Mary Jane, the Amy Herzog play starring Rachel McAdams in her Broadway debut, has been given a two-week extension by producer Manhattan Theatre Club.
The play, which opened to excellent reviews Tuesday, will now run through Sunday, June 16, at Mtc’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre.
Directed by Anne Kauffman, Mary Jane stars McAdams as the mother of a critically ill young boy. Relying on sheer optimism and humor, the single mom of the title faces each day through inner strength, love and a makeshift family of caretakers, nurses and other mothers facing tragedy.
In addition to McAdams, Mary Jane features April Matthis (The Piano Lesson), Susan Pourfar (Tribes), Lily Santiago (La Brea), and Brenda Wehle (The Gilded Age).

In many ways, the role of Mary Jane, the single mother at the center of Amy Herzog’s compassionate play Mary Jane, was made for Rachel McAdams.
The actress’ most notable characters include an acid-tongued high-school student (Mean Girls), a lovesick Southern belle (The Notebook) and a tireless investigative reporter (Spotlight), but last year she delivered a quietly moving performance in Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, which marked a new turn in her understated style.
In Kelly Fremon Craig’s adaptation of Judy Blume’s novel, McAdams breathed new life into Margaret’s mother Barbara, a woman estranged from her conservative family after marrying a Jewish man (Benny Safdie). The actress’ best scenes are the hushed ones, moments in which her character, enveloped by the quiet of an empty house, releases the tension in her shoulders and indulges in her anxieties and uncertainties. Not only must Barbara...

This is Day 113 of the WGA strike and Day 40 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
National Union Solidarity Day kicked off on Tuesday in New York City with several hundred marchers forming a picket line that stretched two full blocks outside the Manhattan corporate offices of Amazon and HBO. Striking writers and actors saw their ranks bolstered on Tuesday by unionized teachers, nurses, truckers, musicians, retail and hotel workers, and they got vocal encouragement from union chiefs who promised to have their backs.
In what might be a sign of how long the WGA strike seems to have lasted, New York State Senator Jessica Ramos began her remarks with a reference to “the past 100 years” before checking herself to say “100 days,” a correction that drew laughs. “It felt like 100 years,” she clarified before moving on.
No better sound to start the morning than a union chorus: chants, cowbells, and Teamsters horns!

Spoilert Alert: This story contains details from the Season 3 finale of NBC’s Manifest.
Tonight, NBC’s Manifest came to the end of its third season, going out with a bang, as an original cast member met her end.
When two-part finale “Mayday” kicks off, one-time NYPD detective Michaela Stone (Melissa Roxburgh) is experiencing her “most powerful” calling ever. In it, she finds herself back on Flight 828, and sees that the Montego airliner is oozing with blood. She intuits, from this calling, that an 828er is going to get hurt, and sets out to stop that from happening.
Around the same time, Ben (Josh Dallas) and Grace Stone’s (Athena Karkanis) son Cal sneaks out of the house and heads to Project Eureka headquarters, in hopes of getting the Nsa to stop experimenting on the 828 tailfin. “It can’t be here anymore,” the boy says. “Otherwise, something bad will happen.

Miley Cyrus was one of the first celebrities to adapt to the new Covid-19 world order. Not long after stay-at-home rules were implemented, the singer-actor launched “Bright Minded,” a talk show on Instagram Live with a guest list that has included Elton John, Demi Lovato, Kerry Washington and Selena Gomez. “I loved how there was really no pressure. It was like, if the show went over, if the show had some tech problems, it was just about doing it for the love of it,” she says on Tuesday’s episode of the Variety and iHeart podcast “The Big Ticket.”
Asked if she’s developing “Bright Minded” as a television talk show, Cyrus teases, “We’ll see.”
Before the pandemic, the former “Hannah Montana” star dipped back into acting with a starring role in an episode of the Netflix anthology series “Black Mirror.” She plays Ashley O, a seemingly happy pop...

“Black Mirror’s” Emmy journey this season has had more twists than a “Black Mirror” episode. After getting permission to stay in the Best TV Movie category, despite its submission “Smithereens” being five minutes short of the new 75-minute requirement, the show was shunted to drama last week. That means instead of the limited/TV movie acting races, “Black Mirror’s” Season 5 stars can now choose to enter in drama lead, supporting or guest. And if any of them or Netflix are torn, take it from us: Go guest.
Current Emmy rules stipulate that performers who appear in less than 50 percent of a show’s season are eligible to compete in guest, but are not required to, so they can pick whatever category they want. But to put it bluntly, guest is arguably where all “Black Mirror” actors belong. The show is an anthology series with a different cast every episode.

