Halo Infinite is the first open-world game in the series, and its development cycle reflects that. Taking 6 years to develop on 343’s brand-new Slipspace engine, Infinite ended up releasing in 2021, after a year-long delay from its initial planned release.
Going the open-world route was a big point of debate for the return of Master Chief, as well as Infinite‘s unconventional direction as a “spiritual reboot” built on a smaller scale compared to other open-world titles. However, here’s why that might have been the very element that saved the franchise.
Halo Infinite’s Open World Is Much Different To Other Games
No padded-out fetch quests in Halo Infinite‘s map, says Crocker.
Speaking with The Gamer, Halo Infinite associate director Paul Crocker explained that the development team consciously avoided mimicking modern trends or relying on comparisons to other titles:

The latest and sixth installment in the popular Halo series, Halo Infinite, was released on December 8, 2021, for Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Before the release of the game, there were many concerns over its gameplay as the previous game in the series, Halo 5: Guardians, was scrutinized for its story, writing, and ending. Fortunately, Halo Infinite was a success as the game was well-received by fans as well as critics.

The game’s open world was particularly praised by a lot of people but before the release, the open world raised a lot of eyebrows. Obviously, players compared the game to existing open-world games but Halo Infinite associate director Paul Crocker explained that they had to be cagey with their answers.

Despite the son of comic book writer Greg Rucka arrested for participating in destructive riots in New York City last summer, director Ridley Scott continues developing Rucka's Oni Press 'espionage' comic book series "Queen & Country" (2001), inspired by the Brit ITV series "The Sandbaggers":

"Recurring characters also include 'Director of Operations' 'Paul Crocker', 'Deputy Chief of Service' 'Donald Weldon', 'Chief of Service Frances Barclay', 'Mission Control Officer' and 'Main Communications Officer' 'Alexis' and former 'Head of Special Section' 'Tom Wallace'..."

Now that Xbox and 343 Industries have unveiled some gameplay from the upcoming Halo Infinite, the developers behind the Xbox Series X‘s flagship title are opening up a bit more about the game.
The latest update comes from 343 creative director Chris Lee, who has revealed that the Halo ring where the game is set is Installation 07, which is also known as “Zeta Halo” in Halo lore. Installation 07 is actually one of the rings that have yet to appear in the games besides a few brief mentions, although it has appeared in some of the tie-in books. It’s regarded in the books as one of the most mysterious Halo rings of all and has been the subject of much speculation among fans.
Lee revealed the title’s setting in an interview with Games Radar in which he called Halo Infinite “the most ambitious Halo game ever made” and a “love letter” to the franchise.

Halo Infinite‘s first gameplay footage reveals the motivations of the franchise’s new villain. In the trailer, War Chief Escharum, a Brute warrior who has plans for the game’s Halo ring, prepares to battle Master Chief, declaring it his “last fight.”
“Without challenge, I grew weary. Lost. Alone,” says Escharum in the video. “But, here you now stand. This is my last fight, a true test of legends. Our story will outlive us both!”
Escharum may be a brand-new character, the big bad who will usher in the next era of conflicts in the Halo universe on the Xbox Series X, but he’s also a callback to the franchise’s past. With the return to a Halo ring, the traditional weapons, and the Brutes back at the forefront of the conflict with humanity, 343 has made a game deeply rooted in nostalgia for the “classic” Halo experience. Escharum...
