Tracy Morgan can check the Kentucky Derby off of his bucket list.
The 48-year-old comedian has made it to the Bluegrass State, where “the most exciting two minutes in sports” kicks off Saturday from the famed Churchill Downs in Lousiville.
It’s a dream come true for Morgan, who said at the 29th annual Barnstable Brown Derby Eve Gala on Friday night that he wanted to see a Derby in his lifetime.
“The horses — they’re great athletes. I wanted to see one before I die,” he said — dedicating his trip to his late father.

[[tmz:video id="0_ap91e0xq"]] Mary Wilson -- one of the original Supremes -- had an interesting take on police brutality in the African American community -- there was less of it when "we as black people knew our place." Mary was by no means singing the virtues of the pre-Martin Luther King days, but she put in context the fact that there was less violence simply because the African American community wasn't standing up for its right to equality and full citizenship.

Washington — A Capitol ceremony honoring Rep. John Dingell for becoming Congress's longest-serving member in history featured the expected, such as praise and jokes from Vice President Joe Biden and House Speaker John Boehner. It included the unexpected – a pointed pitch to a roomful of congressional leaders and lawmakers by Cardinal Theodore McCarrick for controversial immigration legislation.
Yet it was hard to top a performance by singer Mary Wilson backed up by a vaguely synchronized chorus line that included House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and the actress Lynda Carter.
Wilson, an original member of The Supremes, a marque 1960s group of Detroit-based Motown Records, sang a brief set of songs climaxed with their upbeat hit "Stop in the Name of Love." Pelosi, Sebelius and Carter – along with Dingell's wife, Deborah, and Rep. Donna Edwards, D-Calif. – formed an unlikely dance line behind her, singing and...

Southfield, Mich. — Bobby Rogers, a founding member of Motown group The Miracles and a songwriting collaborator with Smokey Robinson, died Sunday at his suburban Detroit home. He was 73.
Motown Museum board member Allen Rawls said Rogers died about 6 a.m. in Southfield. Rogers had been ill for several years.
Rogers formed the group in 1956 with cousin Claudette Rogers, Pete Moore, Ronnie White and Robinson. Their hits included "Shop Around," `'You've Really Got a Hold on Me," `'The Tracks of My Tears," `'Going to a Go-Go," `'I Second That Emotion" and "The Tears of a Clown."
"Another soldier in my life has fallen. Bobby Rogers was my brother and a really good friend," Robinson said Sunday in a statement. "He and I were born on the exact same day in the same hospital in Detroit. I am really going to miss him. I loved him very much."

Whenever I study the covers of classic soul records from the 1960s and '70s, I can't help but marvel at how sophisticated female singers like Gladys Knight, Mary Wells, Tammi Terrell and Diana Ross dressed. As my grandmother would say, "They were sharp!"
To round out their amazing vocal talents, these Motown artists were outfitted in extravagant gowns carrying thousand dollar price tags by Hollywood designers Bob Mackie, Michael Travis and Pat Campano -- an expense that surely didn't come easy, even for a successful black record company.
Yet, I'm sure I'm not the only one who secretly wishes that the ladies who currently rule the Billboard charts would take a cue from musical acts of yesteryear by revealing less and showing more of their vocal range (that is, if they have it). Surprisingly, Mary Wilson, one of the founding members of The Supremes, understands this desire to flash some major skin.

Norby Walters is not necessarily someone I would want to be friends with. For starters, he’s a sports agent. Despite my raging “Plantar fasciitis,” I am no athlete. Back in 1988, Norby was convicted of fraud and racketeering after he signed college players to professional sports teams before it was legally allowed. Despite my penchant for Scorcese crime flicks and a dude I once made out with who just got out of Rikers, I don’t often associate with criminals. He also kind of looks like my cousin Edith who passed away years ago. I loved Edith but there’s only room for one in my heart. And yet, taking allll of these things into consideration, my mind is made up: I want to be friends with Norby Walters. Why, you ask? Simple. Judging by the characters who attended his 22nd Annual Night Of 100 Stars Oscar Viewing Party, he...