Despite Netflix‘s “Black Mirror” dominating the Emmy Awards in recent years with eight overall wins including three for Best TV Movie, the anthology series has never been nominated for a single Golden Globe. Talk about spooky! That could all change this year thanks to the Season 5 entry titled “Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too” — aka the Miley Cyrus episode (watch the trailer below).

That only puts her behind these five leading ladies on Gold Derby’s predictions chart: Michelle Williams (“Fosse/Verdon”) at 10/3 odds, Helen Mirren (“Catherine the Great”) at 39/10 odds, Toni Collette (“Unbelievable”) at 9/2 odds, Joey King (“The Act”) at 6/1 odds and Merritt Wever (“Unbelievable”) at 8/1 odds. Miley Cyrus has given us a lot to chew on over the years, giving us her punchy Hannah Montana bops, wacky Dead Petz experiments, flower-powered Younger Now tunes, and recently, trippy collaborations with Mark Ronson. Her latest project seemingly bridges all of those things together as she plays a hyperrealistic version of herself on season five of Charlie Brooker's twisty Black Mirror series in "Rachel, Jack, and Ashley Too."
The episode covers a lot of ground when it comes to Black Mirror concepts, exploring how technology impacts celebrity culture, self-perception, grief, and even pest control. Still, it's funny, thoughtful, and features developed female characters without being too preachy. If you're still digesting the episode and want to get a clearer picture of it, here is a deep dive into Black Mirror's most musical venture yet.

In “Mary Page Marlowe,” Tracy Letts, the Tony-winning actor (“Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”) and Pulitzer and Tony-winning playwright (“August: Osage County”), takes his cue from a sage passage from the writings of Joan Didion: “I think we are well-advised to keep on nodding terms with the people we used to be. Otherwise, they turn up unannounced and surprise us.”
Mary Page, who is played by six different actresses (including Blair Brown and the freshly Emmy-nominated Tatiana Maslany) at ten stages of her life in this poetic mood piece, is the kind of character who grows, and grows, and grows on you. When first met, she’s 40 years old, separating from her husband, and preparing to relocate from Dayton, Ohio, to Lexington, Kentucky, a move that unsettles her two children. As played by Susan Pourfar, she’s almost comically stressed out, trying to juggle the complicated work and...

It begins with the abduction of a girl. The scene is quiet and innocuous until it isn’t—a car rolling up to a young girl to ask for directions as children play in the background. The driver says, “Are you Anna?” before a man grabs her and shoves her in the car the instant she says, “Yes.” We watch as though a voyeur behind the trees, helpless to do anything but wait to see what happens while a boy on his bike (Dante Hoagland‘s Howie) rides into frame for the camera to follow home. These suburbs are small so his destination just happens to be next door to the house we’re about to spend the night within. That family’s new babysitter is also named Anna and suddenly we realize what’s gone wrong.

Last night's Scandal was titled Blown Away -- an apt description for several reasons. Not only did we learn who actually shot President Grant (and how!), but we watched Huck, who is usually 10 steps ahead, playing catch-up at the most inopportune moment imaginable. That led to him getting arrested for the crime, which was actually committed by ... his girlfriend, Becky Flynn!
Yes, it turns out the woman who forced Huck's heart open had been setting him up as a patsy all along. Or had she? For her role in “Tribes,” Susan Pourfar had to learn more than just her lines.Pourfar plays Sylvia, a young woman losing her hearing, and for the part, she needed to speak with a British accent, plus learn American Sign Language and the piano. Setting the play in motion is Sylvia’s meeting with Billy (Russell Harvard), who grew up in a hearing family and never learned to sign until Sylvia teaches him. However, unlike Sylvia, Pourfar didn’t know any sign language before landing this role, aside from one song she learned in the fifth grade. Candace Broecker-Penn was her Asl teacher, as well as the interpreter for Harvard, who is deaf. Pourfar learned by repetition—going over the lines with Broecker-Penn again and again. Now Pourfar says she knows enough Asl to look credible in the show, but is by no means fluent. When Harvard is signing with friends,...
