With 2023 Emmy Awards voting to begin in just a days on June 15, Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that “Documentary Now” will be in the limited series categories. It’s a shocking move from the television academy since previous seasons have brought nominations for Best Variety Sketch Series. That specific category has been renamed as Scripted Variety Series, and that is where AMC awards campaigners asked for the show to be placed for the 2023 ballot. That petition was ultimately denied.
The fourth season debuted on October 19, 2022, and finished on November 16 for AMC+. The series pretends to be a long-running documentary series but is actually a mockumentary of famous documentaries from the past. Dame Helen Mirren provides the narration for the program.

“If you want to make a TV drama about opium smokers, sadomasochists and imperial slavery in the 19th century, then write your own,” whines The Daily Mail‘s Peter Hitchens about Steven Knight’s new Great Expectations adaptation, presumably forgetting that in 2017, Knight did exactly that in 8-part Gothic Regency thriller Taboo.
Knight’s previous series starring Tom Hardy, bleeds into his take on Charles Dickens’ class and snobbery novel, which loses the comedy and grimes up the characters with the addition of adult content. Great Expectations returns to Knight’s constant theme of social mobility, moving away from ones roots, and the upper classes being mad, evil bastards, as explored in six series of Peaky Blinders.
Here’s the impressive cast amassed for this six-part drama.

The talent behind FX and BBC series “Great Expectations,” “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ literary masterpiece, has spoken about it ahead of its premiere.
“Great Expectations” is the coming-of-age story of Pip, an orphan who yearns for a greater lot in life, until a twist of fate and the evil machinations of the mysterious and eccentric Miss Havisham shows him a dark world of possibilities. Under the great expectations placed upon him, Pip will have to work out the true cost of this new world and whether it will truly make him the man he wishes to be. A critique of the class system, Dickens’ novel was published in 1861 after first releasing it in a series of weekly chapters beginning in December 1860.

The following post contains spoilers for season 1 of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power."
Prime Video's "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" finished up its first season earlier this year in grand fashion. We saw the forging of the three elven rings of power, the discovery of Sauron (Charlie Vickers) by Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), and the Southlands turning into Mordor with a giant battle, volcanic explosion, and a name change on the map. The fight was epic, and not all characters made it out unscathed. The sparks from the fires blinded Queen Regent Míriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson). Elendil (Lloyd Owen) believes he's lost his son Isildur (Maxim Baldry). For a show with a five-season plan, that's a tremendous start.

Spoilers ahead for season 1 of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power."
Cynthia Addai-Robinson has spent a lot of time in the fantasy realm. She played Naevia in "Spartacus," Amanda Waller in "Arrow," and now Tar-Míriel in Prime Video's "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power," which just completed its first season. Now she's starring in the Prime Video comedy "The People We Hate at the Wedding" along with Kristen Bell ("The Good Place"), Allison Janney ("Mom"), and Ben Platt ("Dear Evan Hansen"). The film tells the story of Eloise (Addai-Robinson), who clashes with her family on the eve of her wedding. It's a big departure in terms of recent projects, and a whole lot of fun.
I got a chance to speak to Addai-Robinson about her role in the film, working with comedy heavy hitters, and how she's been speaking with a British accent for quite a while now.

Earlier this week, "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" co-showrunner Patrick McKay spoke to The Hollywood Reporter, revealing that season 2 of the series is set to adapt a story about Sauron (Charlie Vickers) that comes straight from the Tolkien canon. While the writer-producer stayed mum on the details about which story he and J.D. Payne will be bringing to audiences when the show returns, we have a pretty good guess: the rise of the Black Númenóreans, which coincides with the eventual fall of the great city.
There are plenty of hints throughout this season that "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" is headed toward an adaptation of Akallabêth, the section of "The Silmarillion" that tells the story of Númenór's downfall. [Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power finale.] The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power finale unveiled its ultimate villain. The episode premiered Friday, October 14 on Prime Video, and as the trailer promised, evil did indeed reveal itself. It was so packed with new information, there was no time for appearances from Arondir, Bronwyn, Theo, Prince Durin, and Princess Disa, or even an update on Isildur. While we know he can’t be dead because of the character’s importance in the story’s future, learning what happened to Isildur after the eruption of Mount Doom will have to wait until Season 2. We get short appearances from Elendil (Lloyd Owen) and Queen Regent Míriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson), as well as Pharazôn (Trystan Gravelle) and Eärien (Ema Horvath), but the episode largely took place in two infamous Middle-earth locations. Here, we break down the main events of the...

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” has gifted viewers with epic battles, surprising origin stories, and the cataclysmic eruption of Mount Doom over the course of season one. Episode seven, “The Eye” moved the plot along, but several tantalizing threads are still left dangling. Here are the questions I’m desperately hoping the Amazon series answers in the upcoming season finale.
What really happened to Celeborn?
Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) dropped a huge bombshell when she confessed that her husband Celeborn died. Well, she specifically stated that he left for the war and never returned. It’s a surprising confession considering that Celeborn is very much alive in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy and rules the elven kingdom of Lothlorien with Galadriel. It’s safe to assume that Celeborn will show up eventually, but where is he now?
It’s possible the series is taking aspects of...

