worth its wait in camera shake (the sequel is also written by the Vicious Brothers). It’s the twelfth man on the field in football. It’s a player. Does Grave Encounters 2...

I am not a fan of Found Footage movies. Found Footage horror movies? Man, that’s like adding insult to injury. But I continue to understand why they keep cranking these suckers out. Cast: Sean Rogerson, Juan Riedinger, Ashleigh Gryzko, Mackenzie Gray, Merwin Mondesir
These days, it seems like you can't flip on the TV without seeing one of the "reality" shows about paranormal investigations; what started out as a relatively underground hobby that very few people took seriously has blossomed into a full-scale cultural phenomenon.
From the cheesy, scripted introductions to the predictable "oh my god, what was that?!" shrieks after every innocent sound, these shows provide both entertainment and sources of eye-rolling for audiences everywhere. For my part, I do believe in the afterlife, but I also don't think that most spirits are hanging around waiting to ham it up the minute a TV crew arrives.
The movie Grave Encounters has a pretty neat premise, all things considered. It's the tried-and-true formula of found-footage film but set within the boundaries of one of these paranormal research cable shows.

Found footage movies have become very popular recently and are a dime a dozen. This is because they are inexpensive to produce and they can be big money makers. Even ones that don’t make a lot of money seem to turn a profit. The main problem with these found footage movies is that people always question the motives of the people in the movie. Why are they still carrying around the camera? Why don’t they just drop it and find their way out of what ever situation they’re in? The Vicious Brothers, the writing and directing team behind Grave Encounters, have found a way to answer this question, it’s just too bad the answer isn’t a very good one.
