Lion-Girl was written and directed by Kurando Mitsutake based on characters created by famed manga author and artist Go-Nagai who also created Devilman, Cutie Honey and Mazinger Z among others and produced by Toei Video. If that sounds like a recipe for a whole lot of weirdness, then you’re right.
The film opens in a Tokyo bathhouse with several nude people staring at a young woman named Botan. After, she refuses to be scared by their threats, they begin to transform. They sprout horns and fangs, their faces become brightly coloured kabuki masks as they snarl in anger. A glowing tattoo appears on her back as she turns to face them.

Kurando Mitsutake is not a name that will spring to mind of many an action movie fan, yet he has helmed a number of films that not only push the envelope of action but of exploitation. His most famous movie, until now, was undoubtedly Gun Woman, a crazy tale of a woman turned into an assassin against her will- complete with gun parts sew Inside her body (to evade a pat down obviously). Now Mitsutake gives us his take on that most old-school of action movie themes… revenge!

I've got a crazy fun trailer for you to watch today for a B-movie martial arts action thriller called Karate Kill. Yes, the title is a riff on the classic film Karate Kid, and the poster even features the tagline, "He's No Mr. Miyagi." The "He" that the tagline is referring to is a Karate master named Kenji. He's the main character of the film and this is the synopsis:
When Karate master Kenji’s (Hayate) young sister (Mana Sakura) is kidnapped by a dangerous cult, and taken to the U.S. he will stop at nothing to find her. Partnered with a mysterious shot-gun toting partner, Kenji must use his mastery of Karate to dismantle the cult members one by one in spectacular and bloody fashion, until he finds his sister.
The movie was directed by acclaimed filmmaker Kurando Mitsutake (Gun Woman, Blind Wolf) and it's also described as being Tarantino meets Cannon Films.

The second genre, which used to dominate Hollywwod during the 80s and the 90s is not completely dead nowadays, but definitely placed in the background. However, the low budget, exclusively focused on action aesthetics still have their fans, and Kurando Mitsutake delivers a great specimen, which becomes utterly cult when combined with Japanese splatter notions.
Kenji is a martial artist who works four part time jobs in Japan in order to finance his sister’s studying in La. However, when she stops giving signs of life, Kenji decides to go to the USA to search for Mayumi. As he investigates, he finds out that she has started working as a hostess, until a cult named Capital Messiah, headed by a psychopath named Vandenski, kidnapped her in order to shoot one of the snuff films they offer to their subscribers. Back in 2009, I caught a little movie called Samurai Avenger: The Blind Wolf at a beer-soaked midnight screening at the Asian Film Festival of Dallas. I was tipsy, but I was also blown away by this super fun slice of retro exploitation fun from a director named Kurando Mitsutake. Two years ago I stepped into a screening of a film called Gun Woman at Texas Frightmare Weekend and was absolutely enamored of it's sleazy Cannon Films vibe and a powerhouse performance from the sweetheart of Japanese splatter, Asami. This film was also directed by Kurando Mistutake. So imagine my delight when I got to interview Kurando last year for the dual Blu-ray releases of these films in the Us and he told me that...

Texas Frightmare Weekend, the largest horror convention in the Southwest United States, has announced the first wave of their film screenings for the 2016 event. In addition to the multitude of fantastic guests and vendors Tfw attracts every single year, they've become one of my favorite venues to see new underground horror films. Past Texas premieres have included Kurando Mitsutake's Gun Woman, Astron-6's Father's Day, Nishimura Yoshihiro's Helldriver, and dozens more. This year the first wave includes several eagerly awaited by gorehounds nationwide as well as some lesser known films that are sure to please! Texas Frightmare Weekend 2016 takes place April 29-May 1 at the Hyatt Regency Dfw Hotel in Irving, Texas....

Now available on Blu-ray from Scream Factory is the revenge thriller, Gun Woman, and we've been provided with three copies to give away to Daily Dead readers.
"A brilliant doctor vows revenge on a crazy sadistic killer following the murder of his wife… and devises the perfect assassination plan by turning a young woman into the most lethal assassin the world has ever seen. This outrageous plan will unfold in the killer's heavily fortified underground lair. The lethal assassin will be placed into a temporal state of death and send into the facility as a dead body… but when she wakes, it is everyone else in the compound who will be deprived of their lives.
But there is one catch. What will she use as a weapon? The staff of the underground facility is armed with weapons that have fingerprint authentication systems so it's impossible for her to use their weapons.

Pardon the language, but f**k me… Gun Woman is my kind of movie! Wild, crazy, sexy, bloody and bad-ass are just a small selection of over the top adjectives I’d use to describe this movie, which almost single-handely revives the classic exploitation Cat III “label” that many a movie fan in the 90s knew was a mark of a great Far East flick (when I say great I actually mean exploitative and packed with sex and violence – which is great! Right?).
The film has one hell of a crazy plot. You see there’s a doctor, who’s wife was raped and murdered by the son of a prominent businessman (know only in the movie as ‘Hamazaki’s Son’). Said son likes nothing more than beating the crap out of women – before,...

Asami is back in action. Our favourite low-budget action heroine takes the lead in Kurando Mitsutake's exploitation movie, Gun Woman. Check out the trailer below to see if it's missing anything. We're pretty sure they've got all bases covered. How much more physicality survivalist are men compared to women? History has shown time and time again that when wars erupt for national supremacy or resources, battles on the front are fought by the male sex, not the female one. Men’s tennis asks its contestants to win more sets than the women. Men bodybuilders look so much more imposing than their female counterparts. The list can go on and on and yet for all the qualities men claim to that denote their physical superiority, there is one, albeit one that doesn’t come in service very often, that provides women with the clear-cut advantage. If you know and love the super splatter films of Japan's last decade, you've seen Asami, probably a whole lot of her. This former Av model and actress has transitioned into the bloody body everyone wants to see on screen in films like Robogeisha, The Machine Girl, Erotibot, Dead Sushi, and many more. The southwest's premier horror convention, Texas Frightmare Weekend, has secured Asami's first North American convention appearance this year and to make it even more appealing, they've coupled it with the premiere of her new film, Gun Woman, directed by Kurando Mitsutake. Want some good news this Saturday morning? Asami is back in action. Our favourite low-budget action heroine takes the lead in Kurando Mitsutake's exploitation movie, Gun Woman. Following scene-stealing performances in Dead Sushi, The Machine Girl, Rape Zombie 1, 2 & 3, and Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead, everybody's favourite award-winning Japanese model, actress and former Av Idol will be appearing alongside Kairi Narita and Noriaki Kamata in this epic revenge thriller. Check out the trailer below to see if it's missing anything. We're pretty sure they've got all bases covered. No word on release dates yet, but Asami is kicking up a storm in the U.S. What's not to like? Synopsis: Gun Woman follows a Japanese doctor who vows revenge on a crazy sadistic killer after the man murdered his loving wife. Despite the maximum security that surrounds this billionaire, the doctor finds a perfect assassination plan when he turns...

Okay cult film fans, imagine - if you will - elements of Lone Wolf And Cub and Zatoichi fused with the B-western serial and Yoshihiro Nishimura’s ‘nothing is too extreme’ lo-fi special affects aesthetic. Got that fixed in your mind? Because here it is on your screen in Kurando Mitsutake’s Samurai Avenger: The Blind Wolf. I had the chance to talk briefly with Mitsutake - the writer / director / star of the picture - when the film screened at PiFan and came away rather impressed. Mitsutake splits his time between Japan and La and has neatly combined influences from his two homes in this one, which looks to be good, pulpy - and bloody - fun.
