New Delhi, Aug 24 (Ians) Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian to be in space and Sunita Williams, an Indo-American NASA astronaut have lauded the Chandrayaan-3 mission, which helped the country become the first nation in the world to land near the South Pole of the Moon.
Led by scientists at Isro, the Vikram lander, aboard Chandrayaan-3, landed near the South Pole of the Moon on Wednesday after travelling about 3.84 lakh km for over 40 days.
India also became the fourth nation to make a soft landing on the Moon after the erstwhile Ussr, the US, China.
“I am not surprised, because I knew deep inside that Isro will make it this time. I am already a proud Indian and I have become a prouder Indian now. I knew that Isro will iron out all the challenges faced by Chandrayaan-2 and will make this mission a success,” said Sharma, during a live telecast...

Chennai, June 23 (Ians) After Russia in 1984, it is now the US to fly Indian astronauts to space.
But this time the US will fly Indian astronauts to the International Space Station next year — much ahead of India’s own human space mission — Gaganyaan.
According to the joint statement issued by the US White House, the US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi set a course to reach new frontiers across all sectors of space cooperation.
The leaders applauded our growing cooperation on earth and space science, and space technologies.
“They welcomed the decision of NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and Isro (Indian Space Research Organisation) to develop a strategic framework for human spaceflight cooperation by the end of 2023,” the statement said.
“The leaders hailed the announcement by NASA to provide advanced training to Indian astronauts at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, with a goal of...

All That Breathes. When Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh decided to mount an Oscar campaign in October 2021 for their film Writing with Fire, they were attempting a historic first. Until then, no Indian documentary feature had ever been on the radar for the Academy Awards. The general assumption has always been that India had only one category to gun for: Best International Feature Film. Every year since 1957, the Film Federation of India (Ffi), an apex body comprising Indian film producers, exhibitors, distributors, and studio owners, has appointed a committee to select the country’s official submission from the year’s releases. These selections have often proved to be arbitrary decisions, rarely standing a chance at even making the shortlist, primarily due to a vague selection process that lacks credibility. In the last six decades, only three Indian submissions—Mother India (1957), Salaam Bombay (1988), and Lagaan (2001)—actually ended up with a nomination.

"The US has proposed to train an Indian astronaut. It is part of the future engagement and not for Gaganyaan. No plan has been finalised on training of the Indian astronaut by the US," the Isro official told Ians.
Refuting a news report that states the Gaganyaan astronauts to be trained by the US, the official said the US proposal is only in a discussion stage.
Four Indian Air Force (Iaf) pilots have undergone astronaut training in Russia for the Gaganyaan mission.
India plans to send two/three astronauts to space under its first human space mission.
In 1984, an Iaf pilot Rakesh Sharma became the first Indian to fly into space on a Soviet Union’s Soyuz T-11 spacecraft.
The only Indian citizen to have been in outer space is Rakesh Sharma, a former Air Force pilot who flew on a Soviet Soyuz mission in 1984.

Here is the real reason why Aamir Khan has decided to opt out of astronaut Rakesh Sharma’s bio-pic. It’s not the script or the budget for this film to be produced by Sidharth Roy Kapur that’s the problem.
Instead according to sources in the know, Aamir has decided to stay out of all outside projects to concentrate on working on a franchise that his production house has been developing. In fact, Yrf’s Thugs Of Hindostan will be Aamir’s last outside film. For the next 10 years Aamir will devote his attention to a franchise product produced by and starring Aamir and some of them also directed by him.

NEW YORK -- The New York Mayor's Office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting announced its redrafted production permit and insurance rule proposal, four months after an outcry of protest over their original proposal led them back to the drawing board.
The new proposed permit would be required for a shoot if TV or film equipment or vehicles create an obstruction, but not for productions that only use hand-held cameras or tripods that don't cause an obstruction.
The new proposal, set to be published in the City Record on Tuesday, will only apply to those with handheld or tripod cameras or equipment who film in the street or take up a substantial part of the sidewalk.
"We're actually quite pleased on a number of levels," said New York Civil Liberties Union executive director Donna Lieberman, whose organization filed a lawsuit on behalf of filmmaker Rakesh Sharma, which led to a settlement forcing the city to establish explicit guidelines.

NEW YORK -- After months of protest, the New York Civil Liberties Union and filmmakers have convinced the Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting to revise proposed rules requiring the use of a permit for people filming or taking photographs for just a few minutes.
The city will essentially start over, redrafting a permit proposal it quietly introduced on the film office's Web site on May 25 in response to a settled lawsuit brought by the NYCLU. The initial rules included provisions requiring permits for as few as two people filming with a handheld camera for a half-hour, or more than five people filming with a tripod for as little as 10 minutes.
The April settlement of the lawsuit, filed on behalf of documentary filmmaker Rakesh Sharma after he was detained by police for handheld video camera filming, required the city to create rules defining when people need permits for the first time in history.

New York will create first-time, written rules for the issuing of film permits under terms of a settlement in a federal case brought by the New York Civil Liberties Union, officials said Wednesday.
The NYCLU said the city on Friday will publish the newly formulated rules and will drop a requirement that filmmakers and photographers show proof of $1 million insurance coverage.
The settlement follows the NYCLU suit filed in January 2006 in U.S. District Court in New York on behalf of Indian documentarian Rakesh Sharma, who was detained in May 2005 for filming a city sidewalk scene with a hand-held video camera. The suit charged that Sharma was told he lacked a necessary permit and then was denied one when he applied.
"Over the last several years, we have received numerous complaints about the mistreatment of filmmakers and photographers," NYCLU associate legal director Christopher Dunn said. "The adoption of these new rules is an important reform, but we will continue to protect the rights of photographers."
The NYCLU said Sharma was paid unspecified damages as part of the settlement.
