This is a Cheeky, Raucous, Irreverent film that will make most warm-blooded mammals laugh from the first scene, until the last! It is brilliant for a summer night out!
If you are a film or music fan, you most likely have already seen “A Hard Day’s Night” before, however, make a summertime date with the famous Fab Four, and see it again on the big screen, with the new restoration, at an art house cinema, and you really can’t go wrong.
It is necessary to give accolades to the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, because, “if it weren’t for Elvis, there would never have been any Beatles.” John Lennon had admitted, that from the moment he first learned about Elvis and saw all the attention that he was receiving, he wanted to be just like him.
So although, there is no denying that the Beatles changed music forever, it was really Elvis who was the King of their inspiration.
For those who have not seen “A Hard Day’s Night” before, the Beatles had already been a popular recording act, with several Top 20 hits in the U.K., when they arrived in NYC to perform on the Ed Sullivan show on February 7, 1964. A record breaking 73 million viewers tuned in, and the British invasion began.
One month later, across the pond, the film was in the works. The music lover and film producer, Walter Shenson, was brought on by United Artists. Shenson, who had previously worked with Director, Richard Lester, on “The Mouse on the Moon,” mentioned the gist of the project, and Richard jumped at the opportunity.
However, to receive the final green light, the film had to be true to the way the Beatles actually lived, and scriptwriter, Alun Owen, who wrote the television play, “No Trams to Lime Street,” which depicted Liverpool, was chosen.
The film begins with the song “A Hard Day’s Night” playing while the Fab Four are running through town trying to make it to the train station on time before their train departs. Once on board, they start a conversation with an older gentleman, who Paul comments, is his grandfather. John is cheekily trying to snort a Coke (Coca-Cola) bottle up his nose in the background, and a business man wants the train car his way demanding that the windows be closed shut. The laughs just continue from there on out, when the boys are flirting with girls, and the grandfather cunningly tells the young women that the boys are really prisoners. An acoustic version of “I Should Have Known Better” is being played on the train.
Film director, Richard Lester, “relied on improvisation rather than rehearsal, creating a freshness that was clear on-screen.” “Before we started, we knew that it would be unlikely that they could (a) learn, (b) remember, or (c) deliver with any accuracy a long speech. So the structure of the script had to be a series of one-liners,” Lester later stated, “This enabled me, in many of the scenes, to turn a camera on them and say a line to them, and they would say it back to me.”
The result, the bandmates play brilliant, clever, crafty, and smart-alicky versions of themselves.
Lester’s visual style mixed techniques from narrative films, documentary, the French New Wave, and live television to create something that felt, and was, spontaneous. “I have seen directors who write down a list of scenes for the day, and then sit back in a chair while everything is filmed according to plan. I can’t do that. I know that good films can be made this way, but it’s not for me. I have to react on the spot. There was very little structure that was planned except that we knew that we had to punctuate the film with a certain number of songs.”
Recorded at Emi Studios in Abbey Road, London, they cut “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “And I Love Her,” “I Should Have Known Better,” “Tell Me Why,” “If I Fell,” and “I’m Happy Just to Dance with You,” in only three days.

Six years after writing the classic musical Guys and Dolls, composer Frank Loesser introduced audiences to The Most Happy Fella. The show has an often lush, operatic, and nearly-sung-through score — but the book is a dated, borderline racist bit of nonsense about an Italian immigrant vineyard owner in the Napa Valley who talks-a like-a this-a and even refers to himself at one point as “a stupid, ugly, old wop.”
In other words, it’s just the sort of problematic chestnut to get a five-night-only revival this week as part of the New York City Center Encores! series, a two-decade-old program...