During Summer 2011 -- winding down at last! -- we've been asking Tfe readers to choose the most memorable Best Actress nominated film characters. Which film characters have you taken into your hearts and headspace most fully? Who is always popping into mind unbidden? Below are the latest voting results for August's polls covering the 1960s & 1970s (previous results: 1980s and 1991-2010). We used five year intervals for voting and asked readers to choose the 5 most memorable characters from each group of 25 Oscar nominees.
If you're looking for these polls to provide a "face" of an era it looks like Julie Andrews wins the early 60s -- she was thoroughly modern back then! -- and Faye Dunaway takes over from there for a long run at the top (1966-1980) [* indicates that it was an Oscar winning role.]

AMC's Supremes-like trifecta of hit shows (where Mad Men is Diana Ross, Walking Dead is Mary Wilson, and Breaking Bad is poor Florence Ballard, of course) has been under pressure lately, what with Frank Darabont's departure from Walking Dead and the uncertainty over Breaking Bad's future. Enter Kurt Sutter, the vaguely Geddy Lee-looking creator of FX's Sons of Anarchy. Sutter recently went on something of a tear via Twitter, airing quite a bit of AMC's dirty laundry, at least from his own perspective. "why darabont got fired - wiener. he held AMC hostage, broke their bank, budgets were slashed, shit rolled down hill onto gilligan and frank," went the first tweet, referring to Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner, Breaking Bad's Vince Gilligan, and Walking Dead's Darabont, respectively. "darabont reacted strongly to slashed budgets. he made mistakes, he was fired. [...]...

Jennifer Hudson, Beyoncé Knowles, Anika Noni Rose, Dreamgirls Christopher Nolan – Inception: Biggest Oscar Snubs #3b In early 2007, Bill Condon's Dreamgirls suffered an Oscar fate similar to that of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight two years later. A musical based on the Broadway show inspired by the lives and loves of The Supremes' members Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, and Florence Ballard (later replaced by Cindy Birdsong), Dreamgirls, much like The Dark Knight, received nominations from the Producers Guild and the Directors Guild. Additionally, the film's cast — Beyoncé Knowles, Jennifer Hudson, Anika Noni Rose, Eddie Murphy, and Jamie Foxx, among others — was shortlisted in the Screen Actors Guild's Best Cast category. Also like The Dark Knight, Dreamgirls went on to garner a total of 8 Oscar nominations. Not one of those was in the Best Picture, Best Director, or Best Screenwriting categories. Now, some found the Dreamgirls omissions well-deserved. Many...

HollywoodNews.com: Mary Wilson reports that the album of all-new material she’s been working on– with songs by Brian and Eddie Holland and Lamont Dozier — will be out “within a couple of months.
“We haven’t decided on a name yet. It has something to do with my journey in life. It has a lot to say about life,” says the songstress who rose to fame as one of Motown’s legendary Supremes – who, of course, were hit-making giants thanks to songs turned out by Holland-Dozier-Holland.
Mary’s new album is “more adult contemporary,” she says. “It was originally supposed to come out this month, but it isn’t quite there yet. Of course, there’s no radio to play new music these days. There’s the internet and, well, we’ll figure out something.”

hollywoodnews.com: A great New York night: the Friars Club took over the Waldorf Astoria main ballroom and toasted Motown’s Smokey Robinson and Steiner Studios founder David Steiner.
Steiner probably drew the big donor crowd, which was fine. He’s a lovely guy. But it was Smokey who brought the music. For his biography of Florence Ballard, former Detroit Free Press reporter Peter Benjaminson went back to the lengthy transcripts of the interviews he conducted with her himself, before her death in 1976 at age 32. Ballard—who was memorably ousted from The Supremes for challenging Diana Ross, for having a less radio-friendly voice, or for being an alcoholic, depending on who's relating the story—is back in the spotlight after 2006's movie musical Dreamgirls, making Benjaminson's The Lost Supreme: The Life Of Dreamgirl Florence Ballard somewhat timely. But he turns his first-rate primary source into a second-rate defense of Ballard, with his voice coming in louder than hers. Though Ballard, Diana Ross, and Mary Wilson began on equal footing in The Primettes (later The Supremes), the group's first number-one hit, "Where Did Our Love Go," pushed lead vocalist Ross into the foreground, if she wasn't already pushing herself. Ballard tried to...