Exclusive: Great Expectations has found its Young Pip.
FX and the BBC’s upcoming adaptation from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has cast up-and-comer Tom Sweet in the role. He will star as the main character in the first two episodes mainly opposite Olivia Colman, who is playing Miss Havisham.
Sweet also starred as young Robert Catesby in the first three episodes of BBC One’s Gunpowder, which aired in 2017. Film credits include Where Hands Touch, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms and Enjoy.
Sweet will be replaced from episode three onwards by Black Mirror Bandersnatch star Fionn Whitehead, at which point Pip grows up.

It’s official: Amazon’s The Rings of Power has started filming its next season.
Production got underway on Monday at the new hub at Bray Studios just outside London.
The news follows the first official Nielsen ratings being released Thursday for the Prime Video series, showing The Rings of Power topped the streaming charts for its debut week with 1.3 billion minutes viewed (likely an Amazon series record given that only two hours were released).
The first season of the show was filmed in New Zealand over an epic stretch of 18 months during the pandemic. For season 2, which will consist of eight episodes, Amazon switched the show’s production to the U.K., which is considered more economical and is also where the company is establishing a multi-show hub.
The Rings of Power is approaching its seventh and penultimate episode of its debut season this week.

Is it just me, or is "The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power" becoming more and more like "Game of Thrones"? From Galadriel's (Morfydd Clark) epic sword training session, to the split-location narratives unfolding at different speeds, to the rising political tensions across Middle-earth, "The Rings of Power" quickly traded the idyllic and enchanting (if also ominous) tone of its first few episodes for something more familiar. This week's episode, "Partings," made the comparison more apparent than ever with a conversation that shed light on some dark political motivations.
About mid-way through the episode, a series-original character named Kemen (Leon Wadham) decides to speak up when he sees his dad, Pharazôn (Trystan Gravelle), supporting his cousin Queen Regent Míriel's (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) call to arms. "It's not too late to stop this," Kemen says, apparently mistakenly thinking Pharazôn just doesn't realize how influential he is. "Your cousin may hold the scepter,...

Five episodes into "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power," we're now officially more than halfway through the deliberately-paced season and many viewers still find themselves struggling with the idea of what an adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien should "feel" like. Nobody can ever really define what such a subjective statement actually means, of course, especially since material as well-known as this comes with such a broad range of appeal among so many different demographics. But I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the opening of episode 5, titled "Partings," immediately sets the tone for a far more coherent hour than last week's scattershot episode and lives up to much of what fans would consider quintessential Tolkien.
After a quiet but foreboding conversation between Nori (Markella Kavenagh) and the Stranger (Daniel Weyman), where the almost childlike amnesiac expresses doubt over whether he's actually good or not (Rip those poor fireflies!

Ensemble shows like "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" tend to come with a built-in disadvantage compared to smaller stories with less sprawling casts. With so many characters and only so much narrative real estate to go around, J.R.R. Tolkien adaptations have always had their work cut out for them.
Director Peter Jackson navigated around this potential obstacle thanks to the very structure of "The Fellowship of the Ring" -- first we meet Gandalf and our primary hobbit protagonists, then Aragorn, and then the rest of the Fellowship organically (and various other supporting characters) after it's no longer so overwhelming. For a better comparison within the same medium, "Game of Thrones" began by throwing nearly every major character into one location and then followed their progressively disparate journeys into every corner of Westeros. In both cases, the respective stories established strong foundations upon which viewers could easily...

If you've watched one Middle-earth tale, then you've watched them all, right? By now, you'd have to be actively avoiding the fantasy genre as a whole if you wanted to stay blissfully unaware of the rules of engagement here. When adapting the writing of J.R.R. Tolkien, you can expect lots of walking, lots of lore and backstory, and a whole lot of talk about good vs unambiguous evil. And in the two-episode premiere of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power," that's exactly what we got. As /Film's Chris Evangelista put it succinctly in his review of the first pair of episodes:
'"The Rings of Power' can't escape the shadow of Peter Jackson's 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy. In fact, I'm not even sure the show wants to distance itself ... And to be fair, if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
It can be particularly tricky...

The excitement leading into The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power was off the charts.
The highly-anticipated series, which is reportedly the most expensive TV show in history, got off the ground running with 25 million viewers in its first day.
Deadline reported the news, revealing that those numbers make it the best and biggest premiere in Prime Video's 15-year history.
“It is somehow fitting that Tolkien’s stories – among the most popular of all time, and what many consider to be the true origin of the fantasy genre – have led us to this proud moment,” said Amazon Studios boss Jennifer Salke today.
“I am so grateful to the Tolkien Estate – and to our showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, executive producer Lindsey Weber, cast and crew – for their tireless collaborative efforts and boundless creative energy."

The magic of the elves bestows gifts upon you, mortal. Prime Video has released the first two episodes of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power," earlier than expected. Though the release date is listed as Friday, September 2, 2022 (the anniversary of the passing of author J.R.R. Tolkien), Prime Video often drops their newest offerings a little early. We lucky fans are getting a bit of a speed boost in our journey to Middle-earth.
The series is set in the Second Age, thousands of years before the events of "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" trilogies, though we'll see some familiar characters like Galadriel and Elrond. This is so long ago that the Hobbits as we know them aren't in existence yet. Instead, we'll see their predecessors, the proto-Hobbits.