Anthony Perkins in Goodbye Again
Happy birthday to the man I call my Time Machine Husband (Tm), Anthony Perkins. The effete, beautiful actor best known for his astonishing performance as Norman Bates in Psycho would've been 81 today, and without even reading Charles Winecoff's gripping biography Split Image, you can tell in Mr. Perkins' performances that he was enigmatic, complicated, and conflicted. Though Perkins died of AIDS in 1992, his silver screenlegacy endures thanks to his lengthy, strange filmography.
Hollywood wanted Perkins to be the next James Dean, but his vulnerability and (frankly) apparent gayness stood at odds with that demand. As I like to say, we can't rewrite cinematic history to include all the wonderful gay characters we deserve, so we as gay entertainment anthropologists have to find our stories in the nuances, innuendos, and otherwise untold stories hidden right onscreen (perhaps unintentionally), right within all the stated heterosexuality. Though...

Though...

Doesn't this photo just make your heart all warm and fuzzy? Exes Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony proved that it's still all about love and respect between the two of them, posing together at Anthony's son's birthday party for a family photo that also included Lopez's beau, Casper Smart, and Anthony's ex-girlfriend, Shannon de Lima. "Happy Birthday Cristian!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #houseparty #Familia," J.Lo tweeted. The group was all smiles as they celebrated Cristian—Anthony's son with ex-wife and former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres—turning 12. Their other son, Ryan, 9, was also in attendance, along with...

Help! us explore the many ways in which John, Paul, George and Ringo have influenced film, then and now
With Magical Mystery Tour getting the bells-and-whistles reissue treatment this week, here's a look back at the multifaceted and often downright bizarre impact the Beatles have made on the moving image.
1) The Beatles as Oscar-winners
Let It Be was filmed in January 1969, but remained unreleased until May 1970, by which point the band had officially announced its split. The Beatles were keen to see the film buried; they had little desire to return to this testing period in their career or to air some of the more fractious moments it contains – most famously the tiff between Paul and George ("I'll play, you know, whatever you want me to play or I won't play at all"). And yet, ultimately, they're probably happy they did. In April 1971 the Beatles picked up their one and only Academy award,...

Here's the note that was left under the windshield of the birthday truck the Brooklyn Nets parked in front of Williams' house:
Dear Deron,
Happy birthday! You're all grown up now... 28! It's a big one, and we got you a truck with nothing in it as a present. We need the truck back, though. Hopefully we can get Dwight Howard or something as a late gift, but we just wanted to stalk you to show you how much we care!
Love,
Jay-z, Mikhail, and Billy
We'll keep you posted on whether or not this strategy works. Hint: It won't.

Taking notes during episodes of Mad Men has become progressively more difficult as Season 5 develops. Last night, the inevitable came to pass, the moment set up by the entire season, but I Still had problems jotting down every bit of minutiae, every set detail, every gratuitous bloody child vagina shot. This led to notes like, “@ the Barber meets Jed, big.” And that’s it. So I apologize for the incoherence of the following Crazy Crazy Suicide Episode Recap!
We open with Don at the barbershop taking some backhanded compliments from a dude named Jed or something. What we don’t realize is that Don doesn’t need to go to the barbershop because his hair cuts itself; he only goes to keep up appearances.
Meanwhile, Lane Pryce modestly and ironically accepts an appointment as the head of the fiscal control committee of the 4A’s (the American Association of Advertising Agencies). See,...

Last Sunday (Earth Day, no less), the Discovery Channel aired the final episode of its Frozen Planet series. Titled "On Thin Ice," the episode captures the staggering changes in our polar regions being wrought by global warming -- shrinking glaciers, rising seas, and disappearing habitats. But there was one thing missing: in 45 minutes, not a word was uttered about why all that Arctic ice is melting. In an impressive feat of journalistic malpractice, Discovery completely avoided the fact that the burning of fossil fuels causes climate change, and thanks to a New York Times article, now we know why. Discovery has admitted to censoring itself because it wanted to avoid criticism from climate change deniers. This was a shameful decision, which is why thousands of people have joined Forecast the Facts in demanding an immediate apology and an explicit commitment from Discovery to make sure it never happens again.
